Keeping maps, bookings and messages available throughout your stay takes a little more planning. Roafly eSIM suits a compatible, unlocked phone when you need mobile data; a local tourist SIM suits visitors who also want a UAE number. First, check whether your home plan already includes UAE roaming.
| Option | Best suited to | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Airport SIM | Getting a local line with help after landing | Registration and a possible wait at the counter |
| SIM bought in Dubai | Buying near your hotel or during a shopping stop | You need another connection until you reach the store |
| Roafly eSIM | Arranging mobile data before departure | Requires an unlocked, eSIM-compatible device; no local number |
| Free Wi-Fi | Airport transit, hotel use and occasional browsing | Access depends on your location and the network’s login process |
| Pocket Wi-Fi | Sharing a connection across several devices | Another device to carry, charge and arrange delivery or return for |
| Home-network roaming | Using an existing UAE-inclusive allowance | Cost and limits depend on your home plan |

Dubai International Airport (DXB) has e& and du outlets, with locations in Terminal 1 arrivals, Terminal 3 arrivals and Terminal 2’s main terminal. Buying after landing is useful if your phone takes a physical SIM or you want staff assistance setting up a local line.
Dubai World Central, also called Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), has a du shop in the arrivals area. This gives visitors arriving at Dubai’s other airport a local purchase and activation route too.
du also offers complimentary tourist SIMs through immigration counters. Treat any welcome allowance as a starting connection: establish its expiry and the cost of continuing before relying on it for your whole holiday. The free physical SIM and promotional tourist eSIM offers can have different terms.
At the counter, explain whether you need data only or regular calls as well. Have your passport and UAE visa or entry documentation ready, and test the connection before leaving.
The guide to SIM cards at Dubai Airport covers DXB’s stores and package choices in more detail. While preparing your arrival documents, review the Dubai airport customs rules if you are carrying medicines or restricted items.

Buying in the city makes sense if you already have connectivity for the journey from the airport. You can visit an operator shop near your accommodation or combine the purchase with a planned shopping stop.
Downtown visitors have a concrete starting point at Dubai Mall’s e& store on the Lower Ground Floor. e& sells its Visitor Line through its business centres, outlets and partners, with a valid passport and visa required. Ask for the visitor plan that matches your stay rather than assuming a resident subscription is available to you.
e& and du both offer tourist mobile services. Their local lines can be useful when you want a UAE number for ordinary calls or SMS, alongside mobile data. Compare the included minutes, data allowance and bundle validity against your actual needs.
Airport and city purchases are different ways of obtaining local mobile service. Neither location is automatically cheaper; the package and total amount payable matter more than where the counter sits.
Compare Dubai tourist SIM cards for the detailed operator options, prices and registration guidance.
Roafly’s UAE eSIM lets you arrange prepaid mobile data without visiting a SIM shop. It connects through du, with 4G/5G where available, and covers the UAE destination, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
The service is data-only, with no local phone number or regular calling allowance. Top-ups are supported, and you can share the connection through your phone’s hotspot using your purchased data allowance. There is no separate hotspot quota.
Before buying, confirm that your exact phone model supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. Install the eSIM while you have a reliable internet connection. In the UAE, select the Roafly line for mobile data and enable data roaming on that line, following the supplied setup instructions. Keep data roaming disabled on your home line if you are avoiding its roaming charges.
Select a package with enough validity for your trip, then choose the allowance around your use of maps, social media, streaming and hotspot sharing.

If you are still deciding between providers, compare eSIMs for Dubai for the differences in plans, networks and features.
DXB and DWC provide free airport Wi-Fi. It can be enough for an airport-only connection or for retrieving your hotel details before leaving the terminal.
Many Dubai hotels and shopping malls also provide complimentary access. Dubai Mall, for example, offers free Wi-Fi. If your plans revolve around your accommodation and a few organised outings, these connections may cover much of your browsing.
Public Wi-Fi requires more thought. du’s WiFi UAE service uses a mobile number and SMS verification through its login process. Its published instructions differ on support for international numbers, so use the options presented at the hotspot rather than assuming your foreign number will be accepted. A data-only eSIM cannot receive the verification SMS itself.
Mobile data becomes more useful between these locations: finding a pickup point, checking a route or contacting your accommodation while outside. Save your hotel address, booking details and useful maps offline so you can still reach them during a connection gap.
Pocket Wi-Fi provides a connection through a separate portable router. TravelWifi’s Global Rental Plan includes UAE coverage, making it an option to investigate for several devices travelling together.
The practical question is how you will receive and return the router. Arrange those details before departure; destination coverage alone does not establish an airport collection service. Include delivery, return and any deposit in the total rental cost.
Everyone sharing the router needs to stay within its Wi-Fi range, and the device needs charging. If you only want to connect a laptop occasionally, using your phone’s hotspot may be simpler. Separate mobile connections are more flexible when members of your group split up.
Your home operator may already include a usable UAE allowance. If it covers the length of your stay and the amount of data you need, keeping that connection can be the easiest option.
Otherwise, compare the total trip cost of a roaming pass with a prepaid SIM or eSIM. Look at:
Whether the UAE is included in the selected pass.
How many days you will be charged for.
The data allowance and what happens after it runs out.
Whether calls and SMS are included or charged separately.
Keeping your home number available for messages does not require using it as your mobile-data line. On a compatible dual-SIM phone, you can keep that number active while assigning data to your travel eSIM. Any calls or other chargeable use of the home line still follows your operator’s roaming terms.
WhatsApp messages and calls in Dubai behave differently. Messaging generally works, while voice and video calls are restricted on local networks. Successfully sending a message therefore does not establish that a live call will connect.
The UAE regulates internet voice and video calling. Arrange calls through a licensed service or an application on the TDRA-approved list, and make sure the person you are calling has access to the same service.
These application restrictions are a separate issue from using an eSIM in the UAE. Neither changing SIM format nor buying a larger data package establishes that WhatsApp calling will be available. If ordinary phone calls are important during your stay, include them in your choice of local SIM or home-network roaming plan.
