Landing at El Salvador International Airport (SAL) puts your first connection to work quickly: messaging your driver, finding your accommodation or checking the journey to the coast. Here is how to prepare your data, assess a SIM offer and decide whether to buy locally after arrival.

SIM sellers are reported around SAL, but a currently operating counter accessible to arriving passengers could not be reliably verified. Arrange your first connection before flying if you need data for pickup; plan a staffed operator-store visit if a Salvadoran phone number is the priority.
Treat buying at SAL as an option to investigate on arrival. Online listings disagree about which operators sell there, and an airport-area shop address does not establish that you can reach it from the arrivals hall.
| Option | Where you arrange it | Main advantage | What affects the decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physical SIM at SAL | Ask airport staff about a current seller accessible to arrivals | Potentially finish setup before leaving | Seller access, stock, registration and opening hours need confirmation |
| Local operator SIM after arrival | Staffed store in the city | Discuss a local number, calls and data with staff | Requires a separate stop and successful registration |
| Roafly travel eSIM | Online before departure | Prepare mobile data without a shop visit or physical SIM swap | Requires an unlocked, eSIM-compatible device; no local number |
| Your existing mobile plan | With your home operator before departure | Keep using your existing line | El Salvador inclusion, allowance and charges depend on your plan |
Checked 28 September 2026. Current airport price not reliably published. Hours not reliably published. National prepaid offers are not confirmed SAL airport purchase totals.
SAL’s new arrivals terminal was already in operation by July 2026, making old shop directions particularly important to verify. The airport operates around the clock, but that does not establish round-the-clock SIM sales.
Before departure, use the airport’s official passenger-information channel to ask whether a SIM seller is currently available to arriving passengers and where it is located. CEPA’s WhatsApp number is +503 7070 8312. State your arrival time and ask whether the seller is before or after immigration and customs.
If you are still deciding between a local SIM, roaming and travel data, the wider internet options in El Salvador guide covers those choices beyond the airport.
Ask for the complete purchase total: the SIM or starter kit, selected package and any activation or seller charge. Then compare the ordinary internet allowance and validity. Data reserved for particular apps is different from data you can use for maps, browsing or any other service.
Keep these questions together at the counter:
Can this seller register and activate a new prepaid line using your passport?
How much general-purpose data is included, and when does it expire?
Does the purchase include a local number, calls or SMS?
What is the final amount, and which payment methods are accepted?
Bring your original passport and an unlocked phone. Passport acceptance must be established for the operator and sales channel you use; buying a sealed SIM alone does not complete registration. Tigo’s published self-activation instructions prominently use the Salvadoran identity document, the DUI, so a foreign visitor should establish the available registration route before purchasing a self-activation kit.
Once setup is complete, turn Wi-Fi off and load a webpage over mobile data. Keep the receipt and SIM packaging, and store your home SIM safely if you remove it. Payment methods and setup assistance at SAL remain seller-specific, so do not rely on an unverified promise of card payment or instant activation.
If you are staying in the San Salvador area and want a local line, a staffed city store gives you a concrete place to discuss registration and available prepaid packages. Claro’s current store directory includes these two locations:
Multiplaza: second level, unit C-51. Listed hours are Monday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–7 p.m.; Sunday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
Galerías: Paseo General Escalón, Centro Comercial Galerías, third level, unit 301. Listed hours are Monday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–7 p.m.; Sunday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
Claro store locations and regular hours checked 28 September 2026. Holiday hours and SIM stock can differ.
These are city-shopping alternatives, not terminal pickup points. Match the store to your accommodation and existing plans. If your first stop is El Tunco, El Zonte or another coastal destination, a trip into the capital solely to buy a SIM adds another errand to your arrival day.
Local prepaid service can make sense when you need a Salvadoran number or expect to buy several packages during a longer stay. Compare the current full purchase cost with the data and validity you need; a low advertised recharge price is only one component. Our guide to buying a local SIM in El Salvador covers operators and purchase requirements in more detail.
Roafly’s El Salvador eSIM uses Claro, with 4G where available. It provides mobile data without a local phone number or conventional calls and SMS. Hotspot use comes from your purchased allowance, and top-ups are supported.
Your device must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Install the eSIM over a reliable internet connection before leaving, then follow the setup instructions to select it for mobile data and enable its required roaming setting. Keep data roaming on your home line off unless you intend to use that operator’s roaming service.
This suits an arrival where maps, booking access and messaging matter more than obtaining a local number. You can keep using WhatsApp with your existing registered number. If you need a Salvadoran line for ordinary calls or local SMS, discuss a local operator package instead.

Trip length and device compatibility still matter when choosing travel data. To compare providers and allowances, use our El Salvador eSIM comparison.
Ask airport staff for the official Wi-Fi network and current access instructions. A current official network name, session limit and login procedure could not be reliably confirmed, so leave your essential arrival details available offline: the accommodation address, driver contact and agreed meeting point.
If you connect successfully, send your arrival message and open the booking you will need outside. Install any travel eSIM before departure where possible, so your setup does not depend on the terminal connection.
Organize your pickup before spending time looking for a SIM seller. The El Salvador transport guide helps you plan buses, ride services and other onward options. Before packing, review the El Salvador customs rules for the separate question of what you may bring into the country.
Our recommendation: prepare data before flying when your first journey depends on online coordination. If you need a local number and can fit a shop visit into your stay, use a staffed operator store and complete registration there. An accessible airport seller may save that visit, but build your arrival plan around a connection you have already arranged.
