Hong Kong Airport has SIM card retailers before and after immigration, including a 24-hour 7-Eleven in Terminal 1’s public arrivals hall. The important decisions are whether you need local calls, how much data you want and whether your trip continues to Macao or mainland China.

Yes, you can buy a physical SIM card at Hong Kong International Airport, with 7-Eleven in Terminal 1’s landside arrivals hall providing a practical starting point. Buy locally if you need a voice-enabled package or a large data allowance; prepare an eSIM before departure if mobile data and avoiding a shopping stop matter more.
Terminal 1’s Level 5 arrivals hall is the simplest place to start after entering Hong Kong. Several airport shops sell SIM cards, but their position matters: an outlet before immigration or inside a departures concourse serves a different passenger route from a shop in the public arrivals hall.
| Retail option | Location | Access | Opening hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7-Eleven, 5T058 | Terminal 1, Level 5, Arrivals Meeters & Greeters Hall | Landside, after arrival formalities | 24 hours |
| 7-Eleven, 5E535C | Level 5, Arrivals Pre-Immigration Hall | Before immigration | 24 hours |
| 7-Eleven, 7T094 | Terminal 1, Level 7, Departures Check-in Hall | Public check-in area | 24 hours |
| RELAY | Terminal 1 departure concourses, including East Hall North, North Satellite and Midfield | Restricted departures areas | Hours not reliably published |
Locations and opening information checked on 21 October 2026 using the retailer’s store directory and Hong Kong Tourism Board listings. Current airport price not reliably published; individual SIM stock and setup assistance remain shop-dependent.
Head to shop 5T058 on Level 5 if you have already collected your baggage and cleared customs. Its landside position makes it the clearest option for passengers heading into Hong Kong.
The pre-immigration outlet is an earlier opportunity along the arrival route. You do not need to buy there simply because it is the first shop you encounter.
Treat these as convenience-store purchases: select the package, pay and complete the operator’s activation process. Staff assistance with passport registration is not established as an included service.
You can locate the branches through the 7-Eleven store finder. Before flying, also review the Hong Kong customs rules, since the landside shop comes after those arrival formalities.
RELAY is another airport-listed SIM retailer, with branches in Terminal 1’s departure concourses. These locations are more relevant when you are departing or following an eligible transfer route than when you have already entered the public arrivals hall.
Look at the actual SIM packaging before paying. The retailer’s name does not identify the mobile network, included destinations or allowance.
Published tourist tariffs provide a useful benchmark, but they are not verified airport checkout totals. The price of a particular SIM at HKG depends on the product stocked and any separately disclosed service.
CSL’s Discover Hong Kong tourist range provides the following advertised reference points:
| Tourist package | Advertised price | Data allowance | Where the data works |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3-day pass | HK$58 | 15GB | 10GB shared between Hong Kong and Macao, plus 5GB Hong Kong-only |
| 7-day pass | HK$88 | 50GB | 20GB shared between Hong Kong and Macao, plus 30GB Hong Kong-only |
| 15-day pass | HK$118 | 80GB | 30GB shared between Hong Kong and Macao, plus 50GB Hong Kong-only |
Advertised Discover Hong Kong tariffs checked on 21 October 2026 against Hong Kong Tourism Board information and CSL’s current offer details. These are reference package prices, not confirmed HKG shop totals or stock guarantees.
The advertised passes include unlimited Hong Kong local voice calls. Their headline data allowances need closer attention if you are crossing the border: 50GB does not mean 50GB usable in Macao.
Mainland China is a separate coverage decision. Do not buy a Hong Kong-and-Macao package assuming the same allowance will work in Shenzhen. Match every destination on your itinerary to the exact package you are purchasing.
Before paying, establish four things:
Complete price: the SIM and included pass, plus any separately charged setup service.
Validity: the activation trigger and expiry time.
Allowance: high-speed data, any reduced-speed service and the geographical split.
Voice service: local number, included calls and SMS charges.
Keep the packaging and receipt until the connection works. They identify the product and give you a reference if the allowance differs from what you expected.
Hong Kong-issued local SIM cards require real-name registration before activation. Visitors without a Hong Kong identity card can use an accepted original passport or travel document; HKSAR and British National (Overseas) passports are not accepted as substitutes for HKID under the registration rules.
Real-name registration itself is free. If a retailer offers paid setup assistance, ask what that separate service includes. The official SIM registration rules distinguish registration from buying the mobile service.
Buying the card and obtaining a working connection are separate steps. Without iAM Smart verification, the operator may manually review the submitted information, and processing time varies. A shop being open around the clock does not establish immediate activation around the clock.
Bring your identification and an unlocked phone with an available physical SIM slot. Before opening the SIM packaging, establish the accepted payment method and whether staff will help with registration or expect you to complete it yourself.
Once activation is confirmed, switch off Wi-Fi briefly and test mobile data. If calls are part of your package, test those too. Keep your original SIM somewhere secure rather than loose in a pocket or passport cover.
Buying at HKG is practical when you want a physical SIM before leaving the terminal and the available package fits your trip. It is less compelling when the shop only has a larger or more expensive bundle than you need.
City alternatives include CSL shops, 1O1O Centres, participating convenience stores and the Hong Kong Tourism Board’s Kowloon Visitor Centre at the Star Ferry Concourse in Tsim Sha Tsui. The advantage is having more opportunities to find a suitable package or obtain operator assistance.
Do not assume an identical SIM becomes cheaper simply because you buy it downtown. Compare the same allowance, validity and included services. Our guide to buying a tourist SIM in Hong Kong covers the wider local purchase options.
Waiting until the city also leaves a gap between the terminal and your next connection. Download your accommodation address, booking confirmation and route before leaving airport Wi-Fi if you take this approach.
Roafly’s Hong Kong eSIM lets you arrange mobile data before travelling and install the profile without changing a physical SIM card. It removes the need to find a stocked airport retailer or fit a purchase around shop hours.
The plans are data-only, without a local telephone number, ordinary voice calls or SMS. Hotspot sharing uses your purchased allowance, and top-ups are supported. Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked.
This makes Roafly practical for maps, bookings, messaging and internet-based calls. A local voice-enabled SIM remains useful if you specifically need Hong Kong telephone service or prefer a large local tourist bundle.

Install over a reliable connection before departure and follow the instructions for your selected plan. On arrival, select the travel eSIM for mobile data and apply its required roaming settings. Keep data roaming disabled on your home line unless you intend to use your home operator’s roaming service.
Your itinerary should determine the coverage you buy. Review the included destinations separately if you are also visiting Macao or mainland China. To compare providers and package sizes, use our best eSIM for Hong Kong.
HKG provides free wireless internet in most seating and public areas of its passenger terminals, without registration.
Look for these official network names:
#HKAirport Free WiFi
#HKAirport Hi-Speed WiFi
Select the network, open your browser and accept the connection terms. If the first network is unavailable, the airport also identifies Wi-Fi.HK via HKAirport as an alternative.
The airport Wi-Fi instructions provide connection guidance and assistance details.
Use this connection to retrieve your hotel booking, complete a SIM registration form or contact your eSIM provider. Download the information you need for the onward journey before leaving the terminal.

Can I buy a SIM card after midnight?
The verified 7-Eleven branches above are listed as open 24 hours, including shop 5T058 in the public arrivals hall. SIM stock and the time needed for operator approval are separate from retail opening hours.
Can I buy a SIM before immigration?
Yes, 7-Eleven has a branch at shop 5E535C in the Level 5 Arrivals Pre-Immigration Hall. If you pass it without buying, the landside arrivals branch provides another opportunity after completing arrival formalities.
Is an airport SIM always more expensive?
No reliable like-for-like airport total was available to establish a universal premium. Use the advertised tourist tariffs as reference points and compare the exact product and any additional service before paying.
Will a Hong Kong SIM work in mainland China or Macao?
Only where the purchased package includes service. Even a package covering both Hong Kong and Macao may reserve part of its allowance for Hong Kong alone; mainland China needs its own explicit inclusion.
Do I need a local SIM for a short airside connection?
Free airport Wi-Fi may be sufficient if you are staying inside the terminal and only need messages or flight information. Buying a local SIM becomes more useful if you enter Hong Kong and need mobile service beyond the airport.
Which option makes the most sense after landing?
Head to the landside 7-Eleven if you need a physical SIM and its available package suits your stay. Prepare Roafly before departure if your priority is mobile data without a retail stop, or use airport Wi-Fi temporarily if you prefer to compare local options in the city.
