Sri Lanka’s tourist SIM market offers generous data packages, but the best choice depends on your trip length and whether you need local calls. SLT-Mobitel has a seven-day option and bundles with unlimited local calling, while Dialog offers monthly packages with different data allowances and call credit.
Roafly suits visitors who want to arrange mobile data before departure without visiting a SIM counter. Local operators also offer eSIMs, so the decision involves registration, calling features and buying convenience as well as the SIM format.
These selected packages cover a short visit, a longer holiday and heavier data use.
| Operator | Data | Validity | Plan charge, including tax | Calls and SMS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SLT-Mobitel | 15 GB | 7 days | LKR 821 | Unlimited local calls; 1,000 SMS to any network |
| SLT-Mobitel | 30 GB | 30 days | LKR 1,540 | Unlimited local calls; 1,000 SMS to any network |
| Dialog | 20 GB | Monthly | LKR 1,399 | LKR 174 call credit |
| Dialog | 30 GB | Monthly | LKR 1,799 | LKR 164 call credit |
| Dialog | 50 GB | Monthly | LKR 2,450 | LKR 250 call credit |
Dialog and SLT-Mobitel tourist package charges checked on 23 October 2026. Prices and conditions may change. These are package charges; the offer pages do not clearly itemize any separate SIM or activation fee, so obtain the complete payable total before purchasing.
The seven-day package makes sense only if its validity covers the part of your trip when you need it. During a two-week holiday, a larger allowance with insufficient validity can be less useful than a package that lasts until departure.
Local calling deserves equal attention. Calling a guesthouse, restaurant or driver through the mobile network uses a different allowance from contacting them through WhatsApp.
Roafly’s Sri Lanka eSIM lets you install your connection before departure and use mobile data without replacing a physical SIM.
Two practical options are:
5 GB for 30 days: $12.90
10 GB for 30 days: $19.90
Both use Hutch’s 4G network where available. Hotspot sharing uses your purchased allowance, top-ups are supported, and identity verification is not required. These are data-only plans without a Sri Lankan phone number.
Standard Roafly prices checked on 23 October 2026; prices and plan terms may change.
Roafly is useful when advance setup matters more than local calling or a large local data bundle. Your device must be unlocked and eSIM-compatible. If you are still comparing travel plans, explore the best eSIM options for Sri Lanka.

Dialog’s range gives you room to choose a package around your expected usage rather than buying the largest allowance automatically. Its included calls are expressed as monetary credit, so they should not be treated as unlimited minutes.
The highest-data package in the table also includes unlimited WhatsApp. Keep your general data allowance in mind for other activities, particularly video streaming, cloud backups and laptop use.
Think about how you will actually use the connection. Someone checking directions and messaging accommodation hosts has different requirements from someone uploading videos throughout the trip.
SLT-Mobitel’s included local calling is useful if you expect to contact businesses or accommodation by ordinary phone call. Its seven-day and 30-day packages also make the validity choice straightforward.
Mobitel offers a separate “non-stop” data package subject to a fair-use policy and conditions. Before choosing it for heavy use, obtain the applicable data threshold and any reduced-speed terms; the label alone does not establish unrestricted full-speed data.
Both operators offer tourist eSIMs as well as physical SIM options. Keeping your existing SIM in place is therefore possible with a local operator too, provided your phone supports the required combination of active lines.
Buying after arrival is practical if you want staff to handle registration and help you test the connection before continuing your journey.
The verified options include:
Bandaranaike International Airport: Dialog stores after customs in the arrivals lobby, plus SLT-Mobitel counters in the arrivals area.
Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport: SLT-Mobitel counters.
Jaffna International Airport: SLT-Mobitel counters.
Allow time for the purchase if a driver is waiting. Keep your passport accessible and decide roughly how much data you want before approaching the counter.
Dialog connections are available through its service centres and authorized retailers. SLT-Mobitel also sells prepaid connections through outlets and retailers around the country.
An official operator outlet is a sensible choice when you need help with an unfamiliar phone, eSIM installation or account registration. Ask for a tourist-eligible prepaid package rather than simply requesting the cheapest advertised plan.
Compare the same package and complete upfront charge when choosing between airport and city purchases. Buying in town should not automatically be assumed to save money.
Dialog offers online ordering, including an airport collection option. Collection requires your passport and order number.
Keep the order confirmation available offline. If the purchase involves a separate SIM order and package activation, establish which steps are complete before relying on the connection for your arrival journey.
Bring your original passport when purchasing a local tourist SIM. Registration should identify you as the user of the connection.
SLT-Mobitel’s prepaid registration process also includes a digital photograph taken at the centre, or a suitable passport-size photograph. Its tourist offer page emphasizes the foreign passport, but that should not be interpreted as a promise that no photograph will be requested.
Use this checklist at the counter:
Confirm the package. Match the data allowance, validity and calling benefits to the option you selected.
Request the complete total. Separate the package charge from any SIM, activation or other compulsory payment.
Complete registration in your own name. Review the details before signing or accepting the connection.
Check the activation and expiry dates. Make sure the validity covers the intended travel period.
Test mobile data with Wi-Fi switched off. Open a webpage or map before leaving.
Save your number and receipt. Keep the package confirmation and any account access instructions.
Your phone must be carrier-unlocked. Physical SIM users also need a suitable SIM slot; eSIM users should verify compatibility for their exact device model.
Payment arrangements can vary by purchasing channel. Establish the accepted method and final charge before starting an online order or handing over documents at a retailer.
An app-specific allowance is different from general-purpose mobile data. Background photo uploads, operating-system updates and laptop downloads can consume your main allowance even when your messaging use is modest.
Set large backups and software updates to run over Wi-Fi. Download offline maps before a long journey so that navigation is less dependent on continuous mobile reception.
Unused data and an active validity period are separate requirements. Saving data will not extend a package beyond its expiry date.
SLT-Mobitel users can check their balance through *100# or the Mobitel Selfcare app. Its tourist top-up options include 8.4 GB for 14 days at LKR 652 and 20 GB for 30 days at LKR 1,343, checked on 23 October 2026.
Before paying for a recharge, establish whether it adds general account credit, activates a data package or renews your existing offer. Keep the confirmation until the allowance appears on your account.
Compare coverage around your accommodation and planned route, especially if your itinerary extends beyond major towns. National network claims cannot establish reception inside a particular room or along every part of a journey.
Save accommodation addresses, tickets and essential contact details offline. If uninterrupted access matters for work, consider the connectivity available at your accommodation as well as your mobile package.
A visit lasting up to seven days: SLT-Mobitel’s short-validity tourist package is a useful starting point, particularly when local calls matter.
A longer holiday with regular phone calls: Compare Mobitel’s 30-day bundle with Dialog’s monthly offers, paying attention to unlimited calling versus call credit.
Higher mobile data consumption: Consider the larger fixed-data packages before choosing a fair-use-based “non-stop” offer.
Advance preparation and data-only use: Roafly provides an eSIM option you can arrange before departure.
A phone without eSIM support: Buy a physical SIM after confirming that the device is unlocked.
Sri Lanka’s local tourist packages are particularly useful when you need a local number, included calls or a substantial data allowance. Roafly fits trips where arranging data in advance is the priority. Match the package to your travel dates and calling needs, then compare the complete purchase cost.
Roafly publishes this guide and offers the travel eSIM described above.
