Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport has local SIM options, including Airtel outlets listed as open around the clock. Your decision comes down to whether you need a Kenyan phone number, how much time you have after landing and the complete price offered at the counter.

You can buy a local SIM at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, with Airtel and Safaricom among the airport options. Buying on arrival makes sense if you want a Kenyan number and help setting up the line; preparing a travel eSIM before departure suits an unlocked, compatible phone when mobile data is your priority.
Airtel has the clearest published airport shop information, with several JKIA locations listed as operating 24 hours. Safaricom is another airport option, although its precise current counter location and opening hours are less clearly established.
| Operator | Airport location information | Opening hours | Complete airport price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airtel | Terminal 1A, Terminal 1E and Terminal 1A Gate 15 | Listed as 24 hours | Current airport price not reliably published |
| Safaricom | Airport retail outlet; ask staff for the current accessible location | Hours not reliably published | Current airport price not reliably published |
Information checked on 22 October 2026. Airtel locations and hours follow its official shop directory. Safaricom’s airport presence is supported by UN-Habitat visitor information, but its exact current location and hours remain unverified.
Terminal 1A, Terminal 1E and Gate 15 are useful location references when asking for directions. The directory does not establish whether every listed outlet is accessible from your arrival route or which side of security each occupies.
After completing your arrival formalities, ask airport staff for the nearest accessible Airtel shop. If you are staying airside for an international connection, do not assume you can reach an arrivals outlet without entering Kenya.
Published 24-hour opening makes Airtel worth considering for an overnight arrival. Allow time for registration and setup, particularly if someone is waiting to collect you.
Safaricom deserves consideration if you want a local line and intend to arrange M-PESA during your trip. Explain both needs at the counter: purchasing a data bundle and completing mobile-wallet registration are separate tasks.
Ask airport staff for the current Safaricom outlet rather than relying on an old terminal photograph. Without a reliable current opening schedule, keep a backup connection ready if Safaricom is essential to your plans.
Get the complete amount payable, including the SIM or starter pack, chosen bundle and any additional setup or service charge. A package advertised nationally does not establish the total at an airport counter.
Current Airtel Smarta bundle prices provide a useful reference:
KES 300: 3.5 GB for seven days.
KES 500: 7 GB for seven days.
KES 1,000: 22 GB for 30 days.
These are Airtel’s national bundle prices, checked on 22 October 2026. They are not verified airport SIM-and-package totals.
Smarta bundles are available to new and existing prepaid customers and also include calling and messaging allowances. The data is allocated upfront, so the weekly allowance is not divided into a fixed daily limit.
If an airport quote is higher, ask what the difference covers. You might be comparing a bundle-only price with a new-line purchase, a larger package or an additional service. Request the itemized amount before deciding whether the convenience is worth it.

Bring your original, valid passport. Kenya’s subscriber-registration rules accept a valid passport or Foreign National Registration Certificate for foreign subscribers and require registration through an operator or authorized registration agent.
Register the line in your own name. Do not ask a driver or guide to register it under their identity to avoid the process; proxy registration is prohibited apart from the specified arrangements for children.
Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. If it only supports eSIM, establish that the counter can issue and activate a suitable local eSIM before paying for a package.
Handle the purchase in this order:
Describe your trip. Give your length of stay and say whether you need ordinary calls as well as data.
Agree on the total and payment method. Card acceptance at individual counters is not reliably established, so ask before registration begins.
Complete registration. Provide your original identification and keep your documents with you.
Have the bundle loaded. Airtime credit and an active data package are different things.
Test the connection. Turn Wi-Fi off, open a webpage and check your remaining allowance before leaving.
Airtel Smarta can be purchased through *544#, *334# or the My Airtel App using airtime or mobile money. Those bundle-payment methods do not establish which payment methods an airport retailer accepts for the initial SIM purchase.
Keep your new number, receipt and SIM packaging. Ask the employee to show you the bundle’s expiry and balance-check method while you are still at the counter.
Buying at the airport is practical when you need a working local number before leaving, have time for registration and are satisfied with the complete quote. It can also save a separate shop visit during a short stay.
Waiting until Nairobi works better when your transfer is already arranged and you have another way to contact your accommodation. Airtel’s directory includes city locations such as Development House opposite Afya Centre, giving you an alternative if an airport purchase is inconvenient.
Do not assume that a city shop will always be cheaper. Compare the same allowance, validity and included services, then account for any SIM charge and the time needed to reach the store.
Before departure, review Kenya’s airport customs rules so your arrival preparation covers more than connectivity. Save your pickup instructions offline, and read the practical safety advice for Kenya when planning how you will leave the terminal.
Roafly lets you arrange mobile data before departure without depending on an airport shop’s stock, opening hours or physical-SIM availability. Install your Kenya eSIM over a reliable internet connection before travelling, then follow the supplied instructions for connecting in Kenya.
The plans are data-only, with no Kenyan phone number or ordinary calls and SMS. Hotspot use draws from your purchased allowance, and top-ups are supported.
This suits a trip where maps, messaging and online bookings cover your communication needs. You can continue using WhatsApp with your existing registered number while the travel eSIM supplies data. If you need a local number or want to establish your own Kenyan mobile-wallet account, keep that requirement separate from your internet purchase.
Your device must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. On a compatible dual-SIM phone, select the travel eSIM for mobile data and manage your home line’s roaming settings separately.

JKIA has passenger Wi-Fi, and airline airport information lists free Wi-Fi among its facilities. It can help you retrieve pickup details or send an arrival message while you arrange your next connection.
Ask airport staff for the current official network name and follow the displayed sign-in instructions. The current session limit, login requirements and availability at individual arrival points are not reliably established, so save essential details before your flight.
Airport Wi-Fi also stops being useful once you leave its coverage. If you plan to wait until Nairobi to buy a SIM, arrange your transfer and meeting point before walking outside. Our guide to internet options in Kenya explains the alternatives for the rest of your stay.
The practical choice is straightforward: buy at JKIA when a local number and counter assistance justify the stop, wait until town when your arrival is already covered, or prepare Roafly before departure when you mainly need mobile data.
