Lao Telecom’s Jai Dee tourist SIM is a practical starting point if you want mobile data and domestic calls in one package. Unitel and ETL offer other local options, while Roafly suits visitors who want to arrange their travel data before departure. The main purchase decision is whether you need a local calling service or simply internet access on an eSIM-compatible phone.
Start with the package’s validity as well as its data allowance. Plenty of unused data is little help if your bundle expires halfway through the trip.
| Option | Data | Validity | Listed price | Calls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lao Telecom Jai Dee | 10 GB | 5 days | 80,000 LAK | 10 domestic minutes |
| Lao Telecom Jai Dee | 15 GB | 15 days | 95,000 LAK | 15 domestic minutes |
| Lao Telecom Jai Dee | 30 GB | 30 days | 125,000 LAK | 30 domestic minutes |
| Roafly eSIM | 5 GB | 30 days | $14.90 USD | Data only |
| Roafly eSIM | 10 GB | 30 days | $22.90 USD | Data only |
Prices checked on 28 September 2026. Lao Telecom figures are the advertised Jai Dee tourist SIM package prices; Roafly figures are standard prices. Prices and terms may change.
Ask for the complete amount payable before buying a local SIM. The advertised package price does not establish whether a particular seller adds a SIM, activation or service charge. Get any such charge separated from the data package on your quote or receipt.
Regular prepaid products need a different calculation. Lao Telecom’s M-Phone new-number price is 60,000 LAK, while its separate Net SIM product is listed at 10,000 LAK. These are different starter products; neither figure should simply be added to a Jai Dee tourist bundle.
Likewise, a low price for a data recharge assumes you already have the appropriate registered line. Comparing that recharge alone with a complete tourist SIM purchase can make the saving look larger than it is.
Jai Dee makes the initial decision relatively simple: select a validity period that covers your stay, then judge whether the included data and domestic minutes are enough.
The shortest bundle would leave a week-long visitor needing another package before departure. Moving up to a longer-validity option can therefore be more useful than choosing the lowest initial price.
The included minutes also matter if you expect to call accommodation or transport providers directly. Internet calls through messaging apps and ordinary calls to a telephone number use different services; having mobile data alone does not provide a domestic call allowance.
Unitel offers physical SIM and eSIM options. Its SIM registration process provides for online identity verification with an ID document or passport and a photograph, or document submission at a shop.
That makes Unitel relevant both to visitors with a SIM tray and to those seeking a local operator’s eSIM. The digital format still involves opening and registering a local line.
At the counter, explain whether you need ordinary calls and SMS as well as data. Have the seller identify the exact product and its expiry date, especially if the offer involves a regular prepaid SIM with a separately activated bundle.
ETL provides prepaid service, with data bundles managed separately from the line’s balance. It is an option to compare when an ETL outlet can help you select and activate a package for your stay.
Keep the purchase focused on a prepaid product available to you as a visitor. ETL has several package families, including business-oriented offers, so a low headline price elsewhere in its range is not sufficient reason to choose it.
Lao Telecom’s tourist SIM service has documented buying points for both air arrivals and visitors entering overland. Useful locations include:
Wattay International Airport, Vientiane: listed by Lao Telecom as Wat Tai Airport Customer Services.
Lao–Thai Friendship Bridge near Vientiane: a customer service point for the overland arrival route.
Vientiane city: Saylom and Num Phu customer service locations.
Luang Prabang: customer service locations in Naviengkham and HuaXieng.
The bridge listing refers to the named Vientiane-area service point; it should not be taken as evidence of a telecom counter at every international crossing.
Buying at your arrival point saves a separate stop in town. Visiting a city service centre can be useful if you need help choosing between a tourist bundle, a regular prepaid line and a local eSIM.
There is no basis for assuming every airport offer costs more than its city equivalent. Compare the actual package, validity and complete purchase price.
Opening hours and available stock can affect the arrival option. If you land late or have an immediate transfer, save your accommodation address and onward instructions offline before travelling.
Bring your passport and a carrier-unlocked phone. Your handset also needs a suitable physical SIM slot or eSIM support, depending on the product you intend to buy.
Local registration can involve photographs and an address field. ETL’s identity-registration process, for example, includes a SIM-card image, a photograph of the applicant with a passport or citizen card, and a registration address. Confirmation follows by SMS after review by ETL staff.
Ask the outlet to complete the process with you:
Identify the product. Establish whether you are buying a tourist bundle, a regular prepaid line or a data-focused SIM.
Complete registration. Provide the required documents and let staff explain any photograph or address requirements.
Activate the selected package. Adding credit and subscribing to a data bundle are separate steps on regular prepaid services.
Test mobile data. Turn off Wi-Fi and open a webpage before leaving. Test ordinary calling too if that service matters to you.
Keep the account details. Save your local number, package expiry, receipt and the method for checking your allowance.
Avoid treating a successful top-up as proof that a new data package is active. Check the confirmation message or allowance screen so that you know what you have purchased.
Useful balance checks for the prepaid services covered here are:
Lao Telecom M-Phone: dial *122*# for credit and *123*# for data.
ETL prepaid: dial *122# for credit and *126# for data and bonus balances.
Keep the instructions supplied with your particular SIM. Before purchasing another bundle, distinguish the remaining account credit, remaining data and package expiry; each answers a different question.
Local SIMs are particularly useful when you want a Lao calling service, a larger domestic allowance or a connection for a phone without eSIM support. Roafly is a practical alternative when your priority is arranging mobile data before the trip.
With a Laos eSIM, you can complete installation before departure and avoid a physical SIM swap. Roafly’s listed local networks for these plans are Lao Telecom and ETL.
The packages provide data without a local telephone number or ordinary calls and SMS. You can continue communicating through internet-based apps, share the purchased allowance through hotspot and buy a top-up when needed.
Your phone must be carrier-unlocked and eSIM-compatible. Follow the installation instructions for your plan, and keep your home line’s roaming settings under control if you leave it enabled for calls or messages.

The value of Roafly here is advance setup and a clear travel-data allowance. If your main requirement is domestic calling, the local tourist bundles above serve that need more directly.
You can also compare eSIM options for Laos if you have decided on the digital route and want a broader plan comparison.
Match your connection to the places you will visit. Before a stay outside the main towns, ask your accommodation about reception at the property and along any planned excursions. Download maps and booking details so that a temporary signal gap does not interrupt the journey.
Treat onward travel as a separate coverage decision. A domestic Laos allowance should not be assumed to include Thailand, Vietnam or Cambodia; local operators’ international roaming services have separate conditions.
Roafly’s country plans discussed here cover Laos. Arrange suitable coverage for your next destination before crossing the border.
You want data and domestic calls together: start with Lao Telecom’s Jai Dee tourist bundles and select a validity period covering your entire stay.
You want a different local operator: compare a Unitel or ETL prepaid offer using its complete purchase cost, registration process and included services.
You want to prepare your data connection before departure: Roafly suits an unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone when you do not need a local number.
You are still deciding whether to buy mobile data: weigh the broader internet options in Laos, including Wi-Fi and home-network roaming.
The most useful comparison is the complete connection you will use throughout the trip: the right validity, the services you need and a purchase process that fits your arrival.
Roafly publishes this guide and offers the travel eSIM discussed above.
