Walking into the arrival hall and facing the choice between the Red Channel and the Green Channel can be intensely stressful. In Kenya, officials are famously strict, and making an innocent mistake with restricted goods can lead to instant fines or confiscation. Knowing exactly what to declare will get you out of the airport and on your safari without a legal nightmare.

Red Channel vs. Green Channel

If you have nothing to declare and fall under the legal limits, walk through the Green Channel. If you exceed limits or carry restricted goods, you must declare them at the Red Channel. Expect random x-ray and physical baggage checks even in the Green Channel at major entry points like Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), Moi International Airport (MBA), Kisumu International Airport (KIS), and Eldoret International Airport (EDL).

Customs Limits & Allowances

Kenya strictly regulates duty-free entry for international travelers.

Item Limit (Per Person) Notes
Cigarettes / Tobacco 200 cigarettes or 250g of tobacco Must be 18 or older.
Alcohol 1 liter of spirits OR 2 liters of wine Must be 18 or older.
Perfume 250ml Total toiletries cannot exceed 1 liter.
Cash Up to $10,000 USD (or equivalent) Amounts exceeding this MUST be declared.
Personal Goods Up to $500 USD in total value Applies to gifts and new items staying in Kenya.

⚠️ Warning: Allowances are strictly per individual (18+). Family pooling is not permitted. If you exceed these limits, you must declare them and pay standard customs duties.

The "Big Ban" / The Trap

Strict warning: Do not bring any single-use plastic bags into Kenya. This includes duty-free shopping bags and basic Ziploc bags packed in your luggage. The penalty for being caught with plastic carrier bags is a heavy fine of up to $38,000 USD or a potential jail sentence.

Drones are another major trap. You cannot fly or even bring a drone into Kenya without prior written approval and a permit from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA). Unregistered drones will be confiscated immediately at customs.

Banned & Restricted Items List

Attempting to smuggle the following items will result in immediate confiscation and severe legal trouble:

  • Single-use plastic bags of any kind.

  • Narcotics and illegal drugs.

  • Counterfeit currency and fake goods.

  • Pornographic or indecent materials.

  • Wildlife products (such as ivory or rhino horn).

  • Unregistered drones (permit required prior to arrival).

  • Firearms and ammunition (police clearance required).

For the official list, refer to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA)

Fines & Payment

If you are caught with prohibited items or undeclared goods, the consequences are immediate. Customs officials will confiscate banned items like drones or plastic bags on the spot. Fines for undeclared taxable goods must be paid before you are allowed to leave the airport, typically processed via official bank slips or digital mobile payments at the customs desk. Severe offenses involving wildlife products or narcotics will lead to immediate arrest and prosecution.

Instant Internet at Customs

You need reliable internet the moment you land to access your banking app, translate documents, or pull up digital permits if customs officials ask questions. Public airport Wi-Fi is notoriously slow and unreliable when you need it most.
