Yes, you can buy a tourist SIM at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, including KLIA Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Buying on arrival makes sense if you need a Malaysian number or a large local data allowance; preparing an eSIM beforehand is more convenient if you mainly need internet and want to leave without visiting a shop.
Check your arrival terminal before saving a shop location. KLIA Terminal 1 and Terminal 2—still widely called klia2—belong to the same airport, but their retail areas are separate.
| Seller | Terminal | Where to look | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maxis / Hotlink | Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 | Maxis Centres serving both terminals | Physical Travel SIM availability is confirmed by Hotlink |
| CelcomDigi | Terminal 1 | Arrival Hall, Level 3, Main Terminal Building; another listed location is before immigration | You have an arrival-hall option as well as a pre-immigration location |
| CelcomDigi | Terminal 2 | Arrival Level Public Concourse | Public-area option after completing international arrival formalities |
| Digi Store Express | Terminal 2 | gateway@klia2, Level 2, lot L2-140 | Separately listed shop with published hours of 5 a.m.–2 a.m. |
Locations and published hours checked on 22 October 2026 against operator and gateway@klia2 listings. The Digi Store Express hours apply to that specific shop, not every CelcomDigi counter.
Hotlink confirms physical Travel SIM sales at its Maxis Centres in both terminals. Its tourist packages combine mobile data with domestic calls, making them worth considering if you want a local line rather than internet alone.
Exact current unit details and branch hours are not reliably published in the official Travel SIM information. Use the information desk or terminal directory to locate the Maxis outlet in your arrival terminal rather than following directions intended for the other terminal.
Terminal 1 has a CelcomDigi location before immigration and another in the Level 3 arrival hall. Missing the earlier counter therefore does not remove your opportunity to buy a SIM later in the arrival process.
At Terminal 2, CelcomDigi lists its store in the arrival-level public concourse. The separate Digi Store Express listing at gateway@klia2 gives you a specific alternative to locate on the shopping-centre map.
Before reaching the public concourse on an international arrival, complete the necessary arrival formalities. Our guide to Malaysia’s airport customs rules covers the luggage and declaration questions separately.
gateway@klia2 also lists Tune Talk at L2-119A, U Mobile at L2-74 and YES at L2-138. These are additional places to ask about prepaid service, but a shop listing alone does not establish which tourist package is currently in stock or its complete purchase price.
Use the operator’s published new-customer package price as your starting point, then establish the complete amount payable at the counter. An internet pass for an existing line can cost less than buying a new SIM with that pass included.
Hotlink provides a useful published reference:
| Hotlink Travel SIM | Validity | High-speed allowance before fair-use limits | Published package price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7-day package | 7 days | 40 GB | RM25 |
| 15-day package | 15 days | 100 GB | RM35 |
| 30-day package | 30 days | 400 GB | RM64 |
Hotlink package details checked on 22 October 2026. Its July 2026 announcement identifies these prices as inclusive of the 6% SST applicable to non-Malaysians. These are advertised package prices, not a verified quotation from every airport counter; any separate dealer or service charge must be established before payment.
The packages include hotspot and domestic calls, with data usable in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia under their terms. “Unlimited” marketing still comes with the fair-use allowances shown above.
CelcomDigi’s current Tourist SIM tariff includes a 14-day pass at RM35 and a 30-day pass at RM60. Its seven-day pass is listed at a promotional RM18, compared with a normal RM25, but that promotion should not be treated as a guaranteed airport offer.
Its product information also contains an RM5 SIM activation-fee note. Ask whether that amount is already included in the quote. Current airport price not reliably published applies where the branch’s full SIM, pass, activation and tax total cannot be established.
The useful question at the counter is: “What is the total for a new SIM with this package, including activation and tax?” Have the package name and expiry date shown alongside that total.
Bring your original valid passport and an unlocked phone. CelcomDigi requires the original passport for foreign-customer registration; buying an eSIM from a Malaysian operator can also involve identity verification.
Keep your accommodation address available in case it is requested during registration. If your phone has no physical SIM slot, establish whether the exact package can be issued as an eSIM before paying.
Use this short buying sequence:
Select the package and agree on the complete price.
Complete registration in your own name.
Ask staff to help install or activate the SIM if needed.
Turn off Wi-Fi and open a webpage to test mobile data.
Save the receipt, Malaysian number and package expiry details.
Payment methods are not consistently published for individual airport counters. Establish whether your card is accepted before registration begins, and keep a backup payment method available.
If you retain your home SIM for messages, select the new line for mobile data and review your home operator’s roaming settings. Keeping the home line active does not make its calls or data free.
Do not assume every SIM shop operates around the clock.
Digi Store Express at gateway@klia2 publishes hours of 5 a.m.–2 a.m. Other airport outlets may have different schedules, but current official hours are not reliably published for every branch.
An overnight arrival is a strong reason to prepare your connection beforehand. If you prefer a physical SIM, have your hotel address and onward transport details saved offline so a closed counter does not hold up your departure.
Passengers staying airside should also distinguish between a shop before immigration and a publicly accessible arrivals shop. Your transfer route may not take you past the counters listed here.
Waiting makes sense when you already have working data and want to discuss a longer stay, a different prepaid plan or ongoing account support.
Hotlink’s Travel SIM is also available at city locations including NU Sentral and KLCC. CelcomDigi lists stores at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur and Suria KLCC, giving you alternatives after reaching the city.
There is no verified universal saving simply from leaving the airport. Compare the same package, validity and complete purchase total. Buying a different city plan for less money is a different comparison from finding the identical airport package cheaper.
Our guide to buying a tourist SIM in Malaysia covers local plans and purchasing options beyond KUL.
Roafly’s Malaysia eSIM lets you prepare mobile data before travelling, without depending on airport stock, counter hours or a physical SIM swap.
Malaysia plans offer access to Maxis and CelcomDigi, with 4G/5G availability depending on your device, location and network conditions. Hotspot uses your purchased allowance without a separate hotspot quota, and top-ups are supported.
Install the eSIM while you have a reliable internet connection before departure. Your phone must be unlocked and eSIM-compatible; the plan’s validity starts when it first connects to a supported network in Malaysia.
Roafly provides data only, without a Malaysian phone number or standard calls and SMS. That makes it practical for maps, messaging, bookings and browsing. A local tourist SIM may suit you better if you need domestic calls or a much larger data allowance.

KUL’s free airport Wi-Fi can help with a quick message, checking a booking or arranging your next step. Follow the airport’s displayed connection instructions and complete any sign-in page that appears.
Treat Wi-Fi as a temporary connection while inside the terminal. Save your hotel address and booking details before moving toward your pickup point, and test your mobile data before leaving the retail area.
If you are weighing hotel Wi-Fi, roaming or a portable hotspot for the rest of your trip, compare the wider internet options in Malaysia.
Need a Malaysian number and plenty of data? Start with the local tourist SIM counters in your arrival terminal. Compare the complete new-SIM price and the package’s fair-use conditions.
Want to leave the airport without visiting a shop? Prepare your Roafly eSIM before flying, then select it for mobile data when you arrive.
Already connected and staying longer? You can continue into Kuala Lumpur and discuss local prepaid options at a city store.
Only transferring through KUL? Base the decision on whether you are entering Malaysia and actually need mobile data beyond the terminal. A landside shop is not a useful purchasing plan if your connection keeps you airside.
