Azercell, Bakcell or Nar: Which Local SIM Fits Your Trip?

Azercell: clear SIM inclusion and larger bundles

Azercell is a useful starting point for budgeting because its tourist packages include a physical SIM or eSIM. Foreign visitors can apply at an Azercell Exclusive office or official dealer with a foreign passport.

There are two larger options beyond the starting package:

• 60 GB for 59 AZN, valid for 30 days.

• 120 GB for 79 AZN, valid for 30 days.

Think about the whole stay when selecting your allowance. Separate additional internet packages are unavailable within the Travel tariff, although the Travel packages themselves can be renewed.

The tourist number is valid for 30 days. Keeping it longer requires a visit to a designated Azercell Exclusive office, so leave time for that if you plan to extend your trip.

Bakcell: separate local and international call allowances

Bakcell’s TravelSIM range is worth considering if you expect to make international calls as well as calls within Azerbaijan. The two minute allowances are separate, which makes it easier to budget for each.

Its larger monthly choices are TravelSIM 55, with 60 GB and 100 minutes in each call category, and TravelSIM 75, with 120 GB and 150 minutes in each category. The package prices are 55 AZN and 75 AZN respectively.

The choice between these tiers should follow your expected data use. Downloading large files or regularly using mobile internet in place of accommodation Wi-Fi can justify the extra allowance; a short trip with modest phone use may leave much of it unused.

Nar: judge the general data first

Nar TouristSIM combines a general data balance with a separate social media balance. That can suit a trip where much of your phone use falls within the eligible social apps.

Budget from the general allowance first, then treat the social allocation as an additional benefit. Before relying on it, ask which apps and types of traffic qualify, including whether calls within those apps are covered.

Nar also gives its starting package more domestic minutes than Bakcell’s entry option, but fewer international minutes. That difference may matter more than the combined data headline if you expect to call local accommodation or other businesses.

Where to Buy a SIM Card in Azerbaijan

Visit an official operator shop to discuss the package, complete registration and get help with activation. In central Baku, Azercell’s Fountain CC at 26A Z. Taghiyev Street is option.

Take your phone with you. Having the SIM fitted or the eSIM installed at the counter lets you test mobile data before leaving and resolve any immediate setup problem with the seller.

Keep the purchase conversation focused on four things:

• The total payable today, including the number, SIM and activation.

• The amount of general data and any app-specific allowance.

• The package expiry date and the number’s validity.

• Whether the package renews automatically and how to stop renewal.

If you encounter a SIM offer at your arrival airport, use the same checklist. The location alone does not tell you whether the offer matches the operator’s standard tourist package.

Save your accommodation address and arrival instructions offline beforehand. That gives you some breathing room to arrange connectivity after landing instead of making the purchase while trying to find your way into Baku.

Passport Registration and Phone Checks

Register the number in your own name

Bring your original passport when visiting a mobile shop. Azercell’s tourist offer explicitly accepts foreign passports; for any local purchase, make sure the number is registered to you and retain the receipt and SIM packaging.

Before handing over payment, have the seller explain what you are receiving: a new number, the selected tourist package and any extra services. Then test a webpage with Wi-Fi switched off.

Your phone must also be unlocked for use with another operator. If you plan to buy a physical SIM, it needs a suitable SIM slot; an eSIM purchase requires an eSIM-compatible model.

Keep phone registration separate from SIM registration

Azerbaijan has a separate mobile-device registration system. Registering a SIM in your name and registering the handset’s IMEI are different processes.
