Orange, Moldcell and Moldtelecom all offer prepaid options worth considering for a visit to Moldova. The important difference is how long the included data lasts: a large welcome allowance may expire after two weeks, even though the phone number stays active much longer.

Start with your existing plan if you have an EU mobile line, since Moldova joined the EU’s Roam Like at Home area on 1 January 2026. Otherwise, compare a local starter SIM with a travel eSIM based on your trip length, need for local calls and preferred setup.

Orange, Moldcell or Moldtelecom: Which Fits Your Trip?

Orange: watch the app bonus and offer deadline

Orange’s headline allowance includes two parts. The extra app data requires an action after activation, so ask for help claiming it before leaving the shop if you are unfamiliar with My Orange.

The current Orange PrePay offer also includes 250 national minutes/SMS. Its advertised activation promotion runs until 30 September 2026, so later arrivals should use the offer available on their purchase date.

The starter payment buys the SIM and its included benefits; it is not an additional balance available to spend. That distinction matters if you intend to buy another data option immediately.

Moldcell: understand the repeating package

Moldcell Cartelă 49 suits domestic use, with 250 national minutes/SMS alongside its data. The welcome bonus is allocated, while the smaller base allowance is the package that renews.

Automatic renewal follows a 14-day cycle, rather than a calendar month. Before adding more credit, establish how that balance will be used for the next cycle, especially if your stay extends beyond the initial fortnight.

Moldcell also offers Cartelă 80 cu Roaming UE for a longer period: 80 MDL, 40 GB plus a-time 110 GB welcome bonus, and 500 national minutes/SMS, with a 28-day validity. Its EU roaming data limit is 6.30 GB, considerably smaller than the domestic allowance.

Moldtelecom: a low initial price with fewer national minutes

Moldtelecom Prepay 40 combines its welcome data with 40 national minutes and unlimited calls within Moldtelecom’s fixed and mobile networks. It is a practical candidate if the initial package covers your visit and most communication happens through messaging apps.

Top-up options have their own allowances and validity periods. Keep the purchase comparison focused on the welcome package, then choose a recharge separately if your trip runs longer.

Where to Buy a SIM Card in Moldova

Chișinău offers several straightforward buying routes, from staffed operator shops to retail outlets. Decide whether you want help getting connected or simply need to buy the starter card.

• Central Chișinău: Moldcell lists shops at Ștefan cel Mare 134A and 126, as well as Alexandru Pușkin 30. A staffed outlet is useful for comparing physical SIM and local eSIM options.

• Shopping areas: Arborilor 21 is another listed Moldcell location, providing an alternative to the central boulevard.

• Chișinău airport: Moldcell’s authorized-point directory includes Dacia 80/3 at the airport. This confirms a listed buying location, but not the stock, counter hours or final price for your arrival.

• Everyday retailers: Moldcell distributes prepaid cards through kiosks, petrol stations, markets and post offices. Linella also lists physical Orange and Moldcell starter cards.

• Moldtelecom outlets and partners: Its prepaid distribution includes operator shops, selected petrol stations and retailers such as Enter, Darwin and Moldpresa.

Buying at the airport can save a separate stop in town. Buying from a staffed city shop gives you time to ask questions and test the connection; neither route should be assumed cheaper without comparing the actual offer.

Ask for the total payable to leave with a working SIM, including any starter-card, activation or setup charge. If the quoted total differs from the advertised package, have the seller explain the difference before paying.

Documents, Payment and Activation

Bring your passport to a staffed shop, particularly if you want a local eSIM or assistance with identification. Moldtelecom’s in-store eSIM instructions explicitly require an identity document.

The June 2026 proposal for prepaid-user identification envisaged a transition period; it does not establish a current blanket requirement. We could not confirm nationwide identification rule covering every prepaid sales channel as of 16 September 2026, so ask staff about the procedure for your chosen product.

Getting the connection working is otherwise a short practical checklist:

1. Check your phone first. It must be carrier-unlocked and support the SIM format you intend to buy.

2. Confirm the full payment. Ask which payment methods that outlet accepts; card payment does not establish card acceptance at every kiosk.

3. Activate the line. Orange’s physical PrePay process starts with inserting the SIM and making the first call, following the voice instructions.

4. Check the allowance and expiry. Make sure the welcome data appears and claim any app-only bonus.

5. Test mobile data before leaving. Switch off Wi-Fi and open a webpage or map, then keep the SIM packaging and account details.

Buying a local eSIM follows a different process from inserting a physical card. Orange offers PrePay eSIM purchases through My Orange with payment, and Moldcell also offers new prepaid eSIM numbers through its app. Account setup, payment and any identification steps belong to that operator’s purchase process.

Local SIM or Roafly eSIM?

Local prepaid service makes sense when your priority is a Moldovan number, included national calls or a large allowance at a low local price. Phones without eSIM support can also use a compatible physical starter SIM.

Consider the practical differences:

• Setup: Physical SIMs require a SIM swap or spare slot. Both local operators and Roafly offer eSIM options, so avoiding plastic is not exclusive to a travel eSIM.

• Keeping your home line: Compatible dual-SIM phones can retain the home line alongside the travel connection. Set the intended line for mobile data and review your home carrier’s roaming charges.

Check an existing EU line before buying

Moldova’s inclusion in Roam Like at Home means an eligible EU mobile plan may already cover your trip at domestic rates, subject to its roaming allowance and fair-use conditions. Check your carrier’s Moldova terms before purchasing a second connection.

This benefit depends on the mobile service you hold. An international travel package labelled “Europe” has its own country list and does not automatically include Moldova.

Similarly, a large domestic allowance on a Moldovan SIM is not necessarily available in Romania or elsewhere in the EU. Orange’s starter offer has a separate roaming limit, while Moldcell distinguishes its domestic Cartelă 49 from its EU-roaming option.

Match coverage checks to your actual route

Before travelling beyond Chișinău, inspect coverage around your accommodation and planned stops, including wineries or rural guesthouses. Download route maps before leaving a reliable connection; an operator’s national presence is not a promise of uninterrupted reception on every road.

Treat Transnistria separately when discussing service with the operator. Included national calling allowances can exclude numbers on networks there, and neither a Moldova package label nor an Orange network listing establishes guaranteed coverage throughout the region.

Moldova SIM Card FAQs

Can I keep my existing WhatsApp number?

Yes. Changing the SIM used for mobile data does not require changing the phone number registered to WhatsApp. Keep access to your original number in case the app later asks you to verify it.

Will my SIM stop working when the included data expires?

The package expiry and the phone number’s active period are different. Your included data can expire while the number remains active, so use the operator’s app or account menu to check both.

Before continuing to browse after a package expires, activate another suitable allowance. Standard usage charges can consume remaining prepaid credit quickly.

Can two people share connection?

Roafly allows hotspot sharing from the purchased data allowance on a compatible phone. Sharing uses the same balance, so account for both people’s usage; local SIM hotspot conditions should be checked for the chosen offer.
