Facing the customs checkpoint after a long flight can trigger instant anxiety. Will you be pulled aside? Did you pack something illegal by mistake? Mauritius maintains strict border controls to protect its ecosystem and enforce local laws. Knowing exactly whether to walk through the Green Channel or the Red Channel is critical to avoiding delays, luggage confiscation, or severe financial penalties upon arrival.

Red Channel vs. Green Channel

Upon arriving at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) or the smaller Plaine Corail Airport (RRG) in Rodrigues, you must undergo a self-elective customs clearance process.

  • Green Channel (Nothing to Declare): Use this exclusively if your items fall entirely within the legal allowances, you carry no restricted goods, and your foreign currency is below the declaration threshold. Warning: Luggage in the Green Channel is routinely x-rayed and physically searched.

  • Red Channel (Goods to Declare): Use this if you exceed your alcohol or tobacco limits, carry commercial merchandise, possess restricted medications, or carry high-value items/cash exceeding the limit.

Customs Limits & Allowances

Mauritius has highly specific, tiered allowance options for travelers aged 18 and over. You must choose ONLY ONE of the following options (A, B, or C) for your duty-free import.

Item Limit (Per Person, 18+) Notes
Tobacco 250 grams (approx. 200 cigarettes) Applies to all options (A, B, and C).
Alcohol: Option A 1 Liter Spirits AND 2 Liters Wine/Beer Choose this if carrying both hard liquor and light alcohol.
Alcohol: Option B 2 Liters Spirits AND 0 Liters Wine/Beer Choose this for hard liquor only.
Alcohol: Option C 0 Liters Spirits AND 4 Liters Wine/Beer Choose this for wine/beer only.
Cash/Currency Up to Rs 500,000 (or foreign equivalent) Must declare if carrying exceeding amounts (approx. $11,000 USD). Includes bearer negotiable instruments.
Personal Goods Up to Rs 15,000 value (Foreign Passport) General items excluding electronics meant for personal use.

⚠️ STRICT WARNING: Family pooling is strictly prohibited. You cannot combine the allowances of multiple family members into a single suitcase. Each individual must carry their own legal limit in their own baggage.

The "Big Ban": The Trap for Tourists

The fastest way to get detained at MRU is by bringing in spearfishing equipment or unprescribed medication.

Mauritius fiercely protects its coral reefs; importing underwater fishing guns or spearguns is strictly illegal and will result in immediate confiscation and hefty fines. Furthermore, Mauritius has zero tolerance for narcotics. Over-the-counter medications in your home country that contain psychotropic substances, pseudoephedrine, or buprenorphine (Subutex) can lead to drug trafficking charges if you do not carry a certified doctor's prescription clearly matching your identity. Another surprising trap: importing cigarette rolling papers is highly restricted.

Banned & Restricted Items List

Do not attempt to bring the following items into Mauritius:

  • Illegal drugs and narcotics (Immediate imprisonment).

  • Underwater fishing guns and spearfishing gear.

  • Sugarcane cuttings, fresh plants, and soil.

  • Live or stuffed animals (without prior veterinary permits).

  • Cigarette papers.

  • Firearms and ammunition (Requires advance police permit).

  • Counterfeit goods and pirated media.

For the official list, refer to the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA)

Fines & Payment

Attempting to bypass customs via the Green Channel with undeclared, restricted, or excess items is a criminal offense.

If caught, your items will be seized immediately. You will be liable to pay standard duties, excise taxes, plus a severe penalty fine. Fines must be paid at the customs counters in the arrival hall. The MRA accepts Mauritian Rupees (cash) and major credit cards. Serious offenses, such as bringing in prohibited narcotics or commercial quantities of undeclared goods, bypass fines entirely and result in arrest, court trials, and potential deportation.

Stay Connected to Avoid Delays

Customs officers may ask you to prove your return flight, show your hotel reservation, or display a digital medical prescription. Without internet access, a simple verification check can turn into an hour-long delay in the holding area.

You need an active connection the second you step off the plane. Avoid the hassle of searching for spotty airport Wi-Fi or queuing up for local SIM cards outside the baggage claim. Purchase a Mauritius eSIM before your trip to ensure your digital documents and banking apps load instantly at the border.
