Local prepaid SIM cards make sense in Ireland if you want an Irish number, plenty of data or help setting up your phone in a shop. Vodafone and Three both have €20 offers lasting 28 days, while Three’s separately branded tourist plans have different prices and allowances.

The table separates standard prepaid offers from visitor bundles because “tourist SIM” does not automatically mean better value. You can choose an Ireland eSIM before departure if keeping your existing SIM in place matters more than having an Irish number.

Vodafone, Three and eir: Which Local Plan Fits Your Trip?

Vodafone: a clear option for data plus occasional calls

Vodafone’s Data Unlimited 5G offer combines unlimited domestic data with a modest calling and texting allowance. It is explicitly offered to visitors and is available as a local-operator eSIM as well as through physical-SIM buying channels.

The package includes:

• 100 national minutes and 100 national texts.

• 100 international minutes to the included destinations.

• Unlimited Vodafone-to-Vodafone calls and texts.

• A separate 45GB EU roaming data allowance.

National minutes and international minutes serve different purposes. Calling an Irish accommodation provider is not the same as calling your home country, so check that your destination is included before relying on the international allowance.

Three: compare standard prepaid with the visitor range

Three Super Surfer suits a trip where domestic data matters more than extensive calling. Its current offer includes a 200-minute/text allowance and a separate 30GB EU data allowance alongside All You Can Eat data in the Republic of Ireland.

The visitor range solves a different problem. Visit Ireland 5GB includes 50 minutes for use in the Republic, while Visit Ireland 25GB includes a combined allowance of 250 minutes/texts plus 50 international minutes.

The visitor plans have a material roaming inconsistency: their package cards mention Ireland and EU data, but the accompanying conditions restrict allowances to the Republic of Ireland. The visitor price guide also describes domestic data and does not establish an included roaming allowance. Treat those plans as Republic-only unless Three confirms otherwise for the exact package you buy.

eir: another local prepaid option to compare in store

eir also advertises unlimited domestic data with a €20 prepaid top-up. Its prepaid setup uses an offer selection followed by the required top-up, so ask for the specific prepaid offer rather than a generic “SIM-only” product.

The details matter more than the headline: get the offer’s duration, included calls and texts, roaming allowance and complete starter price together. eir’s published prepaid conditions apply limits to included voice and text allowances, and domestic unlimited data should not be read as unlimited roaming.

Roafly’s Ireland packages use Eir, but an eir retail SIM and a Roafly eSIM have separate package terms. Sharing a local network does not give the two products identical allowances or calling features.

Where to Buy a SIM Card in Ireland

Dublin Airport

Vodafone and Three both identify WHSmith in Terminal 1 and SIM vending machines in Terminals 1 and 2 as airport buying channels. These are useful if you want a physical SIM before continuing your journey.

Airport pricing can differ from the operator’s advertised top-up amount. Read the package name and the complete price on the product offered; the presence of a Vodafone or Three logo alone does not establish which plan you are buying.

Dublin city centre

Henry Street offers concrete places to compare local options:

Visit an operator shop if you need help selecting the right prepaid offer or testing the connection. Ask for a new prepaid number and explain that you are visiting; number-transfer promotions may not apply to a new tourist SIM.

Beyond Dublin

You can also buy through operator shops while travelling around the country. Three’s store directory includes 1 Shop Street in Galway and 59 High Street in Killarney, which are practical examples for trips continuing west or southwest.

Store listings establish a buying location, not the day’s stock. If your itinerary depends on purchasing a particular physical SIM there, contact that branch before making a special journey.

Buying

Vodafone and Three both offer local prepaid eSIM routes for compatible phones. A shop visit is therefore not inevitable when choosing a local operator.

Physical SIM delivery needs more planning. Use it when the delivery address and arrival timing work for your stay; ordering an eSIM avoids waiting for a card to reach your accommodation.

Documents, Payment and Activating Your SIM

Do not confuse registering an account with a universal passport-registration requirement. Three’s privacy notice says prepaid customers do not have to provide their name, address and date of birth, although supplying information is necessary for its sign-in services. That policy should not be extended to every operator, retailer or purchase channel.

Keep identification available if the seller requests it, and establish any required customer details before paying. The important questions are whether you can get a new prepaid number, how the chosen offer is activated and what the complete transaction costs.

Use this setup sequence:

1. Check your phone. It must be unlocked; a physical card also needs a compatible SIM slot, while an eSIM needs device support.

2. Select the exact offer. Give the package name, not just the amount you want to spend.

3. Separate the charges. Ask for any SIM or service charge alongside the required first top-up.

4. Activate the bundle. Follow the operator’s instructions and wait for confirmation before using mobile data.

5. Test with Wi-Fi off. Open a webpage or map and verify that the expected allowance is active.

Three supports top-ups by debit card, credit card or PayPal. Available payment methods depend on the buying channel; vending machines and staffed shops need not offer the same choices.

Top-up credit is not always spare money left on the account. Vodafone deducts the qualifying payment to activate the bundle, so a zero cash balance afterwards can be normal. With Vodafone and Three, another qualifying full top-up during an active cycle can restart the offer and replace remaining allowances. Add extra credit according to the plan’s instructions rather than automatically repeating the original payment.

Local SIM or Roafly eSIM?

Local prepaid is the stronger fit when you need an Irish number, ordinary mobile calls or a large domestic data allowance. It also works for a compatible unlocked phone that has a physical SIM slot but no eSIM support.

Crossing into Northern Ireland

Belfast and the Causeway Coast are in the UK. Treat that part of your itinerary as a separate coverage and roaming check: an Ireland allowance or an EU allowance alone does not establish the exact UK terms of your package.

Before crossing, establish:

• Whether the exact plan includes UK use.

• How much roaming data is available.

• Whether calls and texts remain included.

• What happens after the allowance expires or is used up.
