Sphinx International (SPX) deserves a close look for stays in Sheikh Zayed and 6th of October. If your trip centres on the Giza Pyramids and Grand Egyptian Museum, compare both against your actual hotel address and flight times.
Both airports serve Greater Cairo, but they sit on different sides of the metropolitan area. The right choice can remove an awkward cross-city journey; the wrong one can turn a small airfare saving into another transfer or an inconvenient first night.
Your first hotel is a better starting point than a search for the “best airport in Egypt.” Cairo International sits in the northeast, in Heliopolis. Sphinx serves the western side of Greater Cairo, with access to the Cairo–Alexandria Desert Road.
| Your stay or next step | Airport to consider first | What should decide it |
|---|---|---|
| Heliopolis or New Cairo | CAI | Its eastern location fits this side of the city |
| Sheikh Zayed or 6th of October | SPX | A suitable flight can avoid arriving on the opposite side of Greater Cairo |
| Giza Pyramids or Grand Egyptian Museum area | Compare CAI and SPX | Exact hotel location, arrival time and the transfer offered |
| Downtown Cairo or Zamalek | Compare both | Flight schedule and the journey to your particular address |
| Another flight departing from CAI | CAI | Keeping both flights at the same airport avoids a separate road transfer |
Hotel listings often use “Cairo” or “Giza” broadly. Open the map pin before comparing airports, especially if you are booking a guesthouse near the pyramids or a hotel in one of the western districts.
The same principle applies to sightseeing. Visiting the pyramids for a day does not make SPX the right airport for an entire stay based in eastern Cairo. Match the airport to where you will sleep and where you go next.
CAI is the practical first choice for an east Cairo stay. If your hotel is in Heliopolis or New Cairo, start with flights into CAI and compare SPX only when its schedule or total price offers a worthwhile advantage.

Its other clear use is an onward flight leaving from the same airport. Landing at CAI before another CAI departure removes the need to cross Greater Cairo between flights. You still need time for the connection, including any immigration, baggage collection or terminal change required by your booking.
Pre-booked transport gives you a named destination and an agreed pickup arrangement before you arrive. Cairo Airport Travel has offices in CAI’s arrival halls and provides airport transfers. Your accommodation may also arrange a pickup; compare the vehicle, luggage capacity and final price.
Send the exact hotel address when requesting a quote. “Giza” or “Cairo city centre” leaves too much room for a misunderstanding about where the journey ends. Our advice on getting around Cairo covers the wider choice between taxis and transport apps once you are in the city.
If you intend to buy a physical SIM after landing, allow for that stop before agreeing a pickup time. The options for SIM cards at Cairo Airport belong in your arrival plan, particularly when a driver will be waiting.

SPX makes the most geographical sense when your accommodation is in Sheikh Zayed or 6th of October. With a convenient flight and a suitable transfer, arriving on the western side can fit the trip better than landing across the city at CAI.
Giza sightseeing also makes SPX worth comparing. However, the airport’s name can create the wrong impression: landing at Sphinx does not put you beside the Great Sphinx or at the entrance to the pyramids. You still need a road transfer to your accommodation.
Give your hotel both flight options and ask for a pickup quote from each airport. That produces a useful comparison for your actual destination, particularly if one flight arrives during the day and the other late at night.
On a first visit to SPX, we would arrange a transfer in advance, especially late at night. Flydubai’s Sphinx airport access information directs passengers towards taxis or private transfers and identifies public transport access at Juhaina Square and Al Rimaya Square, away from the terminal.
That extra step matters if your choice depends on taking public transport straight after landing. Build the journey from the terminal to your hotel into the comparison, including any changes along the way.
If you plan to request a ride through an app, compare the best eSIM plans for Egypt before departure and save your hotel address offline. Keep a pre-arranged transfer as a separate option when a predictable pickup matters more than finding the lowest quote after landing.
Neither airport wins every price comparison. Your departure city, dates, baggage and preferred flight times determine which ticket offers better value.
Compare the two options using the same requirements:
Flights for everyone travelling: include the cabin and checked baggage you need, plus any seat-selection cost you intend to pay.
Transport for the whole group: establish whether the transfer quote is per vehicle or per passenger, and whether your luggage fits.
Arrival and departure transfers: price both directions if you are returning through the same airport.
Accommodation caused by the schedule: include an extra night when an arrival time or connection makes one necessary.
Couples and families should compare the combined airfare saving with the total transfer bill. Multiplying a vehicle quote by the number of passengers, or comparing it with only one person’s flight saving, gives a misleading result.
Put flights and airport transfers together in your Egypt travel budget. Then weigh the hours separately: a cheaper itinerary may still be poor value for a short break if it leaves little usable time on the first day.
Settle the payment details when booking the ride, including the currency, payment method and any waiting charge. Preparing for cash and card payments in Egypt helps you arrive with a way to pay that matches the booking.
CAI and SPX are separate airports. An itinerary that lands at one and departs from the other includes a road journey across Greater Cairo.
Read the airport code on every flight, even when the search result describes both as “Cairo.” If you are buying separate tickets, plan for collecting checked bags, entering Egypt, travelling to the second airport and checking in again unless your airline has explicitly arranged otherwise.
The gap between flights must accommodate those steps as well as delays and the next airline’s check-in deadline. A driving-time estimate alone is not enough to judge the connection.
We would favour arrival and departure at the same airport for a connecting journey. If the saving requires a CAI–SPX switch, compare it with a deliberate Cairo stopover rather than squeezing sightseeing and an airport transfer into a tight gap. Review the relevant Egypt visa requirements before booking an itinerary that requires entry into the country.
Even within CAI, use the terminal details on your booking. Keeping the same airport code simplifies the journey, but individual flights can use different terminals.
If your wider trip ends in Luxor, Aswan or a Red Sea resort, also search for a departure from that region. Where an available flight fits your dates, it may remove the need to return to Cairo solely to fly home. Compare the complete itinerary before committing to a return ticket.
Landing time can outweigh a modest fare difference. A daytime arrival with a straightforward pickup may suit a first visit better than a cheaper flight that leaves you arranging transport and accommodation in the early hours.
Before flying, send your driver the airport code, flight number and full hotel address. Agree where to meet, how delays affect the pickup and which contact method to use.
Install the useful apps for Egypt you intend to use and complete account setup before departure. Save the pickup instructions, hotel map pin and booking confirmation offline. With an unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone, a Roafly Egypt eSIM supplies mobile data for opening bookings and messaging your driver.
Your packing needs attention before either arrival: review Egypt customs rules for the medicines and electronic devices you are bringing.
Give your hotel the expected arrival time as well. If you need a room immediately after an overnight flight, confirm early access or book the preceding night.
