Arriving in Georgia: Red vs. Green Channel
Landing in Georgia is usually a smooth experience, but the final step before you exit the airport is critical. Like most countries, Georgia uses the Red Channel / Green Channel system.
The moment you collect your bags, you must make a choice. This applies whether you land at Tbilisi (TBS), Batumi (BUS), or Kutaisi (KUT).
-
Green Channel: Walk through here if you have nothing to declare. This means your luggage contains only personal items within the legal limits (listed below).
-
Red Channel: You MUST use this lane if you are carrying items over the duty-free limits, large amounts of cash, or restricted medications.
Strict Warning: Custom officers in Georgia frequently scan luggage even in the Green Channel. "I didn't know" is not a valid defense and will not save you from fines.
Customs Limits & Allowances
Georgia is surprisingly generous with alcohol (it is the birthplace of wine, after all), but strict on other goods. These limits apply per person (aged 18+).
⚠️ NEW 2026 RULE: Mandatory Insurance As of January 1, 2026, ALL visitors entering Georgia must have valid health/accident insurance for the duration of their stay. You may be asked to show proof (digital or printed) at passport control. Failure to have this can result in fines or entry denial.
The "Big Ban" / The Trap: Medications
This is where most travelers get into trouble. Georgia has extremely strict drug laws.
Items that are common over-the-counter remedies in the USA or Europe (like Sudafed, Codeine, or ADHD meds) are considered illegal narcotics in Georgia if you do not have the correct paperwork.
The Trap: Bringing "just a few" painkillers containing Codeine or flu medicine with Pseudoephedrine.
The Consequence: If found, you could face heavy criminal charges, not just a fine.
-
Rule: If you must bring prescription meds, you need a doctor's prescription translated into English or Georgian, and in some cases, pre-approval from the Georgian government.
-
Advice: Carry only what you absolutely need, keep it in original packaging, and if in doubt, declare it in the Red Channel.
Banned & Restricted Items List
Do not pack these items unless you have specific government permits.
-
Weapons & Explosives: Firearms, ammunition, stun guns, and knuckledusters.
-
Narcotics: Recreational drugs (Zero tolerance).
-
Meat & Dairy: Fresh meat and dairy products from outside the region are often restricted to prevent agricultural diseases.
-
Psychotropic Substances: Strictly regulated (see medication section above).
-
Antiques: You cannot export Georgian antiques or art without a permit from the Ministry of Culture (keep this in mind for your return flight).
For the official list and specific declarations, refer to the Revenue Service of Georgia (RS.GE)
Fines & Payment
If you are caught in the Green Channel with undeclared items:
-
Confiscation: You will lose the items immediately.
-
Fines: Penalties start at roughly 1,000 GEL for first-time offenses regarding undeclared goods.
-
Medication Offenses: These are treated much more severely and can involve court appearances, deportation, or jail time depending on the substance quantity.
Can you pay on the spot? Usually, customs fines are issued as official tickets which must be paid at a bank or payment terminal. Do not attempt to bribe officers; anti-corruption laws are strictly enforced.
Instant Internet at Customs
The moment you land, you might need to show your digital insurance policy, translate a medication label for an officer, or simply order a Bolt taxi to the city center. Airport Wi-Fi can be spotty or require SMS login (which you can't get without service!).
Don't risk being offline during a customs inspection.
-
Avoid Roaming Fees: Daily roaming charges from your home carrier can cost more than a fine.
-
The Solution: Download an eSIM before you fly. It activates instantly when you land in Tbilisi or Batumi.
