⚠️ WARNING: Allowances are individual. You cannot pool your alcohol allowance with a friend to bring one expensive bottle that exceeds the individual value limit.
The "Big Ban" / The Trap: Medications 💊

The biggest trap for travelers is medication. Japan has zero tolerance for stimulants, even if they are legally prescribed in the US or Europe.
-
The Danger Zone: Medications containing Pseudoephedrine (common in cold meds like Sudafed or Vicks inhalers) and Amphetamines/Methamphetamines (like Adderall, Vyvanse) are STRICTLY PROHIBITED.
-
The Consequence: Bringing these into Japan, even with a doctor's note, can lead to immediate arrest and deportation.
-
The Rule: If you need to bring restricted prescription meds, you must apply for a "Yunyu Kakunin-sho" (Import Certificate) weeks before your trip.
Banned & Restricted Items List
Do not pack these items under any circumstances. Japan's bio-security measures are extremely strict regarding food and plants.
-
Illegal Drugs: Cannabis (CBD oil is also very risky and mostly banned), cocaine, etc.
-
Certain Medications: Adderall, Vyvanse, Sudafed (containing pseudoephedrine).
-
Meat & Animal Products: Beef jerky, sausages, ham (even vacuum-sealed). Japan’s quarantine beagles will find them.
-
Fresh Produce: Most fruits and vegetables are banned to protect local agriculture.
-
Obscene Materials: Uncensored pornography (magazines, DVDs).
-
Counterfeit Goods: Fake designer bags or watches.
Official Source: For the full and official list of prohibited items, please refer strictly to the Japan Customs Official Website.
Fines & Payment
-
Confiscation: Banned items (like meat or fruit) will be confiscated immediately. You will not get them back.
-
Fines: Penalties for bringing in illegal meat products can be up to 3 million yen (approx. $20,000 USD).
-
Arrest: Carrying banned stimulants (drugs) usually results in detention, not just a fine.
