Türkiye Tourist SIM Card: Prices, Plans & Where to Buy

Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom offer local prepaid options for visitors to Türkiye. Local SIMs are worth considering if you need a Turkish number or domestic calls; a data-only travel eSIM can be simpler when your main needs are maps, messaging and browsing.

The most useful price to compare is the amount you must pay to leave the shop with a working line. An advertised data package may cover part of that purchase.

Which local operator should you consider?

Turkcell: a clearly advertised tourist offer

Turkcell's dedicated tourist package provides a straightforward reference when asking for a store quote. Its published campaign runs through December 31, 2026, subject to the operator's terms.

Keep the receipt and package confirmation so you can check that the Tourist Welcome Pack you selected was activated.

The operator name alone should not decide the purchase. If your trip includes remote accommodation or a specific hiking route, check coverage for those places before paying.

Vodafone: clarify the new-line price

Vodafone's welcome allowance is attached to eligible new prepaid activation. Its published package terms specify passport verification, 250 SMS and a non-recurring allowance.

The welcome allowance accompanies the new line, but the SIM purchase still carries a shop-dependent charge. Check whether the seller has added any optional bundle.

Vodafone's website gives inconsistent answers about how long the tourist line remains active. Get the line's expiry and extension conditions confirmed for your purchase, separately from the package expiry.

Türk Telekom: check eligibility and additional charges

Türk Telekom's Welcome range includes a smaller 10 GB package lasting seven days, so visitors are not limited to large monthly bundles.

Its terms cover eligible newly purchased prepaid lines registered with a passport or accepted ID within the previous 90 days. Customers may select Welcome package, and it does not renew automatically.

The package price excludes the new-line radio licence charge and special communication tax, collected upfront. Radio usage charges are also separate.

What should the total SIM price include?

Request itemised quote before handing over payment. It should distinguish:

• SIM or starter-line cost: the charge for obtaining the new connection.

• Selected package: the exact allowance and validity you want activated.

• Taxes and service charges: which are included and which are added.

• Required credit or additional bundles: whether these are necessary for your chosen offer.

The question to ask is simple: “What is the total I pay today to get this package working on my phone?”

Also check what happens after the allowance runs out. Additional usage and another package purchase are different costs; have the seller show you how to check your balance and buy a suitable top-up.

Airport counters

Airport buying suits visitors who want to resolve their connection before continuing to their accommodation. Allow time for the purchase and registration, and compare the offer with your actual trip length.

Operator shops in the city

Official operator shops are practical places to request a new tourist line and help with setup. Keep the operator's published package open on your phone so the staff can identify the offer you mean.

Do not budget around a fixed airport markup or assume that every city branch charges the same amount.

If you plan to buy after reaching your hotel, save the address, route and booking information offline beforehand.

Passport registration and activation: what to prepare

Bring your original passport and an unlocked phone. Vodafone also asks visitors to provide a local address, such as their hotel or hostel; keep your accommodation details available.

Registration is part of buying a local line, including a local operator's eSIM. Before visiting a shop, confirm that your phone supports the SIM format you intend to use.

Follow these steps at the counter:

1. Identify the offer. Ask for a prepaid tourist option and specify whether you need a physical SIM or local eSIM.

2. Confirm the full price. Check the package, additional charges and accepted payment method before paying.

3. Complete registration. Make sure the line is registered using your own details.

4. Check activation. Ask staff to show the package name, remaining allowance and expiry.

5. Test the connection. Turn off Wi-Fi and open a webpage using mobile data. Test a domestic call if that feature matters to you.

6. Keep the details. Save your local number, receipt and instructions for checking the balance.

Avoid planning a tightly timed journey around an assumed activation time. Finish the connection check while you still have access to the shop's assistance.

Package expiry, line expiry and the IMEI rule are different

Three separate limits can affect a local SIM purchase:

• Package validity determines how long the included data and calls remain available.

• Line validity determines how long the operator keeps the number active and what is required to retain it.

• Device registration concerns the phone's IMEI, independently of the package you buy.

Türkiye's BTK device-registration guidance states that phones brought from abroad can be used without registration for 120 days, after which unregistered devices can be blocked from communication.

Short holidays will usually fit within that period, but check your device's status if it has already been used in Türkiye or you are planning an extended stay. Do not assume a new SIM purchase starts a fresh device-registration allowance.

Ask the operator about keeping the line active before buying several months of service. Extending a data package does not resolve a separate device-registration issue.

Yes. Vodafone offers its tourist service in physical-SIM and eSIM formats through its shops. The digital format still involves local-line registration.

Does a Turkish tourist package cover Northern Cyprus or another country?

Check the exact package's roaming terms before crossing a border. Türk Telekom's Welcome allowances explicitly exclude Northern Cyprus and overseas use. Plan a separate connection if your next destination is outside the package's coverage.
