View All DestinationsPut Newark high on your list for a hotel near New York Penn Station or a stay in New Jersey. JFK works well when its flights and rail connections through Jamaica suit your hotel, including routes to Midtown, Downtown Brooklyn and Long Island.
The flight still comes first. Adding a connection just to reach your preferred airport can cost more time than you save on the journey into town. Compare the airports your route actually offers, then price the trip to your hotel.
“Manhattan” is too broad a destination for a useful airport comparison. Hotels beside Penn Station, near Grand Central and in Harlem can point you toward different transfers.
| Airport | Where it earns a place on your shortlist | Main public transport connection | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| JFK — John F. Kennedy International | Flights that suit your itinerary; hotels reached conveniently through Jamaica or Howard Beach | AirTrain, then LIRR or subway | Separate airport and city transport fares, plus a transfer |
| EWR — Newark Liberty International | Penn Station area, New Jersey stays and a convenient direct flight | AirTrain, then NJ Transit to New York Penn Station | Terminal access adds another leg; construction can change the route |
| LGA — LaGuardia | A suitable nonstop, an inexpensive subway connection, or an uptown stay served by the M60 | Free Q70 bus to subway/LIRR connections, or M60 bus | The airport connection involves a bus journey |
Put your hotel’s nearest station into the comparison before deciding that one airport is closer. JFK’s LIRR connection to Grand Central may suit an east Midtown address, while Newark’s trains arrive on Manhattan’s west side at Penn Station. The final walk or subway ride matters, especially with luggage.
Check the USA entry requirements before committing to an international itinerary.

JFK gives you two main ways to join the city’s rail network: Jamaica and Howard Beach. The AirTrain takes you from the airport to either connection; you then continue by subway or, at Jamaica, by Long Island Rail Road.
Jamaica is the useful starting point for an LIRR trip to Penn Station or Grand Central Madison. Downtown Brooklyn has an LIRR connection through Atlantic Terminal, while onward Long Island journeys depend on the destination and train. Match the service to the station you need.
Brooklyn deserves a closer look than a single airport recommendation. Staying near Atlantic Terminal creates a different journey from booking a hotel elsewhere in the borough. Compare the LIRR route with the subway connection to your neighborhood.
The JFK public transport fares checked on 5 November 2026 were $11.75 for AirTrain plus subway, or $14 off-peak and $16 peak for AirTrain plus LIRR to Penn Station, Grand Central or Atlantic Terminal. These totals include the $8.75 AirTrain fare.
JFK therefore deserves serious consideration even if another airport looks nearer on a map. If your hotel is convenient to an LIRR destination, the train route can be straightforward without depending on a road transfer. Include the walk from the terminal, the AirTrain connection and your final journey from the station in your timing.

Newark is a practical New York arrival airport, particularly when your hotel is near New York Penn Station. It also belongs near the top of the comparison for a New Jersey stay, where the useful station or road route may be different.
The normal rail journey involves AirTrain between the airport and Newark Liberty International Airport Rail Station, followed by NJ Transit into Manhattan. The NJ Transit rail leg to New York Penn takes approximately 30 minutes. Terminal access, waiting and the journey onward to your hotel add to that.
Three similar station names can cause an expensive wrong turn:
| Station name | What it means for your trip |
|---|---|
| Newark Liberty International Airport Rail Station | The airport’s connection between AirTrain and mainline trains |
| Newark Penn Station | A station in New Jersey, with onward connections including PATH |
| New York Penn Station | The Manhattan destination for an NJ Transit trip into Midtown |
Buy the NJ Transit ticket for the airport and your actual destination. Your airport rail ticket includes the AirTrain fee, so you should not add a second AirTrain charge when comparing the cost. Use the current fare shown for that journey in NJ Transit’s ticketing system.
Terminal A adds a detail that matters with bags: the existing AirTrain station is connected to the terminal by about a 15-minute walk or a five-minute shuttle ride. Allow for the shuttle wait as well as the ride.
Through 13 November 2026, the AirTrain construction arrangements replace the train-station connection with shuttle buses on weekdays from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. From the airport, take AirTrain to P4 and transfer to the station shuttle. In the opposite direction, shuttles run from the rail station to the terminals. Allow an additional 10–15 minutes during these hours.
Keep the service notice and your hotel route available while traveling. On a compatible, unlocked phone, Roafly’s USA eSIM is a data-only option for maps and transport updates.

LaGuardia is worth checking early when your route has a convenient nonstop. Its inexpensive public transport options can make a real difference to the total price, particularly for a solo traveler who is comfortable changing from bus to train.
The Q70 LaGuardia Link is free and serves Terminals B and C. It connects with subway services at Jackson Heights–Roosevelt Avenue/74 St–Broadway and with the LIRR at Woodside.
Using the Q70 and a standard subway ride costs $3 per adult at the fares checked for this guide. There is no additional airport rail charge on this route. You do, however, carry your luggage through a bus-to-subway transfer.
The LIRR via Woodside is another choice, with a separate rail ticket. Not every LIRR train stops at Woodside, so select the service for that station rather than boarding the first train headed toward Manhattan.
Uptown stays deserve a different comparison: the M60 bus serves the airport and stops along 125th Street and farther west toward Broadway. An address near those stops may make the M60 more convenient than going through Midtown.
Domestic flights and international arrivals with US preclearance both use LaGuardia. Compare the nonstop options from your departure point before deciding whether it belongs on your shortlist.
Compare one total for everyone traveling: flights, baggage and seat charges, both airport transfers, and any rental-car, parking or toll costs. Keep the baggage allowance and itinerary assumptions the same between options.
The cheapest flight can lose its advantage if it requires an extra connection, an unsuitable arrival time or a costly transfer. Include both airport journeys in your budget for a USA trip; the return journey may use a different airport or transport option.
JFK’s AirTrain has a group fare, so multiplying the individual fare by your party size can overstate the cost. With the same payment method used within five minutes, the first rider pays $8.75 and additional riders pay $4.50 each, for up to five people.
Four adults therefore pay $22.25 for AirTrain, plus $12 for four standard subway fares: $34.25 one way using the fares checked on 5 November 2026. The equivalent Q70-and-subway calculation from LaGuardia is $12 for four adults.
Taxis work differently because you compare the vehicle’s fare with the group’s total public transport cost. Under the NYC taxi fare rules, standard yellow-taxi journeys between JFK and Manhattan have a $70 flat fare, plus applicable surcharges, tolls and any tip. LaGuardia journeys use the meter, plus a $5 surcharge and other applicable charges.
With several suitcases, a taxi may be worth paying for. Compare a vehicle that can accommodate both your party and your bags.
Use the official taxi queue or the pickup point shown in your booked ride app. Familiarity with taxi and payment scams is useful when weighing an unsolicited offer against your planned transfer.
Treat your landing time as the start of the arrival process. You still need to leave the aircraft, complete any arrival formalities, collect checked luggage and reach the transport connection. Leave enough time for those steps before the train or bus you intend to catch.
Look up the last suitable service for your travel date and keep a fallback transfer in the budget. Install the travel apps for the USA you will use for tickets and directions before departure, particularly if your plan combines airport transport with another train.
International travelers should also review USA customs rules while packing. Bag contents and declaration preparation are easier to address at home than in the arrivals hall.
Using one airport on arrival and another at the end of your New York stay can work well. Price each transfer from the hotel and read the airport codes on both bookings.
Changing airports between connecting flights is a much larger commitment. You need to collect checked bags, travel across the region, check in again and pass through security at the next airport. Prefer a connection within the same airport when the alternative requires that extra journey.
If New York is the first stop before a road trip, compare the rental-car collection and return locations alongside the flights. Include any one-way fee, parking and tolls in the quote, and plan how you will be getting around the USA beyond the city before choosing a car for the whole stay.
