Northern Cyprus has its own entry procedures, and your arrival route can affect where you can travel afterwards. Most nationalities can obtain a tourist visa at arrival, while some need approval before travelling. The entry guidance below was checked on 22 October 2026.

Ercan Airport receives non-stop passenger flights only from Türkiye. Arriving through Larnaca or Paphos in the south involves the Republic of Cyprus’s entry rules before you can continue north. These routes need different preparation, especially if you want to visit both sides of the island.
The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, commonly called Northern Cyprus or the TRNC, is recognised as an independent state only by Türkiye. The Republic of Cyprus is the internationally recognised state, although its government does not exercise effective control over the north.
Foreign visitors can still travel to Northern Cyprus. The practical issue is that permission granted by the northern authorities does not establish your right to enter the Republic of Cyprus’s government-controlled areas.
Two distinctions matter when planning:
Flying to Ercan: You arrive through an airport administered by the northern authorities, using a flight from Türkiye.
Flying to Larnaca or Paphos: You first enter through a recognised Republic of Cyprus airport, then approach an authorised crossing point to travel north.
The Republic of Cyprus considers entry through Ercan or northern seaports unlawful under its legislation. That position can affect a subsequent attempt to cross south, depart through a southern airport, or return to the Republic later.
Your nationality determines whether you can seek admission at arrival or need a visa beforehand. The examples below concern ordinary tourist travel.
| Passport nationality | Northern Cyprus entry route |
|---|---|
| United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, Germany and France | A visa may be issued at arrival, subject to immigration assessment. |
| Türkiye | Travel with a valid passport or accepted Turkish national identity card. |
| Syria, Nigeria and Armenia | Obtain a visa before travelling. |
These are examples, not an exhaustive nationality list. The northern authorities’ visa requirements provide the broader rules.
The official Northern Cyprus e-Visa portal offers online tourism applications, document uploads and application tracking. An online application must be approved; submitting a form is not permission to travel.
There is an important inconsistency in the official guidance: the general foreign ministry page still directs Syrian, Nigerian and Armenian applicants to apply in person at a mission abroad, while the e-Visa portal provides an electronic application route.
If you hold one of these passports, confirm the required application channel with the Immigration Directorate or a TRNC mission before committing to non-refundable travel. Do not rely on an older guide promising a visa at the airport.
The northern rules specify at least two months’ document validity for EU citizens and citizens of countries represented there, and six months for others. Check the category that applies to your nationality rather than assuming one universal rule.
EU and Schengen-country citizens may also use national identity cards under the northern rules. However, the document you carry must work for every part of your journey, including transit through Türkiye or entry through the Republic of Cyprus.
Turkish citizens travelling with an identity card should confirm the airline’s accepted card format and any requirements for children before departure. Permission to use an identity card for the north does not extend to the south.
Keep these supporting details accessible:
Accommodation booking or host details.
Evidence of sufficient funds.
Return or onward travel arrangements.
Documents explaining the visit, including a family invitation where relevant.
Save copies offline so you can show them without mobile reception. Carrying clear accommodation and departure information also makes it easier to explain a trip involving more than one country.
Immigration admission and baggage clearance are separate procedures. Review the Northern Cyprus customs rules for the goods and cash you intend to carry.
Hotel or rented-accommodation visits may receive up to 30 days. Prepaid accommodation evidence can support a grant of up to 90 days. The overall limit is 90 days within 180 days, and the period actually granted at entry controls your stay.
Check that departure deadline before leaving passport control. A three-month hotel reservation does not itself establish a three-month immigration permission.
If your plans change, approach the immigration authorities before your permission expires. Do not assume that a longer booking, a pending application or a trip across a checkpoint extends your authorised stay.
Tourist admission also has a specific purpose. Longer residence, employment and study involve separate procedures. The local laws in Northern Cyprus cover other rules relevant during your visit.
Non-stop passenger services to Ercan Airport, code ECN, operate from Türkiye. Journeys advertised from other countries involve a Turkish connection or stop.
Look at the individual flight segments before buying. A booking displayed as a single journey to Ercan does not necessarily mean one aircraft, one airport or no additional document checks.
Northern Cyprus admission and Turkish transit permission are separate questions. Some nationalities face a special double transit visa requirement for journeys to and from Northern Cyprus through Türkiye.
The published list includes Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nigeria, among others. The requirement can apply even when the passenger remains within the airport’s transit area.
When contacting a Turkish embassy or consulate, specify Northern Cyprus as your final destination and provide the complete return itinerary. Asking only whether you need a visa for an ordinary airport connection may miss this route-specific requirement.
Check whether both flights use the same Turkish airport. Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) are separate airports; transferring between them requires entering Türkiye and travelling overland.
Our comparison of Istanbul’s two airports explains the practical differences. If your connection requires an airport change, baggage collection outside the transit area or an overnight city stay, assess Türkiye’s entry requirements as part of the trip.
Ask the airline whether your particular itinerary permits an airside transfer and whether your baggage is checked through to Ercan.
Larnaca (LCA) and Paphos (PFO) provide an alternative approach: enter the Republic of Cyprus, then travel north through an authorised crossing point.
This route begins with the Republic’s admission requirements. You need an accepted travel document and, where applicable, a Republic of Cyprus visa or a qualifying exemption.
Some eligible visitors can use specified Schengen visas or residence permits instead of obtaining a separate Cyprus visa. Turkish and Azerbaijani citizens are generally excluded from that substitution, although separate rights may apply to qualifying family members of EU citizens.
The Republic’s visa and entry guidance also addresses accommodation. Its authorities warn that stays at certain properties in the north, associated with disputed ownership, can affect visa decisions or admission. A northern hotel reservation should therefore be assessed as part of the itinerary, rather than treated as automatic support for entry through a southern airport.
At the crossing, carry your travel document and relevant entry permissions. Use designated crossing points and establish whether your chosen point accepts pedestrians, vehicles or both.
Keep route planning separate from sightseeing near restricted areas. Our guide to safety around checkpoints and military areas covers those additional considerations.
Do not book this combination on the assumption that crossing south will be straightforward.
The Republic of Cyprus regards arrival through Ercan as unlawful entry under its rules. Consequences can include fines, refusal of entry or exit, and difficulties at the crossing. A valid passport or visa does not remove the issue created by the original arrival route.
If your holiday includes both sides, establish an acceptable entry, crossing and departure arrangement before purchasing flights. Arriving through Larnaca or Paphos addresses the initial airport-entry issue, but you must still satisfy the Republic’s visa, accommodation and other admission conditions.
Work through the journey in order:
Select your arrival route. Decide between Ercan via Türkiye and arrival through the Republic of Cyprus.
Identify every document requirement. Include northern admission, Turkish transit or entry, and southern entry where relevant.
Match the flights to those permissions. Inspect airport codes, connections, baggage arrangements and the departure airport.
Prepare your accommodation and departure evidence. Keep usable offline copies.
Check the stay actually granted. Use the immigration deadline when finalising your return plans.
Prepare connectivity for the area you will visit, too. Compare Northern Cyprus eSIM plans by their stated coverage rather than assuming every product labelled “Cyprus” serves the same networks.
An unlocked, compatible phone can use a Northern Cyprus eSIM for maps, accommodation messages and transfer coordination after arrival. Keep essential entry documents available offline regardless of the connection you choose.
