Strict Warning: Arrival & Inspection

Landing at major Canadian hubs like Toronto Pearson (YYZ), Vancouver (YVR), Montréal-Trudeau (YUL), or Calgary (YYC) means passing through the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).

Do not underestimate the Primary Inspection Kiosks. You will scan your passport and answer digital declaration questions. If you have anything doubtful—especially food or organic items—you must declare it. The difference between a "Green Channel" exit and a "Red Channel" nightmare often comes down to a single undeclared apple or sausage.

Customs Limits & Allowances

Canada’s duty-free limits are strict. If you exceed them, you pay duties on the entire amount, not just the excess.

CRITICAL NOTE: Personal exemptions (like the CAN$800 limit) only apply if you are a returning resident absent for 48+ hours or a visitor staying for a specific duration. Family pooling of alcohol and tobacco allowances is STRICTLY PROHIBITED. You cannot combine limits to bring in a larger bottle.

Table: Personal Duty-Free Limits (Per Person, 18/19+ Years Old)

Item Limit (Per Person) Strict Notes
Alcohol (Wine) 1.5 Liters Approx. two 750ml bottles.
Alcohol (Liquor) 1.14 Liters Approx. one large 40oz bottle.
Alcohol (Beer) 8.5 Liters Approx. 24 cans (355ml each).
Cigarettes 200 units Must be stamped "Duty Paid" if Canadian resident.
Cigars 50 units
Tobacco (Loose) 200 grams
Cash / Currency CAN$10,000 Must declare if over this amount. Includes all currencies.
Personal Goods CAN$800 For gifts/souvenirs.

⚠️ WARNING: You can only claim ONE of the alcohol categories (Wine OR Liquor OR Beer). You cannot bring 1.5L of wine AND 24 beers duty-free.

The "Big Ban" Trap: Cannabis

DO NOT DO IT. This is the single biggest trap for tourists. Although cannabis is legal inside Canada, it is strictly illegal to cross the border with it.

  • Entering Canada: Bringing weed, edibles, CBD oils, or vapes with THC from any country (even legally from the USA) is a serious criminal offense.

  • Leaving Canada: You cannot take leftover cannabis home with you.

The Penalty: Immediate confiscation, heavy fines, possible arrest, and a permanent criminal record that will bar you from entering Canada (and often the USA) for life.

Banned & Restricted Items List

Canada is incredibly protective of its ecosystem. Food and plants are the most common cause of fines.

  • Fresh Fruits & Vegetables: Most are restricted or completely banned depending on origin.

  • Meat & Dairy: Fresh meat, sausages, and unpasteurized cheeses are often seized.

  • Weapons: Mace, pepper spray, and tasers are considered prohibited weapons.

  • Baby Walkers: Surprisingly, these are banned in Canada for safety reasons.

  • Firewood & Soil: Strictly prohibited to prevent invasive species.

Fines & Payment

If you fail to declare an item and are caught:

  1. Confiscation: You will lose the item immediately.

  2. Monetary Fine: Fines range from CAN$300 to CAN$1,300 for a first offense.

  3. Blacklist: You may be flagged in the CBSA system, guaranteeing you are searched every time you enter Canada for the next 7 years.

  4. Payment: Fines must be paid immediately at the airport via cash or credit card before you are released.

Instant Internet: Don't Get Stuck Offline

Airport WiFi in Canada can be spotty, and you often need internet before you exit customs to access banking apps for fine payments, translate declaration forms, or show digital return tickets.
