The useful apps depend on what you’ll actually do. Start with transport and food delivery where you need them, save your booking contacts, then prepare the maps and translation tools you may already have.
| What you need | Apps to consider | When they earn their place |
|---|---|---|
| City rides and airport transfers | Uber; inDrive as an optional alternative | You’re arranging your own transport |
| Meals and everyday supplies | PedidosYa, Uber Eats | You’re staying in an apartment or eating outside your hotel |
| Contact with hosts and operators | Your accommodation or excursion provider uses it | |
| Mobile data away from Wi-Fi | Roafly | You need travel data and have an unlocked, compatible phone |
| Places, addresses and directions | Google Maps | You’re exploring independently |
| Menus and everyday Spanish | Google Translate | You need help reading or explaining something |

Uber is the first ride-hailing app to prepare for an independent stay in Santo Domingo or Punta Cana. Entering the destination before you travel helps avoid explaining an unfamiliar address, while the app lets you review the available ride options and estimated price.
Sign in before departure, make sure you can access your account and review your payment settings. If Uber is already on your phone, this preparation matters more than downloading another taxi app.
Punta Cana Airport supports Uber pickups. After requesting your ride, follow the meeting instructions in the app: the correct pickup point may differ from the nearest terminal exit. Match the driver and vehicle details before getting in.
Keep your arrival arrangements appropriate to the trip. Families with several suitcases, passengers needing a child seat and guests arriving with an included resort transfer should settle those details before choosing an app ride. Beyond the main service areas, arrange your return journey before relying on finding a driver later.
inDrive is an optional alternative to investigate for Santo Domingo, particularly if you want another way to arrange city rides. Its fare-offer model lets you propose a price and review responding drivers.
Complete registration and look at the available payment arrangements before depending on it. Support for overseas phone numbers and foreign-issued cards is not clearly established for Dominican use, so keep it as a backup until your own setup works.
You don’t need two ride apps for a holiday built around prearranged transfers. Match the download to your plans; our guide to getting around the Dominican Republic covers the wider choice between taxis, buses and other transport.
Food delivery deserves a place near the top of the list if you’re renting an apartment, arriving late or traveling with children. Its value is much smaller when your meals are included at a resort.

PedidosYa is worth checking for restaurant meals, groceries and everyday supplies at your accommodation. Enter the actual delivery address first: the available businesses depend on where you’re staying.
Set up the account before you need dinner. Overseas-number and foreign-card acceptance is not clearly documented, and registration may involve additional personal details. Having the app installed alone doesn’t establish that you can complete an order.
Payment methods vary by business. Cash in Dominican pesos can be available, alongside electronic payments, but use the choices shown for your particular order. Review the final total, including delivery and service charges, before confirming.
Uber Eats is another useful option in served areas, including Santo Domingo and Santiago. If you already use it, enter your Dominican accommodation address and compare the restaurants, delivery estimates and checkout total with PedidosYa.
There’s no need to decide on a single winner before seeing what serves your address. One app may have the restaurant you want; the other may offer a more convenient delivery.
Give the courier a usable meeting point. Include the building name, entrance and apartment details where relevant. At a hotel or gated property, ask reception where deliveries can be collected rather than assuming a courier can reach your room.
Menus are also an easy introduction to Dominican dishes to try. Keep a separate plan for paying by card or cash, especially if a delivery app rejects your usual payment method.

WhatsApp becomes useful when your host, transfer company or excursion operator offers it as a contact channel. Save that number from your booking confirmation or the business’s official contact details before departure.
Use the conversation to settle specifics: the pickup time, hotel entrance, meeting point and who to contact if your flight is delayed. Share a location pin when an address alone leaves room for confusion.
Keep booking confirmations saved separately on your phone. Messages are convenient for coordination, but you should still be able to find your reservation details without scrolling through a conversation.
If WhatsApp is already working, keep the existing account. Switching your mobile data connection to a travel eSIM doesn’t require a new WhatsApp number.

The moment mobile data becomes useful is often outside the lobby: locating a driver, receiving a delivery message or contacting an excursion operator after leaving the hotel.
The Roafly app lets you buy and manage your Dominican Republic eSIM, view remaining data and top up. The country plan uses Claro, with 4G where available, and supports hotspot use within your purchased allowance.
Before buying, check your phone’s compatibility. You need an unlocked, eSIM-compatible device. Install over a stable internet connection and follow the instructions for your phone.
The plan supplies mobile data; it doesn’t include a Dominican phone number or SMS. That distinction matters if another app sends an account verification code. Complete those checks while you can still receive messages on your registered number, and review your home carrier’s charges before using that line abroad.
If you’re still deciding on an allowance or provider, compare Dominican Republic eSIM plans before purchasing.
Google Maps is a practical choice for finding places and organizing your stops. The useful preparation is saving the right locations: your accommodation entrance, an excursion meeting point and the exact bus terminal for your departure.
In Punta Cana, save the entrance or meeting point supplied by your hotel rather than relying only on a pin somewhere within a large property. In Santo Domingo, group the places you want to visit so you can see which stops fit together.
Download the areas you’ll need while connected to Wi-Fi. Offline maps don’t provide walking, cycling or public transport directions, and offline driving loses live traffic and alternative routes. Driving directions also require the whole route to fall within the downloaded area. Keep mobile data available if you want live directions while walking around the Zona Colonial.
Google Translate earns its place through small, practical tasks: reading a Spanish menu, understanding a delivery message or explaining which entrance you’re waiting beside.
Download Spanish and your own language before departure where offline downloads are available. Camera translation can help with printed text; typing a short sentence is useful when you want to show someone a clear request.
Keep messages simple. “I am waiting at the main entrance” is easier to translate accurately than a long explanation containing several questions. Show the original accommodation name and address alongside the translation so proper names remain recognizable.
Offline features vary by language and device. Try the functions you expect to use before the trip instead of assuming every camera or conversation feature will work without a connection.
A few minutes of preparation can prevent more inconvenience than adding several extra apps.
Open your chosen apps and sign in. Complete any phone verification while you can receive the code.
Enter your accommodation address in the delivery app. See what serves it, then review your account’s payment options without placing an order.
Save your transport and accommodation contacts. Include the confirmed meeting point and a copy of each booking.
Download maps, language packs and essential documents. Open the saved material once to make sure it’s accessible.
Decide how you’ll get mobile data. Compare the available internet options in the Dominican Republic if you haven’t chosen between roaming, a local SIM and an eSIM.
The Dominican Republic’s arrival and departure E-Ticket is a free online form. Complete it through the official government portal; you don’t need a separate travel app for this task. Keep the resulting confirmation available on your phone.
Our guide to entry requirements and the E-Ticket covers the wider arrival preparations.
Intercity bus journeys also deserve a separate booking check. Use the chosen operator’s official website or booking channel to establish the departure terminal and current service details, then save your ticket or confirmation.
Resort guests with meals and transfers included can keep their setup light. Independent visitors will get more value from having a working ride account, a usable delivery option and their next meeting point saved before they land.
