Buying a local SIM in Tajikistan involves more than choosing a data bundle. Match the operator to your route, get the full shop price and separate your SIM registration from your phone’s IMEI requirements.

Tourists can buy a local SIM in Tajikistan through an operator’s service centre, using a passport and the documents relevant to their lawful stay. Local prepaid plans offer substantial data allowances and a Tajik number, making them useful for calling drivers, accommodation and other local contacts.
The important detail is timing: a 30-day data package, the period for which your foreign-registered line remains active and the phone’s IMEI registration deadline are separate. Establish all three before leaving the shop, especially if your route takes you into the Pamirs.
Tcell, MegaFon and ZET-Mobile offer useful starting points for a local SIM comparison. The plans below have different allowances, so compare the amount you will actually use, the local calls included and the network available along your route.
| Operator and plan | General data and validity | Domestic calls and SMS | Package fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tcell Salom+100 | 40 GB / 30 days | 50 minutes, 50 SMS; unlimited calls within Tcell | 100 TJS |
| MegaFon “For a start” configuration | 28 GB / monthly billing | 50 minutes; unlimited calls within MegaFon; no SMS bundle | 84.50 TJS |
| ZET-Mobile SUPER MAX | 25 GB / 30 days | 150 minutes; SMS charged separately unless selected as an extra benefit | 59 TJS |
Operator package fees checked on 4 November 2026. Prices and terms may change. These figures exclude any SIM, number or activation charge quoted at purchase.
Ask for an itemised total covering the SIM or number, connection and first package payment. Have the seller explain which amounts become usable balance and which are fees; a package price alone is not the full new-customer quote.
Salom+100 is worth considering if you expect to use plenty of data and need some domestic calls and SMS. Its 40 GB general allowance can be used across your ordinary internet activity, rather than relying on a large quota restricted to selected apps.
The package also includes unlimited internet from midnight to 7am and unlimited calls within Tcell. Keep those extras separate from the 40 GB when comparing it with another operator: overnight data will do little for navigation or video calls during the day.
MegaFon’s entry configuration pairs 28 GB with 50 domestic minutes. Its network is particularly relevant to a mountain itinerary: the operator has infrastructure in Gorno-Badakhshan, and its early-2026 expansion included equipment in Murghab district.
That makes MegaFon a sensible operator to assess for a Pamir trip. Look at your overnight stops and remote stretches, rather than choosing entirely by the capital’s prices or expecting continuous service between settlements.
SUPER MAX has the lowest published package fee in this selection, with 25 GB of general data and 150 domestic minutes. It also includes 100 GB of night data and one selectable “SUPER Power” benefit.
The SUPER MAX terms make several details relevant to visitors:
The package lasts 30 days and renews automatically when the balance is sufficient.
The optional benefit must be selected in the ZET-Mobile app; choices include an extra 5 GB of general data or additional calls.
The included allowances are for domestic use and are unavailable in roaming.
Compare the base 25 GB with other general-data allowances. The overnight quota and optional app benefit should stay separate in your calculation.
Bring your original passport and the documents showing your lawful stay in Tajikistan. Depending on your entry arrangements, these may include a visa or temporary registration record. Keep your entry details available when the operator registers the number in your name.
The foreign-subscriber conditions at MegaFon distinguish between visa validity, registration validity and an authorised period of stay without registration. The line’s permitted service period follows the applicable arrangement.
Before paying, establish:
Which documents apply to your entry status. A registration exemption and a registration certificate are different situations.
The exact date your line will stop working. Do not use the data bundle’s expiry date as a substitute.
How to extend service if your stay continues. Ask which updated document the operator needs and where to present it.
What you are buying. Record the plan name, domestic number and complete upfront price.
Avoid relying on a universal claim that every foreign SIM lasts only ten days, or that buying a monthly plan automatically keeps the number active for a month. Your entry status and the operator’s registration record matter.
Visit an official operator service centre to handle the passport check, choose a plan and resolve activation problems in one visit. Tcell, MegaFon and ZET-Mobile have their own service channels; Babilon-Mobile is another local operator you may encounter.
Build the purchase around your arrival route:
Arriving in Dushanbe: use a staffed operator counter or service centre where the seller can register the line and explain its expiry date.
Arriving late at night: arrange the airport transfer and save your accommodation details before departure. Buying a local SIM the next day is easier when the first journey is already organised.
Entering overland: plan a service-centre stop in the next town or city instead of depending on a seller at the border.
Heading into the mountains: complete registration and test the connection before leaving the city where you buy it.
Use an unlocked phone that accepts the SIM format you are buying. Then work through these steps with the seller:
Have the number registered in your name and retain the receipt or contract.
Insert the SIM, select it for mobile data and let the seller help with any required settings.
Turn Wi-Fi off and load a webpage or map to test mobile data.
Test a domestic call if calling is part of your reason for buying.
Save the balance-check method, package expiry and line-expiry date.
Ask how to add credit using a payment method available to you. Adding balance and purchasing a fresh data package can be separate actions, so have the seller show you both.
Foreign visitors can use local mobile service for up to 30 days without entering their phone’s IMEI into Tajikistan’s state system. Continuing with local service beyond that period requires attention to the device-registration process.
The official IMEI guidance for foreign visitors also exempts devices operating in international roaming. The distinction is between local service and international roaming: replacing a physical local SIM with a local operator’s eSIM does not, by itself, change the rule.
| What has a deadline? | What determines it? |
|---|---|
| Your data allowance | The purchased package’s validity |
| Your local mobile line | The period allowed under your subscriber and stay documents |
| Your phone’s IMEI status | The separate device-registration rules |
If your trip will exceed 30 days, resolve the IMEI requirements before the grace period ends. Use the official system to establish the procedure and any applicable charges for your device and circumstances; do not budget from an old traveller’s quoted fee.
Dialling *#06# displays your phone’s IMEI identifiers. The state portal also provides an IMEI-status check, which is useful if you have previously used the device on a Tajik network.
City stays make it easier to choose around allowance and domestic calls. ZET SUPER MAX suits someone who needs both at a modest package fee; Tcell’s larger general-data bundle may be more useful for heavier use. Include the complete shop quote in that decision.
Mountain journeys change the priority. MegaFon’s presence in remote Gorno-Badakhshan settlements gives it a practical role in the shortlist, but a connected village does not establish coverage along the road leading to it.
Prepare for the route as well as the plan:
Download offline maps before leaving a reliable connection.
Save guesthouse addresses, driver details and booking information on the phone.
Agree meeting points and timings before long drives through remote areas.
Keep enough power for navigation between charging opportunities.
Crossing into Uzbekistan or Kyrgyzstan is a separate connectivity decision. Domestic allowances should not be treated as regional roaming: ZET SUPER MAX, for example, expressly excludes roaming use. Arrange coverage for the next country before crossing.
Roafly’s Tajikistan eSIM suits a trip centred on maps, messaging and bookings when you want to prepare mobile data before departure. It removes the physical SIM swap and local shop visit, while allowing you to keep your existing SIM installed on a compatible dual-SIM phone.
| Roafly plan | Validity | Standard price | Local networks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 GB | 30 days | $16.90 | MegaFon, ZET |
| 10 GB | 30 days | $29.90 | MegaFon, ZET |
Standard prices checked on 4 November 2026, before any promotional reduction. Prices and terms may change.

Local SIMs remain useful when you need a Tajik number for ordinary calls or SMS, or want a much larger allowance. Roafly does not supply a local number; its convenience is arranging your data without the local purchase process.
If you want a wider provider comparison before deciding, the best eSIM for Tajikistan guide covers travel-eSIM prices and networks separately.
Your phone must accept another operator’s SIM. Ask your home carrier to unlock it before travelling if necessary. An eSIM also requires an unlocked, eSIM-compatible device.
Yes. You can continue using WhatsApp with the number already registered in the app while a different SIM provides mobile data. Changing the data connection does not require you to change your WhatsApp number.
Buy a local SIM when you need domestic calls or a large data allowance, and settle the registration dates and total cost at the counter. Include MegaFon in the shortlist for a Pamir itinerary. If maps, messaging and bookings are your priority, Roafly lets you arrange your data before arrival.
Roafly publishes this guide and sells the travel-eSIM plans discussed above.
