Ecuador SIM Card for Tourists: Prices, Registration & Where to Buy

Claro is a practical starting point if you want a physical SIM and help registering it with a passport. Tuenti also has a registration route for foreigners, while Movistar offers prepaid bundles worth checking the cost and activation of a new line are settled.

The important distinction is between buying a chip, activating a line and adding a data package. Paying for does not necessarily complete all three.

Ecuador SIM Options and What You Actually Pay

Ecuador's offers below are priced in US dollars. Compare the allowance available for general browsing, its validity and any separate SIM charge—not just the largest GB figure on an advertisement.

The $4 Claro starter and a 30-day data package serve different purposes. Likewise, Movistar's $9 bundle should not be treated as the complete price of walking into a shop and leaving with a newly registered line.

Claro, Tuenti and the Other Local Options

Claro: a Clear Passport-Registration Route

Claro is our starting recommendation for an in-person physical-SIM purchase because its tourist instructions explicitly cover buying and activating a chip at a customer service center with a passport.

Its $4 Claro Chip includes a short welcome promotion. Ask for the general-data allowance in the package you are actually buying, especially if the seller proposes a separate recharge for the rest of your stay.

There are also different starter products:

• Red Claro Chip packaging: includes a welcome promotion.

• White basic-chip packaging: does not include credit or a package and requires a recharge to activate.

The packaging distinction matters more than a seller simply saying “Claro SIM.” Before paying, establish which starter you are receiving and what additional purchase makes it usable for your trip.

Tuenti: Foreigners Need Assisted Activation

Tuenti can register a new line for a foreign visitor, but the ordinary self-service instructions use an Ecuadorian identity card. Foreigners follow a separate process with a representative.

Its local prepaid offers also need careful reading. The current new-line page promotes an eSIM option; that advertised price should not be carried across to a physical chip bought from a retailer.

Ask for a new-line offer, the amount of general-purpose data and the total including the chip. Keep-time combo purchases separate from an optional subscription that charges a saved card automatically.

Movistar: Useful Bundle Prices, With a New-Line Question

Movistar's prepaid combos include 5 GB for seven days at $3, 6 GB for 15 days at $5, and the 30-day option shown in the table. Those prices include taxes.

These are useful recharge benchmarks. We have not verified a complete new-line purchase price or an equally clear passport-activation process for a short-stay foreign visitor, so settle those two points with the sales channel first.

Movistar also advertises free SIM or eSIM benefits in a number-portability context. Moving an existing Ecuadorian number is a different transaction from buying your first local line.

What About CNT?

CNT is another local option, but its port-in promotions should not be treated as arrival offers for visitors without an existing Ecuadorian number.

We have not established a sufficiently clear current combination of new-line price and tourist registration to recommend a specific CNT package here. That leaves Claro as the more straightforward starting point for a passport-based physical-SIM purchase.

Where to Buy a SIM Card in Ecuador

Official Service Centers

Start with a Claro customer service center if you want staff to handle passport registration. Buying the chip and registering it in the same visit reduces the chance of leaving step unfinished.

Use the visit to resolve the complete transaction:

• Which chip or starter is included?

• How much data works across ordinary websites and apps?

• How long does that allowance last?

• What is the full amount due, including any additional charges?

Keep the package and receipt until the line works. Before leaving, switch off Wi-Fi and test mobile data.

Quito Airport and Arrival Purchases

Quito Airport Center lists SIM Store on level P3, offering physical SIMs and eSIMs. That listing establishes a buying location, but it does not establish today's Ecuador package stock, passport assistance or complete local-SIM price.

Treat an airport quote as a specific seller's offer. Check the local operator, general-data allowance, validity and activation assistance before deciding whether it suits your arrival plans.

Retailers and Recharge Outlets

Buying credit is not the same as registering a new line. Claro identifies supermarket and pharmacy channels for prepaid purchases, but a convenient recharge outlet is not automatically equipped to handle passport activation.

Plan the shop visit around your itinerary and keep your phone and passport secure while handling the purchase. Read the destination-specific safety advice for Ecuador when deciding how to travel between your accommodation and the store.

How Passport Registration and Activation Work

Bring your passport and an unlocked phone. The instructions below are operator-specific; the identity-card activation flow intended for Ecuadorian customers should not be mistaken for the foreign-visitor process.

Activating Claro With a Passport

The simplest in-person route follows Claro's passport-activation instructions:

1. Visit a Claro customer service center with your passport.

2. Bring the Claro Chip if you have already bought it, or purchase it there.

3. Tell the adviser you want to activate the line using a passport.

4. Agree on any additional data package and the total before paying.

5. Test the connection and retain the starter packaging.

Claro also provides a remote passport-registration route, including an email process. Its published instructions involve a passport photo, personal details and a subsequent activation call; that is a separate workflow from having staff assist you in person.

Activating Tuenti as a Foreigner

Tuenti's foreign-customer activation process asks you to contact a representative and supply:

• Your full name.

• Photos of your passport.

• The chip's serial number, beginning with 89593 and containing at least 19 digits.

• Your phone's IMEI, which you can display by dialing *#06#.

Use the operator's official support channel for that exchange. The self-service process asking for an Ecuadorian cédula and its issue year is not the same route.

Payment, Packages and Renewal

Movistar offers combo purchases using available credit or a credit/debit card. Tuenti also supports card-based purchases, with an optional subscription route.

On a-off trip, distinguish a single purchase from automatic renewal. Check the selected payment option before completing it, and keep the confirmation showing the allowance and expiry.

Do not assume that social-app bonuses are interchangeable with ordinary data. A package can reserve some of its advertised GB for named apps; use the general-browsing allowance when comparing it with Roafly.

Local SIM or Roafly eSIM: Which Fits Your Trip?

A local SIM is worth the extra step when a local number or ordinary mobile calls matter. It also serves phones that accept physical SIMs but do not support eSIM. Local bundles may offer attractive data pricing you have established the complete purchase cost.

Match the Connection to Your Route

Use the places you will actually visit when checking coverage. A country name on a package is too broad to answer whether it will serve a particular lodge, road journey or island stop.

Before buying for a trip beyond your main city stay:

• Locate your accommodation and planned stops on the operator's coverage map.

• Ask remote accommodation which mobile networks work at the property.

• Save maps, booking details and meeting instructions offline.

If Galápagos is part of your itinerary, ask about your specific islands and accommodation. Do not treat an Ecuador-wide package description as confirmation of service on every island or while traveling between them.

Buying more GB increases the allowance; it does not resolve a coverage gap.

Ecuador SIM Card Questions

Can I Keep My Existing WhatsApp Number?

Yes. You can continue using an already configured WhatsApp account with your existing number while using another SIM or eSIM for mobile data. You do not need to use WhatsApp's Change Number feature simply because the data connection changes.

Keep access to your original number if you may need to verify the account again.

Can I Buy a Local eSIM Instead of a Physical SIM?

Claro and Tuenti advertise local prepaid eSIM options. However, eSIM availability and passport eligibility for a particular checkout are separate questions.

We have not verified that every local-eSIM purchase flow accepts a foreign passport. Establish the registration route before relying on for arrival.

Are the Free Welcome Bonuses Guaranteed?

Use the terms attached to the offer you purchase. Claro's tourist page still includes a separate 2 GB bonus with a stated end date of January 15, 2026; that expired offer is not included in this comparison.

Do not count a displayed promotion toward your trip's allowance after its stated expiry.

Our recommendation: start with a Claro service center for a physical SIM with passport assistance. Consider Tuenti if you are comfortable completing assisted registration, and use Movistar's bundle prices after resolving the new-line purchase. Roafly is the practical alternative when you want data arranged before departure and do not need a local number.
