Santo Domingo–Las Américas (SDQ) suits the capital, Boca Chica and Juan Dolio. La Romana Airport (LRM) is closest to Casa de Campo and the Bayahibe resort area, provided the flight works for your dates.
The choice becomes more interesting around Bayahibe and La Romana, where all three airports can serve the same holiday. Saving money on the flight may justify a longer transfer. Equally, adding a lengthy flight connection to reach the closest airport can make the entire journey worse.
| Airport | Strongest geographic fit | Main trade-off | Worth choosing when… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Punta Cana International (PUJ) | Punta Cana, Cap Cana, Bávaro and the surrounding resort coast | Bayahibe and La Romana require an onward road transfer | Your hotel is on the Punta Cana coast, or the flight offers a better journey to a southeast-coast resort |
| Las Américas International (SDQ) | Santo Domingo, Boca Chica and Juan Dolio | Reaching Punta Cana adds a substantial road journey | You are visiting the capital, combining city and beach stays, or the flight saving covers the extra transfer |
| La Romana International (LRM) | Casa de Campo, La Romana, Bayahibe and Dominicus | The flight must fit your departure point and travel dates | A convenient itinerary brings you close to your southeast-coast hotel |
Airport identities and destination areas follow the official Dominican Republic airport guide. Your hotel’s exact address determines the final transfer.
“Dominican Republic” is too broad a destination to use when comparing airport convenience. Even “Punta Cana” covers several resort areas with different road journeys from the terminal.
Locate the hotel entrance, then compare airports against that point. Cap Cana, Bávaro and Uvero Alto should not receive one identical transfer estimate. Likewise, Casa de Campo, La Romana city, Bayahibe and Dominicus are distinct destinations.
Hotel names can also make the geography less obvious. Use the actual address rather than assuming every property marketed with “La Romana” in its name is beside La Romana Airport.
Still deciding between a city stay and a beach resort? Settle where to stay in the Dominican Republic before committing to flights. Changing the accommodation area can matter more than a modest airfare difference.
Puerto Plata and Samaná need their own airport comparison. They sit outside the southeast-coast decision covered here, so a cheap flight to PUJ should not automatically become the starting point for those trips.
PUJ makes geographic sense for a holiday based in Punta Cana, Cap Cana or Bávaro. It also serves the resort areas farther north along that coast, including Macao and Uvero Alto.
Within this group, the important distinction is the hotel location and transfer arrangement. Compare a direct private transfer with a shared service using its actual drop-off pattern. Time spent waiting for other passengers or visiting additional hotels belongs in the journey calculation.
PUJ is also a serious alternative for Bayahibe and La Romana. If you can fly directly into Punta Cana but reaching LRM requires a long connection, the extra road journey may still leave you at the hotel earlier.
The return matters just as much. Compare the time you would need to leave the resort, rather than looking only at the scheduled departure from each airport.
Anyone planning to buy mobile service after landing can review the SIM options at Punta Cana Airport before deciding how much to arrange in advance.
LRM deserves the first look for Casa de Campo, Bayahibe and Dominicus. Its location can remove a meaningful stretch of driving at both ends of the holiday.
Casa de Campo is a particularly clear example: its airport access information identifies LRM as the closest gateway while also offering access from PUJ and SDQ. The practical decision is therefore whether the shorter ground journey comes with a flight itinerary you actually want.
These estimates make the road-distance trade-off easier to understand:
| Arrival airport | Approximate drive to the Bayahibe/Dominicus area |
|---|---|
| La Romana (LRM) | About 30 minutes |
| Punta Cana (PUJ) | About 1 hour |
| Santo Domingo–Las Américas (SDQ) | About 1 hour 35 minutes |
Rounded from Transekur’s published dispatch estimates, checked on 20 October 2026. These describe driving to the Bayahibe/Dominicus area. Immigration, baggage collection, meeting the driver and shared-transfer stops add time; the hotel address, traffic and weather can also change the journey.
The table shows why LRM is attractive, but it does not settle the flight choice. An extra connection lasting several hours would outweigh the road time saved.
Keep the comparison specific to your booking: departure airport, travel dates, baggage allowance and arrival time. Smaller terminal size alone is not evidence that you will clear immigration faster.
SDQ is especially relevant if your trip includes Santo Domingo, Boca Chica or Juan Dolio. It can also work for La Romana and Bayahibe when the flight schedule or total price is stronger.
Pay attention to the distinction between Santo Domingo city and Santo Domingo Airport. Las Américas sits east of the capital. If you are heading onward to a southeast-coast resort, compare a direct airport transfer with any public-transport itinerary that first takes you into the city.
That extra connection may affect the saving you expected from using buses. The broader airport transfer and intercity transport options are useful once you have narrowed the airport choice.
SDQ needs a stronger justification for a holiday spent entirely in Punta Cana. The flight may look appealing, but both the arrival transfer and the journey back for departure must fit your plans.
Also check the airport code carefully. Las Américas is SDQ; La Isabela is JBQ. They are separate airports serving the Santo Domingo area, so “Santo Domingo” in a flight search is not enough information for arranging a pickup.
Start with the total cost of getting everyone to the hotel and back:
Flights + baggage and seat charges + return ground transport + any additional overnight stay.
If you plan to rent a car, include the relevant rental days, fuel, tolls, parking and any quoted charge for returning the vehicle to a different location. Compare equivalent arrangements: a private vehicle for your party and a shared shuttle sold per passenger are different products.
Consider this illustrative example:
Two passengers save US$75 each on their round-trip flights by using another airport.
Their combined airfare saving is US$150.
The alternative airport adds US$120 to the return transfer cost.
The remaining saving is US$30 for the whole trip.
These figures are an example, not current flight or transfer prices.
That US$30 may be worthwhile if the flight times are better. It becomes less attractive if it also buys several extra hours of travelling. Calculate the money first, then decide what the additional time is worth to you.
Keep the flight comparison consistent. The same dates, number of travellers, baggage and cabin are essential; a lower headline fare can disappear once you add what the booking needs. Broader Dominican Republic trip costs can help put a small airport saving into the context of the full holiday.
Before paying for a transfer, get the price for your complete party and luggage, identify whether it covers one way or both directions, and establish the payment currency. Our guide to paying in pesos or US dollars covers the wider cash-and-card decision.
Landing at 2 p.m. and landing late in the evening can produce very different first days, even when the airfare and driving distance are similar.
With a late arrival, a longer transfer leaves less room for baggage delays, finding the pickup point or collecting a rental car. Arrange the meeting instructions and establish how the transfer provider handles a delayed flight before departure.
Save the driver’s contact details and your hotel’s map pin. On a compatible, unlocked phone, a Dominican Republic eSIM from Roafly provides mobile data for opening the address and messaging the driver when a connection is available.
Early departures deserve the same attention. Work backwards from the airline’s required airport arrival time, then add the ground journey and your chosen allowance for delays. A cheaper flight from a more distant airport may mean leaving the resort during the night or paying for a final night closer to the terminal.
If you are collecting a rental car, include the desk’s opening hours and after-hours arrangements in that calculation. The aircraft’s landing time is only one part of the handover.
A trip combining Santo Domingo with the southeast coast does not necessarily need to return to its starting airport.
You could arrive at SDQ, spend time in the capital, continue to Bayahibe or Punta Cana, then depart from LRM or PUJ if the flights fit. Reversing the route may work equally well.
Compare a multi-city flight booking against the return fare plus the cost of travelling back to the original airport. This is especially useful when the final hotel would otherwise leave you facing a long transfer solely to catch the flight home.
Rental cars add another variable. Obtain the price for the actual pickup and return locations before assuming that a one-way rental is included at the same rate.
With a single-resort stay, arriving and departing through the same airport will often be simpler to organise. The benefit of using two airports is strongest when it follows the direction of a trip you already intend to take.
Once the flight and hotel are settled, keep the remaining preparation focused:
Review the paperwork. Use the Dominican Republic entry requirements guide for passport, visa and e-ticket preparation.
Save the exact pickup information. Keep the airport code, flight number, terminal instructions, hotel address and transfer contact together, with an offline copy.
Set up the apps you will use. The Dominican Republic travel apps guide covers tools for transport, maps and other practical needs.
Arrange mobile data around your arrival plan. If you want to prepare it before departure, compare Dominican Republic eSIM options and check your phone’s compatibility.
Send the transfer company your final flight details after booking, including any later schedule changes. The airport code and hotel address should match the reservation exactly.
