Istanbul Airport offers several ways to spend a layover, but the right choice starts with your next flight and which side of passport control you can use. Staying airside keeps an international connection simpler; leaving for a hotel or sightseeing adds entry formalities and a return journey.
Plan around priority: sleep, a meal and shower, or a short visit to Istanbul. Combining all three can leave little time to enjoy them.
Start Here: Check Your Airport, Ticket and Baggage
This guide covers Istanbul Airport (IST). Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) is a separate airport, with different facilities and transport connections. If you are still choosing flights, compare Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen before booking. An itinerary arriving at and departing from the other requires a ground transfer and entry into Türkiye.

Establish three things before making plans:
-
Your flight: international or domestic.
-
Your ticket arrangement: a through-ticket connection or flights bought separately.
-
Your baggage destination: the airport printed on the baggage receipt, plus whether the airline requires collection at IST.
International-to-international passengers with boarding passes and through-checked baggage can often remain in the international transit area. Follow the transfer signs and any required screening; visit the transit desk if you still need your next boarding pass.
With separate tickets, checked baggage may require collection and a new check-in, which means entering Türkiye. Even with hand luggage, the airline must be able to complete document checks and issue or accept your boarding pass without a landside visit.
Connecting to a domestic flight involves entering Türkiye. Ask the airline where to collect your checked baggage, since handling can depend on the ticket and destination. If you bring bags through customs at IST, Türkiye’s customs rules for personal belongings and restricted items become relevant.
Staying Airside or Entering Türkiye

Airside means the controlled passenger area beyond the relevant security and passport checks. Landside means the public side of the terminal, including arrivals services and access to ground transport.
Leaving international transit to collect baggage, stay at a landside hotel or join a city tour requires permission to enter Türkiye. Visa exemptions, e-Visa eligibility and passport conditions depend on your nationality and circumstances. Use the Türkiye entry requirements guide for arrival preparation and the official visa rules by nationality for your passport.
Remaining airside also deserves a document check. Certain passport-and-route combinations have airport transit visa requirements: Türkiye has introduced an electronic airport transit visa requirement for Indian and Nepalese passport holders travelling through IST to Mexico, Panama, Colombia or Venezuela. Check the applicable transit requirements with your airline before departure.
Decide which side you need before booking a room. Returning airside involves the applicable departure controls and boarding-pass requirements.
Where to Sleep at Istanbul Airport
During an overnight connection, compare how much sleeping time remains after reaching a facility, checking in and leaving for your gate.
| Rest option | Where it is | Best suited to | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary terminal seating | Within the area you can access | Resting without buying a room | Comfort, nearby sockets and available seats vary |
| iGA Sleepod | International departures, airside, near the D gates | A shorter private rest | Space and access duration depend on the purchase or membership |
| YOTELAIR Istanbul Airport | International airside, within the duty-free area | Sleeping between international flights | Requires a valid international boarding pass |
| YOTEL Istanbul Airport | Landside, on the departures floor | Domestic connections or travellers already entering Türkiye | International arrivals must be eligible to enter the country |
Sleep pods and terminal seating
iGA Sleepod provides a private cabin for resting inside international departures. Its Priority Pass offer currently covers a two-hour stay, subject to availability; bedding extras may be charged separately. Direct purchases can have different terms, so compare the total for the time and bedding you need.
If you find suitable terminal seating, keep valuables secured, set an alarm and allow time to reach the gate.
YOTELAIR versus landside YOTEL

The similar names make this an easy booking mistake. YOTELAIR is inside international airside; YOTEL is on the public side of the terminal.
YOTELAIR offers overnight rooms and daytime hourly bookings. Its current hourly-room arrangement has a four-hour minimum within the 04:00–23:59 window, with checkout before midnight. Overnight stays and separate sleep-cabin products have their own booking conditions.
If you must collect checked baggage or your next flight is domestic, the hotel directs you to the landside property. Reserve the location that fits your passenger route, then compare the room’s usable hours with the time you actually have.
Lounges, Showers, Food, Wi-Fi and Charging
Is a lounge worth paying for?
Lounges make most sense when you want a meal, somewhere to sit, charging and perhaps a shower. Compare admission with your likely spending during the permitted stay.
The international iGA Lounge has food, showers and rest facilities. Access may come through a paid booking, an eligible card or another agreement, each with its own conditions. Turkish Airlines lounge access also depends on the applicable cabin, status and flight rules.
Look at the permitted visit length before treating a lounge as your overnight plan. Priority Pass currently lists a two-hour maximum for the international iGA Lounge. That is a condition of that access route, not a universal limit for every lounge purchase.
If uninterrupted sleep is your priority, compare a pod or hotel room first. If you mainly need food and a shower, a lounge may be the more useful purchase. Shower access, queues and any extra charges should be included in that comparison.
Eating during the connection

Check your gate before settling in for a meal. During a short connection, eat within the area you can already access.
Look for familiar Turkish choices such as börek, pide or a simit with tea when browsing menus. Knowing a few Turkish dishes to try makes choosing easier than relying on photographs alone. Outlet hours and menus vary, particularly overnight.
Getting and keeping your phone charged
iGA provides free, unlimited airport Wi-Fi. Select the iGA Wi-Fi network and use the mobile/SMS login or an access code obtained from a kiosk. If you cannot receive an SMS, use the kiosk route rather than assuming you need to buy a local SIM.
Download your boarding pass and hotel confirmation while connected. Keep your cable accessible and charge before a nap or city visit.
Airport Wi-Fi may cover your needs if you remain in the terminal. If you leave, arrange of the mobile internet options in Türkiye so your return route and booking details remain accessible away from Wi-Fi.
During a longer stopover, compare eSIM options for Türkiye by allowance, validity and device support. An unlocked, compatible phone can also be prepared with a Türkiye eSIM before travel for maps and messaging. Roafly’s plans are data-only, so retain another way to receive any SMS your accounts require.
Baggage Storage: Use the Correct Side of the Terminal
Use storage you can reach at both drop-off and collection.
Airside: iGA’s left-luggage service is in international departures, behind the escalators leading up to the iGA Lounge. It serves a different passenger route from storage in the public arrivals area.
Landside: a paid airport luggage office is located beside the Touristanbul registration desk in arrivals. This is relevant if you have entered Türkiye and want to leave bags before a tour or independent outing.
Keep your passport, boarding pass, medication and valuables with you. Before paying, establish the collection location, operating hours and charge for your intended duration. Include collection time in the return plan.
Through-checked baggage will not normally be available during an ordinary international connection. Pack your overnight essentials in hand luggage instead of planning to retrieve a change of clothes from the hold.
Touristanbul, Stopover and Turkish Airlines’ Hotel Service
Turkish Airlines offers three different services that are often confused. Start with the purpose of each, then apply the eligibility rules.
| Service | What it provides | Main timing condition | Other decisive requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Touristanbul | Organised sightseeing with transport | A 6–24-hour international connection that fits a tour | Eligible ticket beginning with 235; arriving and departing flights under the same reservation |
| Connecting-flight Hotel Service | Hotel accommodation and airport–hotel transport | At least 12 hours in Economy or 9 hours in Business | No shorter connecting-flight option available for the route |
| Stopover in Istanbul | Advance-arranged hotel accommodation with breakfast | A connection of 20–168 hours | Eligible round-trip itinerary and departure market; advance application and hotel voucher |
Turkish Airlines service conditions checked on 28 September 2026. Meeting a time threshold alone does not establish eligibility.
Touristanbul: match the tour to your flights
Touristanbul operates from IST, not Sabiha Gökçen. Eligible international transfer passengers can join a scheduled tour if its timing fits their connection.
Use the Touristanbul eligibility and registration details to find a suitable departure. Participants must report to the registration desk in arrivals at least 30 minutes before the tour starts, including those with an reservation. Reaching that desk involves entering Türkiye.
The transfer-area information desk can help establish eligibility before you proceed to arrivals. Tour-specific timing rules should guide this organised outing; they are not a substitute for planning an independent trip back to the airport.
Hotel Service: the shorter-connection rule matters
The connecting-flight Hotel Service applies to qualifying long connections created by flight schedules. If a shorter connection is offered for your route, choosing a longer does not create hotel eligibility—even when the shorter option is sold out.
Eligible passengers apply at the Hotel Desk in arrivals. Accommodation is outside the transit area, and the service includes airport–hotel transport. Entry documents remain the passenger’s responsibility.
Stopover: arrange it before travelling
The Stopover in Istanbul programme is for an eligible planned stay. Apply at least 72 hours before the flight associated with the accommodation and obtain the hotel voucher before starting your journey.
Conditions include the departure market, a qualifying round trip under reservation and Turkish Airlines-operated flights. The standard offer is hotel night in Economy or two in Business, with market-specific exceptions.
Stopover covers accommodation and breakfast; airport–hotel transfers are at your expense. Touristanbul and Stopover accommodation cannot be combined on the same route.
Can You Leave IST and Visit Istanbul?

Leaving is reasonable when you can enter Türkiye, complete any baggage formalities and still have useful time in the city after allowing for both journeys and departure procedures.
Count backwards from your flight. Establish a terminal-return target that covers the airline’s check-in or bag-drop deadline, passport control, security, walking to the gate and boarding cutoff. Then subtract your return transport time and a disruption allowance.
The M11 metro connects IST with Gayrettepe, where city connections are available. Its advertised airport–Gayrettepe train journey is about 30 minutes; that excludes reaching the station, waiting, changing lines and walking to your destination. Road journeys also need to reflect traffic at your actual travel time. Compare the relevant transport options in Türkiye before choosing your return route.
What a ten-hour connection can leave you
Consider this illustrative planning budget, rather than an estimate of airport queues or guaranteed journey times:
| Part of the layover | Time reserved |
|---|---|
| Arrival, entry formalities and reaching transport | 1 hour |
| Outward journey, including waits and walking | 1½ hours |
| Time in city area | 3 hours |
| Transport disruption allowance | ½ hour |
| Return journey | 1½ hours |
| Departure procedures and reaching the gate | 2½ hours |
| Total | 10 hours |
Ten hours between flights can become three hours in the city. Replace these allowances with figures appropriate to your trip, then recalculate after landing. If arrival formalities consume the sightseeing window, stay at the airport.
Keep the outing simple
Pick area and main activity: a short walk with a meal, or a single preplanned visit. A compact outing is easier to shorten than a route involving several districts and timed admissions.
Before leaving Wi-Fi, save the return route and set up the travel apps you will use in Türkiye. Decide how you will pay for transport and food; the guide to cards, cash and ATMs in Türkiye can help you avoid making a large cash withdrawal for a brief visit.
Set a departure alarm for leaving the city, not just a reminder for your flight. If the return journey grows longer, cut the activity short. During an overnight connection with little useful visiting time, spending the break on sleep can leave you better prepared for the next flight.
