SIM cards are mentioned in official visitor guidance for Santiago Airport, but a specific current seller, opening hours and complete airport purchase price could not be reliably confirmed. If you need data for your transfer or have a connecting flight, prepare an eSIM or another arrival connection before departure.
Chile’s official connectivity guidance includes Santiago Airport among the places where visitors can buy a local SIM. However, it does not identify a particular counter, terminal location or package, so it is insufficient for planning a guaranteed purchase on arrival.
The practical options are:
| Option | Where you arrange it | Cost information | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airport SIM purchase | Ask airport staff for a current sales point | Current airport price not reliably published | You have spare time and can find a seller offering activation assistance |
| Local prepaid SIM | Operator branch or participating retailer in Santiago | National package prices are available; the initial purchase total depends on the offer | You want a Chilean number, local calls or a large allowance |
| Roafly eSIM | Online before departure | Chile plans start at US$4.90 for 1 GB over 7 days | You need mobile data without searching for a physical SIM |
| Airport Wi-Fi | Inside the airport | Free | You need to send an arrival message or retrieve a booking |
Information checked on 22 October 2026. Airport SIM stock, seller location, payment methods and activation charges remain unverified. Airport SIM shop hours are not reliably published.
If you want to try buying at SCL, ask the information desk: “¿Dónde puedo comprar un chip prepago y activarlo con pasaporte?” This means, “Where can I buy a prepaid SIM and activate it with a passport?”
Ask whether the suggested shop is in the public area and accessible from your arrival terminal. Buying a sealed SIM pack is only useful if you can also complete the registration and activate the package.
The useful figure is the complete amount needed to leave with working data. That may include the physical SIM, an initial recharge or package, and any separately charged assistance.
Before paying, establish:
The total price in Chilean pesos, including the SIM and any service charge.
The data allowance and its expiry date.
Whether local calls, a Chilean number or SMS are included.
Whether the seller can assist with foreign-passport activation.
Which payment methods the seller accepts.
Keep the receipt and SIM packaging. Before leaving, turn off Wi-Fi and load a webpage over mobile data so you know the service is working.
National operator prices help you assess an offer, but they do not establish what an airport retailer charges. Without a verified SCL quote, there is also no sound basis for claiming a particular airport markup.
Local prepaid service is worth considering if you need substantial data or local calling minutes and can spend time completing the purchase in the city.
One reference is Movistar Plan para Todos, with a standard package price of CLP 4,990 for 40 GB and 500 minutes over 30 days. It includes a local number for a new line, excludes SMS, and renews from prepaid credit when sufficient balance is available.
Movistar’s national offer, checked on 22 October 2026. This is a package-price reference, not a verified airport total or a guarantee of the same initial purchase price at every retailer. The advertised first-month online promotion is a separate offer.
Movistar sells prepaid chips through its branches and participating retailers. At a city shop, ask for a new prepaid line and help activating it with your passport. Avoid assuming that an online discount, delivery offer or existing-customer package applies to a walk-in purchase.
The broader guide to buying a local SIM in Chile covers operator choices and registration in more detail. Use it to decide what to buy once you have reached the city, especially if a local number matters more than immediate airport connectivity.
Foreign visitors can activate Chilean prepaid SIMs using a passport. Current activation instructions from Entel, Movistar and WOM provide a route for foreign identity documents; a Chilean RUT is not the only accepted option.
Chile’s mandatory prepaid registration rules took effect on 20 August 2026. Operators require identity verification for new prepaid lines, and registration also affects recharging existing lines.
Bring your original passport and be ready to complete a document photograph and facial verification through the operator’s activation process. Entel also requests contact and address information. Allow time for this step rather than treating the SIM as something that necessarily works as soon as you insert it.
Registering the SIM and registering your phone are different tasks. An imported handset used with a Chilean SIM generally has a 30-day operating period from its activation on the local network before it can be blocked if its IMEI has not been registered.
If you will continue using a local SIM beyond that period, arrange the separate foreign-phone registration through the operator or an authorised certification company. Keep your passport, proof of entry and IMEI details available. Completing prepaid identity verification alone does not register the handset.
Roafly’s Chile eSIM lets you prepare your mobile-data connection before departure without depending on airport stock, shop hours or a physical SIM swap.
Chile plans use WOM, with 4G/5G where available. They are data-only, support hotspot within the purchased allowance and offer top-ups. Purchase does not require identity verification, and your phone must be carrier-unlocked and eSIM-compatible.
Install over a reliable internet connection before leaving home. On arrival, select the eSIM for mobile data and enable data roaming on that line as instructed. Keep data roaming disabled on your home line if you do not intend to use its roaming service.
Roafly suits visitors who mainly need maps, messaging and bookings. It does not include a Chilean number or ordinary mobile calls and SMS; a local prepaid SIM can be better suited to those needs or a much larger allowance.

Santiago Airport has free Wi-Fi, which is useful for contacting your accommodation, retrieving transfer details or finishing an eSIM installation. Follow the airport’s displayed connection instructions and complete the login page; reconnect if the session expires.
Before leaving the terminal, save:
Your accommodation’s address and check-in instructions.
Your transfer confirmation and meeting point.
An offline map of the journey into Santiago.
Any onward flight or transport booking you need to show.
Airport Wi-Fi serves the terminal visit. Once you leave, mobile data or those saved details become your backup.
Landing late or connecting soon: Arrange your connection before flying. An uncertain SIM-shopping stop adds little value when you need to reach a meeting point or continue to another flight.
Staying in Santiago and needing a local number: Use an arrival connection for the transfer, then visit a city operator branch when you have time for passport verification and setup.
Using a phone without eSIM support: Prepare your transfer details offline and decide whether a short home-operator roaming allowance is worth the cost. Airport Wi-Fi can cover immediate messages while you arrange a physical SIM.
Visiting briefly and mainly using maps and WhatsApp: Preparing a travel eSIM is the more straightforward arrival plan. You can keep using WhatsApp with your existing registered number without buying a Chilean voice line.
The decision is whether you need working data before leaving SCL or can wait until you reach Santiago. Plan around that need, and treat an airport SIM purchase as an option to investigate on arrival rather than a confirmed service.
