Muscat Airport has telecom counters in its arrivals hall, so you can arrange a local line before leaving for your hotel. The main choice is whether you need an Omani phone number or just mobile data.

Yes, you can buy a SIM card at Muscat International Airport: Omantel, Ooredoo and Renna Mobile have arrivals-hall sales points. Buy locally if you need a number and calling allowance; prepare a Roafly eSIM before departure if mobile data is enough and you want to skip the counter visit.
| Option | Where to arrange it | What it offers | Best reason to consider it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Omantel | Arrivals hall | Local mobile service and tourist packages | You want a local line with a tourist bundle |
| Ooredoo | Arrivals hall | Visitor SIMs with data and calling benefits | You want to compare a second tourist offer before paying |
| Renna Mobile | Arrivals hall | Prepaid data and calling packages | You want another counter quote for your stay |
| Roafly eSIM | Online before travel | Mobile data without an Omani phone number | You want to install your connection before reaching MCT |
Sales points and product information checked on 4 November 2026. Local sellers are identified in the airport’s telecom directory. Current airport price not reliably published; request the complete SIM-and-package total at the counter.
Head for the telecom counters in the arrivals hall before leaving the terminal. The directory identifies the hall rather than a numbered counter or a precise route from your baggage belt, so use terminal signs or ask airport staff for directions.
Omantel sells tourist packages and also offers tourist eSIMs online. Its tourist-line terms give the SIM a 30-day lifetime from activation, with package benefits governed by the bundle you purchase.
That distinction matters on a longer holiday: the line can remain valid after its included data has expired. Ask for the package’s end date, especially if you are staying beyond a week or two.
Ooredoo’s Tourist plans combine mobile data with calling and SMS benefits, including eligible international destinations. If calls home are part of your buying decision, have the destination country checked against the selected package.
The tourist shop offers physical SIM and eSIM formats. Tell the salesperson which your phone accepts before registration; an eSIM-only handset needs the digital version.
Renna’s arrivals-hall sales centre provides another place to compare prepaid data and calling packages. Ask for an offer covering your actual departure date, including the SIM itself, rather than comparing a recharge amount with another seller’s complete starter package.
Bring your original passport and an unlocked phone. Omantel requires a valid passport for its outlet purchase route. Ooredoo requires the original passport from visitors outside the GCC and accepts an original national ID or passport from GCC nationals.
Ooredoo’s Tourist plans are for visitors and business travellers; they are not available to Omani nationals or Omani resident-card holders.
Before paying, settle four details:
The complete amount in Omani rials: include the SIM or eSIM, selected bundle, VAT and any separately charged setup service.
The package expiry: distinguish the data-and-calls allowance from the lifetime of the line.
The accepted payment method: ask whether that counter accepts your card or requires cash before starting registration.
The working connection: ask staff to help activate it, then switch off Wi-Fi and load a webpage. Test an ordinary call if you purchased calling benefits.
Tax presentation differs between operators. Omantel’s tourist-plan terms include 5% VAT, while Ooredoo’s terms apply 5% VAT to plans with SIM activation. Compare final totals on the same basis.
Keep the receipt and the details of your new number. If a connection problem appears after leaving the airport, those details make it easier to identify the purchase and explain the issue.
Buying at the airport saves a separate store visit and lets you leave with the connection already tested. That is useful if you need to contact your accommodation, coordinate a pickup or start navigating after arrival.
Omantel outlets and partners, and Ooredoo stores elsewhere in Oman, also sell tourist service. Waiting can make sense if your transfer is arranged and you prefer to compare packages later. It should be a deliberate convenience or package choice, rather than an assumption that a city shop will always be cheaper.
Compare the same allowance, validity, calling benefits and SIM format. Our guide to Oman SIM cards for tourists covers the wider local purchase options without limiting the decision to MCT.
Roafly’s Oman eSIM plans let you arrange mobile data before travel and keep your physical SIM in place on a compatible phone. The service is data-only: it does not provide an Omani number or a local calling allowance.
This suits a trip built around maps, online bookings and messaging. If you expect to make regular conventional calls to hotels, rental desks or local contacts, the calling benefits of a local tourist SIM deserve more weight.
Published Roafly options checked on 4 November 2026 include 1 GB for 7 days at $5.50, 5 GB for 30 days at $14.90, and 10 GB for 30 days at $22.00. Hotspot use comes from the purchased allowance, and top-ups are supported.

Install the eSIM over a reliable internet connection before leaving home, following the instructions supplied with your order. On arrival, select it for mobile data and apply its roaming settings. Keep data roaming disabled on your home line unless you intend to use your home operator’s roaming service.

Muscat Airport offers free Wi-Fi at departure gates and in duty-free areas. Its Wi-Fi access instructions distinguish between local and international phone numbers:
Omani number: select “Free WiFi”, enter the number and receive the login password by SMS.
International number: present your boarding pass and passport at a flight information desk opposite the duty-free area to obtain a password.
The published instructions describe two-hour access sessions, with access available again by logging in. They specifically cover the departure-side service; on arrival, ask an information desk for the available connection method.
Save your hotel address, pickup details and any eSIM installation instructions before flying. That gives you the essentials while you arrange mobile service or airport Wi-Fi.
Are the SIM counters open all night?
Individual counter hours are not reliably published in the airport’s telecom directory. If you need data immediately after a late-night landing, install an eSIM beforehand or arrange a suitable roaming option with your home operator.
Do I need a local SIM for a short connection at MCT?
If you are staying inside the airport and only need occasional internet access, airport Wi-Fi may cover the stop. The SIM counters described here are in arrivals; passengers remaining airside should not plan their connection around a visit to those counters.
Will the same tourist allowance work in the UAE?
Omantel and Ooredoo’s tourist allowances are for use in Oman and do not include roaming. If your trip continues into the UAE, arrange coverage for that part of the journey separately.
