You can buy an Indian SIM at the Airtel counter in Terminal 3’s international arrivals hall, after customs. It suits visitors who want an Indian phone number and local calls; Roafly suits those who mainly need mobile data and prefer to arrange their connection before flying.
International arrivals using Terminal 3 should look for Airtel after collecting their luggage and clearing customs, before leaving the terminal building. Ask the airport information desk for directions if you cannot locate the counter.
The main choices serve different needs:
| Option | Price basis | Data and validity | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airtel at T3 arrivals | ₹500 advertised in a dated counter observation | 1.5 GB per day for 28 days, with unlimited calls within India | Visitors who want a local number and calling allowance |
| Roafly India eSIM | From US$4.90 | 1 GB for 7 days; larger packages available | Mobile data arranged before departure |
| Airport Wi-Fi | Free | Internet access within the airport | Arrival messages, bookings and completing setup |
Information checked on 23 October 2026. The Airtel offer was recorded in SogdiaRoam’s field report on 17 October 2026; it is an advertised counter price, not a verified purchase receipt. Roafly pricing was checked on its India product page.
Do not plan around finding several competing operator counters beside each other. Airtel is the arrival seller established by the evidence reviewed for this guide.
If your phone has no physical SIM slot, establish whether the counter can issue a new local eSIM using your foreign passport before paying. An operator’s general eSIM service does not establish that every airport transaction supports it.
For the wider choice between local prepaid service, roaming and travel eSIMs, compare the internet options in India.
The useful price is the complete amount needed to leave with a registered line and the promised package. The ₹500 observation gives you a reference, but the counter should explain the current offer and any separate charge before taking payment.
Ask for these details together:
The total in Indian rupees, including the SIM, first recharge and any service charge.
The daily data allowance and package expiry date.
Included calls and SMS.
Whether staff will complete foreign-passport registration and help with activation.
Accepted payment methods and the expected time until data works.
Current counter hours and payment methods could not be independently reconfirmed for this guide. Keep a backup connection available for a late arrival, and do not depend solely on a foreign payment card being accepted.
Keep your receipt and SIM packaging. If activation is complete, switch off Wi-Fi and load a webpage over mobile data before leaving. Test calling separately if that is an important reason for buying the line.
Indian local SIMs require identity verification. Foreign tourists can use their passport and valid visa documentation; India’s subscriber-verification rules also allow the address of their hotel or other accommodation when they have no local reference.
Have the following ready:
Your original passport and visa details.
Your accommodation’s full address and booking confirmation.
Access to your email account.
Copies of your documents and a spare passport-size photograph as useful backups for the registration process.
The absence of an existing Indian mobile number is not, by itself, a universal barrier to registration. Under the foreign-visitor OTP rules, the alternate-number OTP signature requirement is optional for visiting foreign nationals, and operators may use email when sending that OTP to an alternate number is not feasible.
Counter staff still need to complete their registration process. Ask how they handle foreign-passport applications rather than assuming that a standard domestic online signup will work for you.
Buying the SIM and having working data are separate steps. There is no sufficiently reliable, current airport-specific activation time to promise that every visitor will be connected within a fixed number of minutes. Get the expected timing and any remaining verification instructions before leaving the counter.
Longer-stay visitors should also distinguish package validity from the lifetime of the registered connection. Foreign tourist connections cannot extend beyond the visa’s validity and are limited to three months at a time under the applicable registration rules.
Buying in the city makes sense if you can reach your accommodation without a new local line and want more time to compare packages. Visit an operator store and explain that you need a new prepaid connection registered to a foreign passport.
Airtel offers new prepaid connections in Delhi, including an online delivery route. However, that ordering process begins with a mobile-number OTP and delivery details, so it should not be treated as a ready-made airport replacement for every newly arrived visitor.
Compare the store’s complete new-connection quote, not just a recharge price advertised online. Recharge offers for an existing line may exclude the practical steps involved in obtaining and registering your first Indian SIM.
There is no verified like-for-like city quote here that establishes an exact saving over the observed airport offer. Leaving the airport solely to save an assumed amount is therefore difficult to justify if you need a local number immediately.
The guide to buying a local SIM in India covers Airtel, Jio and Vi more broadly, including the questions to ask when purchasing outside the airport.
Roafly’s India eSIM lets you arrange mobile data before departure without relying on airport SIM stock, counter hours or a physical SIM swap.
India plans use Jio, with 5G where available. They are data-only, support hotspot within your purchased allowance and offer top-ups. Roafly does not require identity verification for this product.
Your device must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Install over a reliable internet connection before travelling, then select the Roafly line for mobile data and enable data roaming on that line as instructed when you arrive. Package validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a supported network in India.
Roafly is a practical choice for maps, messaging, browsing and accessing bookings. It does not provide an Indian phone number, ordinary mobile calls or SMS. If drivers need to call you directly, or a service requires verification through an Indian number, a local SIM may better meet that need.

You do not need to buy a local SIM just to access the airport’s free Wi-Fi. Delhi Airport provides a passport-based login route for visitors without an active Indian mobile number.
Follow the airport’s Wi-Fi connection instructions:
Visit an information desk or self-service Wi-Fi kiosk.
Scan your passport at the kiosk, or present it at the desk.
Collect the access coupon.
Enter the supplied KYC ID and coupon code, following the login instructions.
Passengers with an active Indian number can instead connect to GMR FREE WIFI and complete the mobile-number OTP login.
Use this connection to contact your accommodation, retrieve a transfer confirmation or finish an eSIM installation. Save your hotel address, meeting point and an offline map before leaving the terminal, since airport Wi-Fi will not accompany you into the city.
You need an Indian number and local calls: Visit the T3 Airtel counter with your passport, visa details and accommodation address. Allow time for registration and establish when the line will become usable.
You mainly need maps, messages and bookings: Prepare Roafly before departure. You can keep WhatsApp registered to your existing number while using the eSIM for data.
Your phone does not support eSIM: Use the airport’s passport-based Wi-Fi login for immediate messages, then buy a physical SIM at the airport or an operator store in Delhi. Save your transfer details in advance.
Your connection or pickup leaves little spare time: Arrange mobile data or a suitable home-operator roaming allowance before flying. A SIM purchase adds registration and activation steps that should not determine whether you can find your driver or continue your journey.
Delhi Airport offers a useful local-SIM starting point, especially when an Indian number matters. Decide on that need before arrival: it is the clearest way to choose between the Airtel counter and an eSIM prepared at home.
