Bring a payment card and some Turkish lira for Northern Cyprus. Many businesses also accept euros, British pounds and US dollars, but paying with foreign cash introduces an exchange rate that can change the final cost.
Separate everyday spending from accommodation and transfers already booked in another currency. Keep those agreed prices handy, carry a physical backup card and arrange enough cash for your first unpaid journey and small purchases.
Northern Cyprus uses the Turkish lira, written as TRY, TL or ₺. It is the same currency used in Türkiye, so lira brought from Türkiye does not need to be exchanged into a separate local currency.
British pounds, euros and US dollars are also accepted by many businesses, as outlined in the local currency guidance. Each business decides which foreign currencies it accepts and the rate it applies.
Before paying a lira-priced bill with euros or pounds, ask for the final amount and the currency of your change. You can then compare that offer with paying in lira.
This guide covers the north of the island. The Republic of Cyprus-controlled south uses the euro, so visiting both areas requires planning for two currencies.
Start with the currency you already hold and any outstanding bookings. Buying euros or pounds solely to exchange them into lira adds another conversion to your trip.
| Your situation | Practical approach |
|---|---|
| Arriving from Türkiye with Turkish lira | Bring some lira for cash purchases and review your card’s overseas-use settings and charges. |
| Arriving with euros, pounds or dollars | Compare the net lira offered by an exchange office with the total cost of withdrawing lira using your card. |
| Accommodation or transfers priced in foreign currency | Keep the booking confirmation and establish the accepted payment method and settlement currency. |
| Visiting both the north and south | Budget lira for northern cash purchases and euros for southern cash purchases. |
The best option depends on your existing money and your card’s fees. Someone with a low-fee debit card faces a different choice from someone whose bank charges for every overseas withdrawal.
Base your initial cash amount on expenses you have not prepaid: transport from the airport, food and smaller purchases. Carrying a fixed percentage of your holiday budget makes less sense when one visitor has an all-inclusive booking and another plans to pay for everything locally.

Visa and Mastercard are practical cards to bring. Local merchant networks support foreign-issued debit and credit cards, including through İktisatbank’s CardPlus POS service. Acceptance at an individual business depends on its payment setup.
Match your preparation to the purchase:
Accommodation and larger bookings: establish the payment currency, accepted card type and any separate deposit requirement.
Restaurants and shops: ask about card payment before ordering or committing to a purchase if you are relying on it.
Small purchases and local transport: keep lira available where you have not established a card-payment option.
With a taxi or private transfer, settle the fare, currency and payment method together. If the quote was in lira, “we accept euros” still leaves the conversion rate unresolved.
Keep receipts for larger payments and compare the charged amount with the agreed price. Our guide to booking and billing scams in Northern Cyprus covers the checks worth making before sending a deposit or settling an unfamiliar bill.
Ercan Airport has bank ATMs and currency-exchange services for obtaining cash on arrival. Its passenger services guide lists ATM providers including İşbank, Ziraat, Halkbank, Garanti and TEB, alongside Müsmer Exchange.
In town, look for a bank-operated ATM displaying your card network’s logo. İktisatbank’s CardPlus ATMs support cards bearing Mastercard, Maestro, Visa and Electron logos and offer an English-language menu.
Three separate costs can affect a withdrawal:
The ATM operator’s fee: a charge imposed by the machine’s operator.
Your card issuer’s charges: potentially including overseas withdrawal, foreign transaction or credit-card cash-advance fees.
Currency conversion: the rate used to convert the transaction into your account currency.
Declining the ATM’s currency conversion does not remove a separate withdrawal fee. Read both the fee and conversion screens before proceeding.
Use a debit card for planned cash withdrawals unless you have reviewed your credit card’s cash-advance terms. Credit-card withdrawals may attract fees and interest under different conditions from ordinary purchases.
Fee-free withdrawals advertised for a bank’s own customers should not be treated as a promise for every foreign card. The ATM’s displayed offer and your issuer’s terms determine your transaction cost.
You can exchange money at Ercan Airport or at exchange offices in town. Airport access is useful for immediate expenses; exchanging a smaller initial amount leaves you free to compare other offers later.
Ask: “How many lira will I receive for this amount, after all charges?”
The answer is more useful than a “zero commission” sign. An exchange business may charge no separate commission while earning money through the difference between its buying and selling rates.
If you hand over euros or pounds and receive lira, the exchange office is buying your foreign currency. Use that side of the rate board when comparing offers.
Compare the same amount at roughly the same time. Online currency converters provide a reference point, while the rate available over a counter can differ. Count your cash before leaving and retain the receipt.
Before travelling with substantial cash, review the Northern Cyprus cash and customs rules. Airport arrival requirements and controls on crossings between the island’s two sides need to be considered separately.
With a lira-priced purchase, a card terminal may offer to charge you in your home currency instead of TRY. This service is called dynamic currency conversion, or DCC.
Selecting TRY leaves any necessary conversion to your card issuer or payment network under your card’s terms. Accepting the home-currency offer uses the rate and charges presented by the merchant’s payment service.
Under Visa’s DCC guidance, the offer should show both currencies, the exchange rate and additional fees or markup. You decide whether to accept it.
Accommodation originally booked in euros needs a different comparison. Its agreed price may already be in euros before you reach the payment terminal. Converting that bill into lira could introduce another merchant exchange rate.
Use the original price as your reference:
TRY-priced purchase: request the TRY charge if you want your card provider to handle any necessary conversion.
Booking agreed in euros or pounds: establish whether you can settle the original amount directly in that currency.
Alternative currency offered at payment: compare the final amount and conversion terms before accepting.
The key is to identify the agreed price currency first, then who will perform any conversion. An unfamiliar currency on a terminal deserves a pause before you enter your PIN or approve the payment.
Bring your physical card even if you normally pay by phone. Apple Pay with an eligible card can work at compatible contactless terminals, but the terminal and card must support the transaction. Set up your wallet before departure.
Banking apps help you review charges, respond to security prompts and freeze a misplaced card. Make sure you can sign in and understand how your bank verifies unfamiliar transactions.
If verification codes arrive by SMS, keep access to the number registered with your bank and review your home operator’s roaming arrangements. App notifications and text messages use different delivery methods.
Compare internet options in Northern Cyprus when deciding between a local SIM, travel eSIM and Wi-Fi. Save essential reservation details and your bank’s contact information offline as well.
Roafly’s Northern Cyprus eSIM provides mobile data on a compatible, unlocked device for banking apps and reservation access. It is data-only and does not provide a phone number or receive SMS verification codes.
Keep a second payment card separately from your main wallet. If a payment fails, review any bank notification before repeatedly trying again, then use your backup method or contact the issuer.
Plan northern cash spending in Turkish lira and southern cash spending in euros. Acceptance of euros by some northern businesses does not make the island a single-currency destination.
Keep enough of each currency for the journeys and purchases you expect on that side. Before exchanging leftover lira, consider whether you will return north or continue to Türkiye, where you can use the same currency.
Your payment arrangements are separate from your eligibility to cross. Review the Northern Cyprus entry and crossing requirements for your route and travel documents before building an itinerary covering both sides.
