The choice can change with a cheaper flight, a nonstop journey or a better arrival time. Both airports can serve an Istanbul city break, but the useful comparison runs all the way to your hotel door. Add baggage, ground transport and the final connection before deciding which ticket offers better value.
IST vs SAW at a glance
| Airport | Strongest fit | Main rail access | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Istanbul Airport (IST) | European-side stays, including Taksim and the historic peninsula | M11 toward Gayrettepe or Halkalı, with connections | Your hotel may still require another train, a bus or a final taxi ride |
| Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) | Kadıköy, Moda and accommodation along the M4 corridor | M4 to Kadıköy; Marmaray interchange at Ayrılık Çeşmesi | European-side stays add a cross-city journey |
Think of these as starting points for your search. If your preferred nonstop flight lands at the other airport, compare that complete itinerary before adding a flight connection just to arrive on your hotel’s side of Istanbul.
Match the airport to your hotel area

Sultanahmet and the historic peninsula
IST is the first airport we would compare for a short sightseeing stay around Sultanahmet. Its European-side location and Havaist’s Sultanahmet service give you a practical starting point, particularly with luggage.
The Sultanahmet shuttle route serves the Çatladıkapı stop and includes Sirkeci. Plot the stop against your accommodation: the airport coach journey can still leave a walk or a short local transfer.
SAW remains workable. Its M4 line connects with Marmaray at Ayrılık Çeşmesi, giving you a rail option across the city. A substantial airfare saving may justify that journey, especially if you arrive during the day and travel light.
Taksim, Beyoğlu and the M2 corridor
IST gives you M11 access to Gayrettepe, where you can continue on M2 toward Taksim and Şişhane. Havaist also serves Taksim.
SAW has a direct HAVABÜS service to Taksim, so staying in Beyoğlu does not rule it out. Compare the coach’s arrival point with the exact hotel address, particularly if you are carrying large bags.
With otherwise similar flights, IST would be our preference here. SAW becomes more attractive when its schedule or total fare produces a meaningful benefit.
Kadıköy and Moda
SAW has the clearest rail advantage for Kadıköy: the M4 runs directly from the airport to Kadıköy station. Moda then requires the final local journey to your accommodation.
IST can still be a sensible choice if its flight is considerably better. The question is whether the fare or schedule benefit outweighs the extra ground journey for your party.
If accommodation is still undecided, choose where to stay in Istanbul around the places you want to visit. Airport convenience should influence that decision without taking over the whole holiday.
Halkalı, Küçükçekmece and western Istanbul
IST deserves particular attention for accommodation around Halkalı and places conveniently connected to it. The Halkalı extension of the airport metro opened in June 2026, adding another useful way to reach the city from IST.
The airport metro now runs between Gayrettepe and Halkalı via Istanbul Airport. For western Istanbul, compare the Halkalı connection with a route through Gayrettepe; the station nearest your hotel determines which direction is useful.
Compare the whole transfer, including the last stop

Rail is valuable when you want to keep the main part of your journey away from road traffic. Its convenience depends on how many changes and walking sections sit between the airport and your room.
SAW’s M4 has a published end-to-end journey time of 52 minutes to Kadıköy. That is train time. Add getting out of the terminal, reaching the platform, waiting and continuing from Kadıköy to your hotel.
From IST, M11 gives you two directions to consider. Gayrettepe connects you with the M2 corridor; Halkalı provides access to Marmaray and western districts. Neither route gives every visitor a single-train ride to their accommodation.
Coaches may be easier with suitcases when their stop is convenient. The HAVABÜS estimate for SAW–Taksim is approximately 1½ hours, subject to traffic. Use it as the operator’s route estimate, with the remaining hotel journey added separately.
The M4 journey time, M11 route and HAVABÜS estimate were checked on 28 September 2026.
The final few kilometres can change your decision more than the airport’s headline journey time. Trace the hotel route using suitable transport and map apps for Türkiye, including the walk from the last stop.
If you expect to use a taxi for that final leg, include it in the comparison. The practical details of public transport and taxis in Türkiye become useful you have narrowed down the airport and route.
How much cheaper does the other airport need to be?
There is no fixed saving that makes SAW or IST the better buy. Calculate the difference for everyone travelling, using comparable baggage and ticket conditions.
Your total should include:
-
Flights: fares for the whole party, checked bags and any seat selection you intend to buy.
-
Ground transport: airport journeys at both ends of the stay, including local connections.
-
Timing costs: accommodation or transport you would need because of a very early departure or late arrival.
-
Convenience: the extra changes, walking and travel time you are willing to accept.
Suppose two adults find flights that are €50 cheaper each through SAW. That creates a €100 saving before ground transport. Subtract any additional transfer costs, then decide whether the remaining saving is worth the different arrival time and journey.
This is a calculation example, not an airfare or transfer quote.
Group size matters because public transport is generally priced per passenger, while a private transfer quote applies to the booked vehicle and service. Compare the total for your actual party, with enough luggage space and any child seats you need.
Keep the hotel address identical when comparing quotes. A coach fare to Taksim and a private transfer to a Sultanahmet hotel cover different journeys.
Late arrivals can change the answer
Use the time you expect to leave the terminal when planning transport. Scheduled landing time comes before passport control, baggage collection and the walk to your departure point.
M4’s standard operating hours are 06:00–00:00. It also participates in Istanbul’s weekend night metro service on Friday and Saturday nights. These operating details were checked on 28 September 2026.
That can make SAW particularly useful for a late arrival followed by a journey along M4. A trip requiring Marmaray, a tram or another connection needs the operating hours of that separate service too.
IST’s M11 has a separate operating timetable. For an arrival after rail services finish, compare an available airport coach with a taxi or booked transfer to the hotel.
Arrange mobile data before departure if you will rely on live directions or messages to your accommodation. You can compare eSIM options for Türkiye beforehand, and keep the hotel address and essential booking details available offline.
The better late-night airport is the with a workable journey at your arrival time. A daytime transport comparison can produce the wrong answer after midnight.
Connecting flights: check whether the airport changes
Read the airport codes on every flight in the itinerary. Arriving at IST and departing from SAW means travelling between two separate airports across Istanbul.
Changing airports after an international arrival requires entering Türkiye. Review Türkiye’s entry requirements for your passport before booking that connection.
The connection must account for arrival procedures, any baggage collection, the ground journey and the next airline’s check-in and bag-drop deadlines. road journey estimate cannot tell you whether the complete connection is workable.
We would favour a same-airport itinerary when the alternative creates a tight airport change. With separately booked flights, understand what happens if the first flight is late and you miss the second.
Arriving through airport and departing through the other after several days in Istanbul is a different decision. It can work well if the flight times suit you; simply price the transfer for each end of the stay.
Before you book, settle these four details
-
Your hotel’s exact location. Compare the journey to the address, including the final walk or local connection.
-
The complete flight price. Use the same baggage and seat assumptions for both airports.
-
Transport at your actual travel time. Include the return journey, especially for an early flight.
-
Any airport change. Check every airport code when your trip includes connecting flights.
Once booked, save your hotel’s location and transfer instructions. If your phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible, installing a Türkiye eSIM before departure can help you access directions and coordinate your arrival.
