Budget around $700–$1,100 per person for seven days in Cairo and Luxor, excluding international flights, when two adults share a room and travel independently. Extending the trip to ten days with a three-night Nile cruise brings our example budget to approximately $1,550–$2,000 per person.

These are planning budgets built from the costs below, rather than package quotations. They assume modest private accommodation, ordinary restaurant meals, rail travel between cities and sightseeing outside major holiday periods. Private guides, domestic flights and luxury hotels require a larger allowance.
Egypt’s everyday expenses can be manageable. The bigger decisions are how far you travel, which monuments you enter and whether your cruise price already includes meals, transfers and excursions.
Start with accommodation, food and local journeys. Then add intercity transport and attraction tickets separately: a museum-heavy day costs differently from an afternoon spent walking around Cairo.
| Everyday expense | Planning allowance | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Private double or twin room | $60–$100 per room, per night | $30–$50 per person when two share |
| Food and non-alcoholic drinks | $15–$25 per person, per day | Ordinary restaurants, cafés and meals bought separately |
| Local transport | $10–$15 per person, per day | An allowance for shared taxi journeys, transfers and public transport |
These allowances underpin the trip examples later in this guide. They are spending targets, not national averages or confirmed hotel offers.
The examples use October–November 2026 conditions outside special holiday dates. Approximate conversions use $1 ≈ EGP 52.6, checked on 11 October 2026; your bank’s conversion and fees may differ.

Sharing accommodation makes a substantial difference. A $70 room costs each person $35 when two share, but a solo traveler pays the entire bill.
Direct hotel prices checked for this guide illustrate why the headline rate needs context:
Osiris Hotel Cairo: a double room advertised at $40. The room page does not clearly establish the applicable stay dates, breakfast or tax treatment.
Farida Palace, Luxor: a Deluxe Double advertised from $40 without breakfast, or $54 with breakfast, for two adults on a non-refundable plan. Taxes and fees are additional.
Marsam, Luxor: a Traditional Double advertised at €80 per night, including breakfast and taxes.
These are individual advertised examples checked on 11 October 2026, rather than available rooms guaranteed for your dates.
Our $60–$100 room allowance leaves more room above the lowest advertised prices. Compare the final amount payable, cancellation terms and included meals before deciding that one property is cheaper.
Location belongs in the same calculation. A lower room rate loses some of its advantage if your sightseeing requires extra transfers every day. Grouping nearby visits can save both transport money and time.

An allowance of $15–$25 per person per day gives you a practical starting point for ordinary meals, water and café stops. Treat hotel dining and alcohol as upgrades to that budget.
At El Haty, examples include a chicken kofta meal at EGP 204, shish tawook at EGP 238 and a mixed grill at EGP 470. Those menu prices include VAT, with a 12% service charge added for dining inside.
Grand View Cafe & Restaurant in Giza offers a useful comparison: kofta with rice and oven-baked chicken with rice are each EGP 350, with taxes and service included. Its standard breakfast is EGP 150. These menus were checked on 11 October 2026.
The practical difference is the final bill. An included service charge, an additional service charge and an optional tip are separate things; avoid automatically adding the same percentage twice.
Use the daily food allowance for meals you actually need to buy. Breakfast included in your room or meals included on a cruise should reduce that spending.
City transport and long-distance travel need separate budget lines.
Cairo Metro fares provide a low-cost reference: the published distance bands are EGP 10, 12, 15 and 20. Taxi journeys, airport transfers and trips to archaeological sites belong in a larger transport allowance. Our guide to getting around Egypt explains the practical choices.
For Cairo–Luxor, Seat61’s 2026 fare guide gives foreign-passenger reference fares of $55 each way in second-class air-conditioned Express/VIP seats and $75 in first class. Agency booking can cost more. The seven-day example therefore allows $130–$200 per person for two intercity rail journeys, rather than treating the lowest reference fare as the final booking total.
Daytime rail travel also uses a substantial part of the day. On a short trip, compare the value of that time with a domestic flight’s final price, including baggage and airport transfers.
The sleeper replaces both transport and a hotel night, but it is not automatically the cheapest choice.
Booking channel matters. Trains Egypt advertises a standard Cairo–Luxor double cabin from £240 for two, including dinner and breakfast. That is £120 per person, not £120 for the cabin.
If you choose an overnight train, remove the hotel night it replaces and adjust your meal budget. The example totals below use seated intercity rail journeys and hotel nights, so sleeper fares should replace those lines rather than simply being added.
Egypt’s sightseeing costs add up because the main entry ticket does not always cover every part of a site.
| Attraction | Foreign-adult admission reference | Budget distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Giza Plateau | EGP 700, approximately $13 | Pyramid interiors and certain tombs require separate tickets |
| Valley of the Kings | EGP 750, approximately $14 | Premium tomb admissions can add to the base visit |
| Grand Egyptian Museum, 20 October 2026 example | EGP 1,570, approximately $30 | Standard admission for “Other Nationality – Adult” |
| Grand Egyptian Museum, 10 November 2026 example | EGP 1,830, approximately $35 | The later date reflects the November price increase |
Admission references were checked on 11 October 2026. Giza and Valley of the Kings figures are the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities’ published foreign-adult rates; GEM figures are date-specific prices from its official booking system.
The GEM increase takes effect from 1 November 2026. Use the official GEM ticket booking page for your visit date, since the amount charged in Egyptian pounds can change.
Our independent Cairo–Luxor model sets aside $100–$150 per person for attraction tickets. That is a spending allowance covering the main visits and room for additional sites; it is not an all-access pass.
Choose paid extras by interest. Entering every available pyramid or premium tomb is a different budget from visiting the main archaeological areas. Guided tours should also be compared by what they include: transport, a guide and admission are not interchangeable services.
A three-night Nile cruise replaces three hotel nights and includes meals when sold on a full-board basis. Some packages also include guides, monument tickets and transfers.
Two advertised winter examples checked on 11 October 2026 show the importance of comparing inclusions:
| Three-night cruise example | Price per person sharing | Main inclusions |
|---|---|---|
| EZ Tour Egypt’s Aswan–Luxor deluxe package | $799 for a party of two to three | Cruise accommodation, onboard meals, guide, listed entrance fees and airport transfers |
| Nile Cruisen’s Nile Premium package | $829 in a double cabin | Full-board accommodation, listed excursions, entrance fees and transfers |
These are seller-specific advertised prices, subject to dates and availability. Nile Cruisen excludes Christmas, New Year and Easter from its standard seasonal rates.
Our ten-day model uses $800–$850 per person for this type of cruise package. It includes six hotel nights plus three cruise nights, and budgets separately only for meals, journeys and admission outside the package.
Full board covers meals, but drinks, tips and optional excursions may still cost extra. Abu Simbel and a Luxor balloon flight should be added only if you intend to take them.
When comparing cruise-only and excursion-inclusive offers, add the missing services to the cheaper quotation first. The useful comparison is the final cost of the same trip.
Eligible applicants pay $30 for a single-entry tourist eVisa through Egypt’s official eVisa portal. The example budgets include that amount per adult; passport eligibility and alternative entry arrangements are covered in our Egypt visa requirements guide.
Decide whether you need a local SIM, a travel eSIM or mainly Wi-Fi before choosing an allowance. Our guide to internet options in Egypt explains those differences.
Roafly’s Egypt eSIM includes a 5 GB, 30-day option at $12.90, checked on 11 October 2026. The budgets round that to $13 per person. The plan is data-only, supports hotspot use within the purchased allowance and allows top-ups.
If you want to compare allowances and providers before buying, compare Egypt eSIM prices.
Keep a separate allowance for optional tips and incidental spending. Our examples reserve $40–$70 per person for the independent week, and $80–$130 for the longer cruise trip, including onboard drinks.
These are planning reserves, not compulsory tipping tariffs. Your spending will depend on the services used and the tips you choose to give.
Bank charges also vary by card and withdrawal method. The guide to cash, cards and ATMs in Egypt covers those choices without adding an assumed universal fee to every purchase.
Both examples assume two adults sharing rooms and traveling in October or November outside special holiday dates.
The seven-day trip combines Cairo and Luxor with six hotel nights. The ten-day trip adds Aswan and a three-night cruise, with six hotel nights remaining ashore. Both include two seated intercity rail journeys.
| Budget item, per person | 7 days / 6 nights: Cairo–Luxor | 10 days / 9 nights: with Nile cruise |
|---|---|---|
| Six shared hotel nights | $180–$300 | $180–$300 |
| Three-night cruise package | — | $800–$850 |
| Meals and drinks bought separately | $105–$175 | $105–$175 |
| Local transport outside included cruise services | $70–$105 | $100–$150 |
| Two intercity rail journeys | $130–$200 | $150–$220 |
| Attraction tickets outside included cruise visits | $100–$150 | $65–$100 |
| Single-entry eVisa, if applicable | $30 | $30 |
| Mobile data, rounded | $13 | $13 |
| Tips and incidentals; onboard drinks in cruise example | $40–$70 | $80–$130 |
| Calculated total per person | $668–$1,043 | $1,523–$1,968 |
| Calculated total for two adults | $1,336–$2,086 | $3,046–$3,936 |
The hotel calculation is six nights at $30–$50 per person. The food allowance is seven days at $15–$25; in the cruise example, included onboard meals replace roughly three days’ meal spending.
These are constructed budgets using advertised examples, reference fares and stated spending allowances. They exclude international flights, insurance, shopping, private guides outside the cruise package, optional excursions and domestic flight upgrades.
Rounding upward gives practical starting budgets of $700–$1,100 per person for the week, or $1,550–$2,000 with the longer cruise itinerary.
Nilе cruise pricing commonly separates October–April from May–September, with additional holiday exceptions. For example, Nile Cruisen’s three-night Nile Premium double-cabin rate rises from $679 per person in summer to $829 in winter. The same room or cabin can therefore produce a different trip total without any change in itinerary.
Compare that saving with the conditions you want for sightseeing. Our guide to when to visit Egypt explains the regional and seasonal trade-offs.
Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh needs a different calculation. With an all-inclusive resort, some food and drink spending moves into the hotel price. Excursions, diving, transfers and excluded drinks then become the important additions.
Replacing Cairo or Luxor nights with a resort stay changes the existing budget. Adding beach nights after the cultural itinerary increases both accommodation and transport costs.
The most useful savings come from the itinerary:
Share rooms and transfers. Splitting a room changes the cost more than trimming a few café purchases.
Compare final accommodation prices. Breakfast, taxes and cancellation terms can reverse an apparent bargain.
Limit unnecessary city changes. Every extra stop can bring another fare, transfer and travel day.
Select monument extras deliberately. Pay for the interiors and tombs that interest you most.
Count included services once. Cruise meals, entrance tickets and sleeper-train nights should replace corresponding expenses.
If the pyramids and Luxor’s monuments are your priorities, the independent week provides a clearer starting budget. Add the Nile cruise when the sailing experience itself is something you want to spend more on.
