The "Big Ban" / The Trap
The most dangerous trap for travelers entering Azerbaijan involves specific prescription medications and drones.
Azerbaijan has zero-tolerance laws regarding narcotics and psychotropic substances. Many standard ADHD medications, strong painkillers (like those containing codeine), and certain anti-anxiety drugs are highly illegal without prior approval. If you must travel with controlled medication, you need a translated, notarized prescription and must declare it in the Red Channel. Furthermore, bringing a drone into Azerbaijan without special advance permission from the state authorities is strictly banned; it will be confiscated immediately at the airport.

Fines & Payment
If you are caught smuggling or failing to declare restricted items, the consequences are immediate. Minor infractions, such as slightly exceeding the alcohol or tobacco limit, usually result in the confiscation of the excess goods and a cash fine paid in Azerbaijani Manat (AZN).
Major violations, such as undeclared cash over $10,000, unauthorized drones, or banned medications, will result in total confiscation, heavy financial penalties, detainment, and potential deportation. Fines must typically be paid on the spot or before you are legally permitted to leave the country.
Fast Internet at Customs Security
A working internet connection is critical the moment you step off the plane. You may need to translate a customs document, show digital hotel reservations, or access your banking app to prove sufficient funds or pay a sudden fine. Relying on slow or restrictive airport Wi-Fi is a major risk.
