Shared shuttles suit solo visitors and couples who want a straightforward transfer. Public buses keep costs down, while a private vehicle becomes more competitive when several people share the bill. Renting makes most sense if you also want a car around Arenal and for the next leg of your trip.
San José to La Fortuna: Which Transport Should You Choose?
Allow roughly three to four hours for a road transfer under ordinary conditions. Public buses and shared pickups can take longer, and traffic, mountain weather and your hotel's location affect the final arrival time.

The MyPinkBus and Private Travel CR prices were checked on 27 September 2026; these are named service examples, not market-wide rates. Road estimates start from departure or pickup and exclude immigration, baggage collection and rental paperwork.
Compare complete journeys. A cheaper ticket loses some of its advantage if reaching its departure point requires a long taxi ride, while an airport pickup may save an unnecessary trip into the city.
Starting at SJO Airport or in San José City
Juan Santamaría International Airport is near Alajuela, outside central San José. A booking described simply as “San José to La Fortuna” may therefore start at a city hotel, an airport meeting point or another designated stop.
If you are landing at SJO, look for an airport pickup before arranging transport downtown. MyPinkBus, for example, collects airport passengers after completing its San José city pickups. Its advertised city departure time is not the airport boarding time.
Flight arrival is also different from being ready to leave the airport. Give the shuttle company your flight number and scheduled landing time so it can assess whether its pickup is realistic. Private transfers offer more flexibility, but the booking should still explain how delays and waiting time are handled.

Taking the Public Bus to La Fortuna
The public bus is the economical choice if you can work around its departure and manage your own luggage. The main distinction is between the direct morning service and a two-bus journey through Ciudad Quesada, also commonly called San Carlos.
Direct bus from San José
Use Terminal Atlántico Norte, rather than following older directions to Terminal 7-10. The La Fortuna service arrives at the town's bus terminal, not at every hotel in the surrounding Arenal area.
Public timetable listings disagree on the precise morning departure. Use the date-specific search on MiBus or the terminal ticket office to establish the time before arranging your journey to the station. Do not plan around an old screenshot of a timetable.

Connecting through Ciudad Quesada
The alternative is to take a San José–Ciudad Quesada bus and continue to La Fortuna on a second service. This gives you more departure flexibility, but adds waiting time and another luggage transfer.
Ask about the connection before leaving San José, particularly later in the day. Reaching Ciudad Quesada does not by itself establish that another bus will still get you to La Fortuna that evening.
Airport arrivals should also distinguish buses leaving central San José from services using the Alajuela area. Do not assume the city bus boards at the international arrivals curb; establish the actual boarding point before taking a taxi anywhere.
Keep passports, money and electronics with you, and retain any luggage receipt. If someone outside the ticket office claims your bus has already left and offers an expensive replacement ride, verify that claim with the counter. Shared Shuttles: A Practical Middle Ground
Shared shuttles remove the bus connection and much of the terminal navigation, while keeping the cost below a private vehicle for or two people. Their main limitation is the fixed departure: they cannot be treated like taxis that leave whenever your flight arrives.
MyPinkBus's San José–La Fortuna service costs US$55 per passenger, with all fees included, and has a stated duration of four hours. Its published schedule has an 8 a.m. city departure Sunday through Friday and no Saturday service. Airport pickup happens later in the collection round.
Its service uses a list of designated pickup and drop-off points. Luggage and surfboards are included, but you still need to select an available boarding point and arrange the final journey if your accommodation is elsewhere.
Interbus also offers the route with hotel-based service and morning and afternoon departure windows. The useful comparison is therefore not just the fare: it is whether your exact hotel is included, how far you must travel to board and when you will reach your accommodation.
Families should provide children's ages when booking. MyPinkBus requires the parent or guardian to supply a car seat for a child under four; other operators' arrangements may differ.
Private Transfers: Compare the Whole Vehicle Price
Private transport is worth pricing when your party fills several seats or your flight does not fit a shared departure. You arrange the pickup for your group and travel to the agreed accommodation without collecting unrelated passengers.
One published airport example is Private Travel CR's US$220 vehicle for to five passengers. Its service includes child seats on request. This airport rate should not be assumed to cover a different downtown pickup or an added sightseeing itinerary.
At those example prices, four US$55 shuttle seats total US$220. That arithmetic makes a private quote worth checking for four people; it does not establish that every private service will cost the same. Compare the exact dates, passenger and luggage capacity, collection point and final hotel.
Before paying, settle three details: the total including applicable charges, the flight-delay policy, and whether your hotel lies within the quoted drop-off area. Longer sightseeing stops should be agreed separately from a normal restroom break.
Anyone traveling with a wheelchair or another mobility aid should describe its dimensions and boarding needs before booking. A van with spare passenger seats may still lack the access or storage space required.
Driving from San José to La Fortuna
The usual direct drive follows Route 1 toward San Ramón and continues toward La Fortuna on Route 702. Navigation may suggest a variation depending on traffic and the location of your hotel. Enter the accommodation itself as the destination, rather than “Arenal.”
Allow about three to four hours and add time for collecting the car, meals or sightseeing. Mountain sections can be winding and foggy, so a short distance on the map does not translate into highway-speed driving throughout.
The standard route does not automatically require a 4×4. Your accommodation's access road and any detours can change the vehicle requirement. Check those before selecting the cheapest small car, especially if your lodge is away from the main road.

Renting solely for this transfer deserves a separate calculation. Include the full rental and insurance cost, fuel and any charge for returning the vehicle in La Fortuna. Keeping a car can make more sense when it also serves your accommodation, activities and journey.
Flying from San José to La Fortuna
SANSA operates direct flights to La Fortuna, with approximately 30 minutes in the air. Flight frequency varies by season, and the useful departure is the that fits your actual arrival and transfer.
Compare the whole journey with a road transfer: getting to the domestic terminal, check-in, waiting, the flight and transport from Fortuna Airport to your hotel. A long connection can consume much of the time saved in the air.
Baggage allowances depend on the fare purchased. Check the weight, size and number of bags before paying, and arrange sports equipment or oversized items in advance. SANSA also asks passengers with mobility devices to provide their specifications because some larger wheelchairs cannot fit its aircraft compartments.
Flying is most attractive when the timings align and your luggage fits the fare. Price both the airfare and the final hotel transfer before comparing it with a door-to-door vehicle.
Arrival in La Fortuna: Finish the Journey to Your Hotel
La Fortuna town, the Arenal hotel area and the national park are different destinations. A bus ticket to town or a shuttle reservation to a named stop may leave another journey before you reach reception.
Send your accommodation's full name and map pin when arranging transport. A central stay can simplify a car-free arrival, while a lodge farther out may make included hotel delivery more valuable. Consider that transport consequence when choosing where to stay in Costa Rica.
