GO, Epic and Melita sell local prepaid mobile services suitable for visitors to Malta. Epic is a practical starting point for an airport purchase, while GO and Melita deserve a look if you want a large allowance or local calls; Roafly suits an unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone when you want a prepaid data package arranged before departure.
Before buying anything, check your existing plan: an EU/EEA subscription may already cover your holiday under roaming rules and fair-use limits. Our guide to internet options in Malta covers that wider choice.
Malta prepaid SIM prices at a glance
The price of a data bundle is not necessarily the amount a new customer pays at the counter. Starter credit, an introductory bundle and a standard renewal are different things.
| Local option | Data and validity | Advertised bundle price | First-purchase detail | Main reason to consider it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Epic Value Pack | 10 GB, 28 days | €10.99 | Confirm SIM, usable credit and tax treatment | Local calls plus an airport shop |
| Melita Pockit Pass L | 25 GB, 28 days | €12 | New SIM cost is not established by the bundle price | Larger allowance with local calls |
| GO Smart Unlimited | Unlimited data in Malta, 28 days | €15.99 | €10 new-SIM offer is separate; confirm its included bundle | Heavy data use within Malta |
Operator prices and terms checked on 27 September 2026. Prices may change. These are bundle charges, not guaranteed all-in totals for a new SIM; introductory offers and tax treatment are explained below.
Local bundles run for four weeks. That matters on a 30-day trip: a 28-day allowance expires before the end of your stay, and another renewal could cost more than you expected.
GO, Epic or Melita: which local plan fits?
Epic: a straightforward call-and-data option
Epic’s Value Pack combines data with 200 minutes to other local numbers, 200 local SMS and unlimited calls to Epic numbers while in Malta. It suits visitors who want to call Maltese restaurants, accommodation or activity providers as well as use maps and messaging.
New customers may encounter a €4.99 welcome price for the first six Value Pack purchases. Treat that as a promotional bundle charge: it does not establish the complete cost of obtaining and funding a new SIM.
Epic’s price page excludes excise tax, while the detailed pack terms explain tax deductions from topped-up credit. Ask for the amount you must pay to leave with the selected bundle active. Buying a pack also enables recurring renewal, which you can stop without ending the current allowance.
Melita: more data without needing an unlimited plan
Melita’s Pockit Pass L terms include 200 minutes to other local networks, 200 SMS and free calls to Melita fixed and mobile numbers in Malta. The stated bundle charge includes VAT and 4% excise tax.
Its larger allowance makes it useful for regular browsing, social media and some hotspot use. The advertised 50 GB version requires Auto Top Up; the standard allowance applies without that payment arrangement.
Pass L renews every 28 days if sufficient credit remains. New-customer promotions may reduce early bundle charges, but the ordinary bundle price alone does not establish the cost of a new physical SIM.
GO: worth considering for heavy local data use
Smart Unlimited is useful if you expect to stream or tether frequently within Malta. The standard version has no included general call or SMS allowance; Smart Unlimited+ adds 60 minutes and 60 SMS at a higher bundle price.
There is also a potentially valuable starter offer. GO’s current new-number purchase guidance describes a €10 SIM with a choice of the first 28 days of Smart Unlimited+ or €10 top-up credit.
Older starter-pack terms describe a different Smart L allocation. Have the outlet identify the offer attached to your new SIM before paying; the benefits from those two descriptions should not be combined. The standard Smart Unlimited tariff also excludes excise tax.
GO’s local eSIM option means you can obtain a Maltese mobile service without a plastic card. That is useful if your phone has no physical SIM slot or you want to keep your existing card installed.
Where to buy a SIM card in Malta
At Malta International Airport
Epic has a shop at Malta International Airport. Its current store directory gives opening hours of 09:00–21:00 daily, making it a convenient place to ask for a new prepaid SIM and setup assistance after landing.
Allow for the shop’s closing time if your flight arrives late. promotions should not be assumed to be available on identical terms at the airport counter, and an airport purchase is not automatically more expensive than a city purchase.
In Valletta, Sliema, St Julian’s and Gozo
Official operator shops are useful when you want the first purchase explained and the bundle activated before leaving. Verified Epic locations include:
-
Valletta: Republic Street.
-
Sliema: Bisazza Street and The Point shopping centre.
-
St Julian’s: Triq Santu Wistin.
-
Gozo: Arkadia Shopping Complex in Victoria/Rabat.
GO also sells new SIMs through its retail outlets and authorised resellers. Melita sells prepaid SIMs through its shops and reseller network.
Tell the seller you need a new prepaid number, rather than a port-in deal or a long-term contract. Offers for keeping an existing Maltese number are a different purchase route from arriving with a foreign SIM.
What to bring, how to activate and how to stop renewal
Bring a valid passport or accepted photo ID. Melita’s in-store registration instructions require a valid identity document, and operator procedures can differ; do not plan your purchase around finding an anonymous SIM.
You can keep the buying process simple:
-
Check your phone is unlocked. Physical SIM users also need a compatible card slot; local or travel eSIM users need eSIM support.
-
Ask for the full first payment. Have the seller separate the SIM, included credit, selected bundle and any additional charge.
-
Identify the actual allowance. Check data, local calls, validity and whether a promotion requires automatic payments.
-
Wait for activation confirmation. Using data before the bundle is assigned can consume credit at standard rates.
-
Test mobile data before leaving. Turn Wi-Fi off briefly and load a webpage.
Keep the SIM packaging and receipt until setup is complete. They make it easier to identify the number and explain what you purchased if you need support.
Automatic renewal and automatic top-up are different
Bundle renewal uses available account credit or the selected payment method to buy another allowance. Auto Top Up adds credit automatically; it may also unlock a promotional data bonus.
If you need service for the holiday, turn off the relevant repeat payment before leaving. The verified cancellation routes include:
-
Epic Value Pack: send StopValue to 16200 to stop the next purchase while keeping the current pack until expiry.
-
GO Smart Unlimited: send STOP U to 16410; Unlimited+ uses STOP P.
-
Melita Pockit: send STOP to 16852 to prevent renewal at the end of the current period.
Melita’s MyMelita opt-out can remove the bundle and unused benefits immediately, so the SMS route matters if you want to retain the remaining allowance.
When a Roafly eSIM makes more sense
Roafly is useful when you want mobile data prepared before departure and do not need a Maltese phone number. You can keep your main SIM installed and use the eSIM for maps, messaging, browsing and internet calls on a compatible device.
The selected Malta eSIM options are 10 GB for $14 and 20 GB for $22, both valid for 30 days. These are standard prices supplied by Roafly and checked for this guide on 27 September 2026; current prices may change.
Roafly’s listed networks are Vodafone and GO. Vodafone Malta rebranded as Epic, which explains why the older name can appear in plan details while local shops use Epic branding.
The country plans are data-only, support hotspot use within the purchased allowance and allow top-ups. They do not include a local number, regular calls or SMS. The prepaid purchase does not automatically renew.

Local prepaid remains worth considering if you need a Maltese number, included local calls or substantially more data. You can also compare Malta eSIM plans if you have decided against a physical SIM and want a fuller plan comparison.
Using your SIM in Gozo and on an European trip
Gozo is part of Malta, so visiting it does not normally require buying another country’s SIM. Keep offline maps available for excursions and avoid choosing a package on the assumption that any network provides uninterrupted reception everywhere.
An trip to another country needs a separate allowance check:
-
Epic Value Pack: includes data use in its applicable Roam Like at Home zone, subject to the plan’s roaming terms.
-
Melita Pockit Pass L: its standard data allowance is usable in Malta, the EU and the UK under the published bundle terms.
-
GO Smart Unlimited: unlimited refers to local Malta use; the standard plan has a separate 28 GB Zone 1 roaming allowance.
GO’s roaming terms are designed around customers normally based in Malta and travelling occasionally. A Maltese SIM should not be treated as an unrestricted, permanent European data plan.
Roafly’s Malta country package covers Malta. Check the destination list of a regional package separately if your itinerary continues to Sicily or another country.
Malta tourist SIM questions
Can I keep using my existing WhatsApp number?
Yes. Changing the SIM used for mobile data does not require changing your WhatsApp number. Keep the existing number in WhatsApp rather than starting the app’s number-change process.
Can I get a Maltese number through an eSIM?
Yes. GO offers local mobile service through eSIM, including a new-number route through its app. The distinction is between the service you buy and the SIM format: a local operator eSIM can provide a Maltese number, while Roafly’s Malta plan supplies data.
Our recommendation: start with Epic if buying at the airport is your priority, compare GO for heavy local data use, and consider Melita for a larger call-and-data bundle. Roafly suits visitors who prefer a-time data purchase with 30-day validity and setup before the trip.
Roafly publishes this guide and sells the travel eSIM discussed above.
