Buying a SIM card in Hungary starts with a practical choice: do you need a Hungarian phone number, a large short-term data allowance, or internet arranged before arrival? Telekom and offer inexpensive prepaid starters, while Yettel has dedicated visitor passes. Foreign-passport holders should plan around in-person registration for a local physical SIM.

Local SIM Prices and Tourist Plans

Compare the amount you need for the whole trip, alongside the purchase and activation requirements. The low starter price can be useful for light use, but additional data and calling credit are separate purchases.

Telekom: Separate Domino From Travel SIM

Domino Fix is worth considering when a small data allowance and local calls cover your needs. Its long availability period does not mean the included data renews every month.

There is a purchase detail to settle at the counter. Telekom’s prepaid tariff conditions require at least 15 HUF of cash balance or a qualifying periodic data balance for internet access. Ask the employee whether your chosen starter needs an additional top-up and have them demonstrate working mobile data before you leave.

Telekom also has recurring Domino First and Domino Next offers. Those suit a different buying pattern: establish which allowance renews, what it costs and how renewal uses your prepaid balance before accepting.

Travel SIM is the simpler fixed-duration visitor product. Besides the option in the table, there is a 100 GB package for 30 days at 15,000 HUF. Both Travel SIM versions provide data without outgoing calls or SMS, and they cannot be topped up after the allowance runs out.

One: A Small Starter With Optional Extra Data

One is the current brand of the former Vodafone Hungary service. Its Tuti prepaid offer is useful if you want a local line without committing to a large tourist package.

The included minutes cover standard Hungarian numbers when calling domestically. They are not a general international calling allowance.

Additional data gives you room to expand:

• 5 GB for 30 days: 2,290 HUF.

• 20 GB for 30 days: 4,990 HUF.

These are add-on charges, separate from buying the starter SIM. Request a-time option for a single holiday and ask how much credit you must load to activate it; the top-up payment and the amount consumed by the add-on can differ.

The 500 HUF SIM advertised and through retail partners has a different buying route. For a foreign visitor, buying directly in a store keeps the purchase and registration in place.

Yettel: Short Passes for Heavy Data Use

Yettel’s short passes make sense if you expect substantial data use over a few days. Their time limit matters more than the size of a conventional allowance: a three-day pass will not cover the end of a week-long stay.

Yettel Stay is the alternative for a longer visit: 30 GB across Hungary and the EU, valid for 30 days, for 12,000 HUF. It supports voice service, but contains no starting cash balance. Calls require a top-up and cost 30 HUF per minute; SMS costs 30 HUF.

Where to Buy a SIM Card in Hungary

Budapest City Stores

Buying in an operator store is the most straightforward starting point with a foreign passport. You can choose the package, complete registration and get help testing the connection in the same visit.

Yettel identifies these central branches on its visitor SIM and store guide:

Pick a branch that fits your route through Budapest. Saving a small amount on a starter becomes less useful if buying and activating it requires separate journeys.

Telekom’s Travel SIM sales point is at Budapest Airport Terminal 2B, on the landside arrivals level. This provides a verified airport buying route for the dedicated visitor product.

Treat airport convenience and package suitability as separate decisions. Someone needing ordinary phone calls should request a voice-capable plan rather than assume that a physical Travel SIM includes them. Check the sales point’s opening hours against your arrival before depending on it.

Supermarkets and Other Retailers

Physical starter packs are also sold through other retail channels.’s Instant SIM distribution includes petrol stations, supermarkets, post offices and electronics retailers, but foreign customers must visit a store to activate the pack.

Telekom Domino Quick products likewise require activation after purchase. A pack on a supermarket shelf is therefore not necessarily the quickest route to a working connection with foreign documents.

Passport Registration, Activation and Top-Ups

Hungarian prepaid subscriptions require identity verification. Visitors using foreign identification should expect to complete the local physical-SIM contract in person.

Bring your passport. Yettel and specifically require it for customers outside the EU/EEA document categories they accept; a foreign driving licence is not a universal substitute. also requires a valid email address for the contract.

Use this short sequence in the shop:

1. Explain the trip. Give your departure date, likely data use and whether you need ordinary calls.

2. Request the payment breakdown. Separate the SIM, data package, required credit and any service charge.

3. Identify the renewal setting. Ask for a-time allowance when that suits your stay.

4. Complete registration before relying on the SIM. Keep the SIM carrier and account details.

5. Test with Wi-Fi switched off. Open a webpage and, if you bought voice service, test the calling setup.

Your phone must be unlocked and have the appropriate SIM support. Check that before leaving home; registration cannot resolve a carrier lock.

Prepaid account credit and mobile data are different balances. Loading money does not necessarily activate the data option you want. Keep enough information to repeat the correct purchase through the operator’s app or in a store.

Annual identity revalidation matters if you keep a Hungarian prepaid number for future visits. Follow the operator’s deadline rather than assuming an unused SIM will remain available indefinitely.
