SIM sales are documented at La Aurora, but current counter hours and complete airport prices are not reliably published. Buying on arrival can suit visitors who want a local number and find an open seller; arranging data before departure is more practical when a late arrival or waiting transfer leaves little room for shopping.
La Aurora has documented SIM sales, although the available evidence is stronger on their existence than on today's counter arrangements. Start with the connection you need for your first journey:
| Option | Most useful when | Main trade-off | Price position |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airport SIM seller | You want a local line before leaving GUA | Depends on an open seller, stock and registration | Current airport price not reliably published |
| Claro or Tigo city store | You can reach your accommodation before buying | Requires a separate shop visit | Compare the SIM, package and any setup charges |
| Roafly eSIM | You want to prepare mobile data before flying | Requires an unlocked, eSIM-compatible device; no local number | Current plans appear below |
| Airport Wi-Fi | You need to message your driver or open a booking | Only useful while connected to the airport network | Free airport access is documented |
Information checked on 28 September 2026. Airport SIM availability is documented in 2025 official visitor information; current seller identities, counter hours and complete airport totals remain unconfirmed.
The official visitor information prepared for a 2025 ITU event describes two SIM kiosks at the airport, including one beside a currency-exchange booth. It does not identify their operators or establish their position relative to immigration and customs.
Ask airport information for the current SIM sales point rather than relying on an old counter photo. If you are connecting without entering Guatemala, do not assume a seller will be accessible from your transit area.
Opening hours: Hours not reliably published. Treat a late-night airport purchase as a possibility, with another way to contact your accommodation already arranged.
Ask for the total cost of a working connection, not just the price of the plastic SIM. Your quote should identify:
The SIM or starter-line charge.
The data allowance and its expiry.
Any activation, registration or seller service fee.
Whether a local number, calls and SMS are included.
The payment currency and any card surcharge.
Ask: “¿Cuánto cuesta en total, con el chip, los datos y la activación?” It means: “How much is the total, including the SIM, data and activation?”
General-purpose data matters more than a large collection of app bonuses. Maps, ride bookings and browsing need an allowance that covers those activities; a social-media promotion is not equivalent to unlimited internet.
National operator prices provide a comparison point, but they are not airport quotes. There is no sufficiently reliable current GUA total to claim that every airport seller is more expensive, or to calculate a guaranteed saving from buying in town.
Bring your original passport when buying a Guatemalan SIM. Guatemala's SIM seller identification requirements explicitly allow a passport for foreign buyers and require the seller to verify the adult purchaser's identity and retain the required identification record.
Use your own details for registration. Keep the SIM packaging and receipt so you have the number and purchase information if you need help later.
Before handing over payment, establish whether the seller accepts your card or requires cash in quetzales. Airport-counter payment methods have not been reliably confirmed, so an operator's online card checkout should not be treated as proof that a particular kiosk accepts cards.
Ask for help installing and activating the line, then turn off Wi-Fi and load a webpage using mobile data. Check the remaining allowance and expiry while you are still at the counter. If your phone is locked to your home carrier, changing SIMs will not resolve that restriction.
Keep arrival paperwork separate from the purchase: our guide to Guatemala's airport customs rules covers the declarations and baggage questions to handle before continuing your journey.
Waiting until town makes sense when your transfer is arranged and you want time to compare local plans. It is especially useful if you need a Guatemalan number or expect to use substantial data during a longer stay.
Tigo has identifiable alternatives in both places:
Guatemala City: Oakland Mall, Diagonal 6, 13-01, Zona 10, third floor, unit L-306. Listed hours are 10:00–20:00 Sunday–Thursday and 10:00–21:00 Friday–Saturday.
Antigua area: Centro Comercial Paseo Antigua, unit 32, Finca Las Ánimas, Santa Inés del Monte Pulciano. Listed hours are 09:00–20:00 daily.
Store addresses and hours: Tigo's official directory, checked on 28 September 2026.
The Antigua branch is at a shopping centre, so locate it against your accommodation before making a special trip. Detouring into Guatemala City solely for a SIM may erase a small saving if you are already heading directly to Antigua.
As a national-price benchmark, Tigo's standard prepaid range includes 5 GB for seven days at Q35 and 15 GB for 30 days at Q120, before purchasing a new SIM. Tigo's separate SIM guidance lists the physical chip at Q10. These are operator reference prices checked on 28 September 2026, not confirmed airport bundles or a promise about a particular dealer's checkout total.
Compare those options with Claro and the wider registration details in our guide to buying a local SIM in Guatemala. Waiting gives you more time to compare the complete offers.
If your main needs are maps, booking messages and coordinating a pickup, you can prepare a Guatemala eSIM before departure and avoid making your first connection depend on a shop being open.
Roafly's Guatemala plans use Claro and provide data only, without a Guatemalan phone number or conventional calls and SMS. Hotspot uses the purchased allowance, and top-ups are supported. Your device must be unlocked and compatible with eSIM.
Install over a reliable internet connection and follow the supplied setup instructions. At your destination, select the travel eSIM for mobile data and apply its roaming settings as instructed; keep data roaming disabled on your home line unless you intend to use that carrier's roaming service.

Local prepaid can still be the better purchase if you need a local number, included voice calls or a suitable high-allowance plan. Roafly's practical advantage here is being able to arrange data before arrival. Compare the broader eSIM options for Guatemala if you are still deciding between providers.
Free Wi-Fi is documented at La Aurora. Use it to send your arrival message, open a booking or confirm where your driver is waiting. Verify the network name on airport signage or with airport staff.
Save your accommodation address, pickup instructions and an offline map before flying. Once you leave the airport's Wi-Fi coverage, messages and live location updates need another connection.
Your onward journey determines how much shopping flexibility you have:
Direct transfer to Antigua: Agree on the meeting point in advance. If mobile data is already prepared, you can leave without adding a SIM stop.
Night in Guatemala City: Airport Wi-Fi and a prearranged pickup can bridge the arrival, with a city-store visit during opening hours.
Late landing: Have data or an offline pickup plan ready before departure rather than making an open kiosk essential.
Local number needed immediately: Allow time for registration and a working-line test if a seller is open.
Our Guatemala transport guide covers the next decision: getting away from the terminal. If you are weighing mobile data against accommodation Wi-Fi, roaming or other methods for the rest of the trip, compare the main internet options in Guatemala.
Can I buy a physical SIM if my phone has no SIM tray?
No. You need an eSIM option supported by your device. Availability of physical SIM sales at the airport does not establish that the same seller can issue a local eSIM.
Will buying a SIM give me a Guatemalan number?
Guatemalan prepaid lines can provide one; ask what calls and SMS the package includes. Roafly's Guatemala eSIM supplies data without a local number.
Should I buy at the airport or wait?
Buy at GUA when an open seller can register you, explain the complete price and demonstrate a working line without disrupting your transfer. Wait for a city store when you want to compare local offers, or prepare an eSIM before flying when mobile data is your priority.
