The rules checked on 5 September 2026 also require attention to travel and, for certain itineraries, yellow fever vaccination. Someone flying directly from London and someone arriving after a holiday in Colombia can face different health-document requirements, even with the same nationality.
Do You Need a Visa for Costa Rica?
Costa Rica divides nationalities into four entry groups. The examples below concern ordinary passports and short tourist visits; they are not a complete nationality list.
| Entry group | Examples | Visa position | Initial tourist stay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Group 1 | United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Australia, Mexico | Visa exempt | Up to 180 days |
| Group 2 | Türkiye, Philippines, Guatemala, Malaysia, Taiwan | Visa exempt | Normally up to 30 days |
| Group 3 | India, Indonesia, mainland China | Consular visa unless a qualifying exemption applies | Normally up to 30 days |
| Group 4 | Pakistan, Bangladesh, Cuba, Jamaica | Restricted visa requiring additional approval, unless exempt | Normally up to 30 days |
Check your exact nationality in the official immigration entry directive, including its country-specific provisions. Russia, Colombia and Nicaragua have special stay rules, so the group number alone does not settle every case.
Visa-free entry does not guarantee the maximum number of days. Check the permission recorded at immigration before leaving the counter. Raise any discrepancy immediately, especially if your booked departure falls after the date granted.
Keep your passport type consistent throughout the check. Ordinary, diplomatic and emergency passports, as well as refugee travel documents, can receive different treatment.
Can Another Country’s Visa or Residence Permit Exempt You?
Holding a qualifying foreign visa or residence document can remove the need for a Costa Rican consular or restricted visa. This matters particularly if your passport is in Group 3 or Group 4.
The document’s category, validity and permitted entries matter. Living abroad or having visited the United States previously does not establish an exemption.
US and Canadian documents
Qualifying US or Canadian visas and residence documents must permit multiple entries and remain valid for at least calendar day when you enter Costa Rica. Your authorized stay cannot extend beyond the qualifying document’s validity.
US transit visas C1, C2 and C3 are excluded. Do not confuse them with the separately accepted crew-related categories in the directive. If the code on your document is unclear, send a copy to the handling Costa Rican consulate before booking.
Schengen visas and European residence permits
Certain multiple-entry Schengen C and D visas, and qualifying residence documents from specified European countries, can also support an exemption. Check the issuing country, document category and remaining validity against the consular visa-exemption guidance and the directive it references.
Schengen C and D visas must be multiple-entry documents already valid on arrival, with at least calendar day remaining; your stay cannot outlast the visa. Qualifying residence documents from the listed European countries follow separate conditions, including the usual 90-day validity requirement and exclusions for refugee or asylum status.
The UK eVisa exception
Do not rely on a UK eVisa to replace a Costa Rican tourist visa. The Costa Rican Embassy in London’s current application instructions say the UK eVisa is not accepted for this waiver; an expired BRP card does not resolve the problem.
That warning concerns people relying on UK immigration status. British citizens traveling on qualifying British passports have their own nationality-based exemption. Someone with another independently qualifying document should have that document assessed separately.
Passport Validity and Documents to Prepare
Costa Rica does not impose universal six-month passport rule. The embassy’s passport and entry-group guidance distinguishes the main visa-exempt groups:
-
Group 1: The passport must remain valid for the stay granted.
-
Group 2: The usual minimum validity is 90 calendar days on entry.
-
Groups 3 and 4: The usual minimum is 180 calendar days, subject to nationality-specific exceptions.
Consular application checklists can require additional validity at the application stage. Follow the instructions of the office handling your visa, and check the passport rules for every transit country too.
Prepare the following together:
-
Your original passport and any required Costa Rican visa.
-
The original qualifying foreign visa or residence document, if using an exemption.
-
Your return or ticket.
-
Evidence that you can fund your stay.
-
Your yellow fever certificate, if your itinerary requires it.
Costa Rica’s general financial threshold is US$100 per month or part of a month of the intended stay. Keep accessible evidence of funds; this immigration threshold is not a realistic holiday budget.
Save your first accommodation address and booking details as well. Keeping them ready makes it easier to explain your plans without searching through emails at the counter.
Download essential documents for offline access before departure. If you want mobile access to booking changes and transport after arrival, arrange a Costa Rica eSIM for a compatible, unlocked phone. Keep the offline copies available too.
Return and Tickets: Match Them to Your Stay
Visitors need evidence that they will leave Costa Rica within their authorized stay. The Costa Rica Tourism Board’s-travel guidance recognizes a prepaid outbound flight, a prepaid international bus ticket or proof of cruise passage.
Your ticket does not necessarily have to return you home. An journey to another country can serve the purpose, provided you meet that destination’s entry requirements.
Check that the document clearly identifies:
-
Your name.
-
The departure date.
-
The route out of Costa Rica.
-
The confirmed transport booking.
If you fly into Costa Rica but fly home from Panama, your flight from Panama does not show how you will leave Costa Rica. Keep evidence of the connecting cross-border journey.
Longer visits deserve an extra check: the tourism board’s page still contains a 90-day reference in its ticket guidance alongside the newer 180-day maximum. If your proposed departure is more than 90 days after arrival, ask the airline to confirm the document requirements for your passport and itinerary before ticketing. Immigration still decides how long you may stay.
Goods declarations are a separate step. Check Costa Rica’s customs rules for luggage, food, medicines and cash declarations.
Yellow Fever Requirements Depend on Your Route
Costa Rica requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate for arrivals from specified countries or areas with transmission risk. The relevant question is where you have traveled, not simply which passport you hold.
Brazil, Colombia and Peru are among the countries that require particular attention. Check the complete official yellow fever entry guidance before combining Costa Rica with another destination.
Where vaccination is required, it must have been administered at least 10 days before travel, and you must carry the International Certificate of Vaccination. The certificate’s validity is indefinite.
Airport or port transit without passing immigration can fall within an exemption. Leaving the airport to stay overnight changes the facts, so give the consulate or airline your full itinerary when checking.
Medical and age-related exceptions also exist. If may apply, confirm the acceptable supporting documentation with the relevant authority and discuss vaccination suitability with a clinician.
Some recent Costa Rican announcements concern citizens and residents traveling abroad. Do not treat an extension or postponement in those announcements as a blanket waiver for foreign tourists entering Costa Rica.
Applying for a Visa Before Departure
Start with the Costa Rican consulate responsible for your place of residence. Explain your nationality, passport type, residence status, intended dates and any foreign visa you believe could qualify you for an exemption.
Ask the office to confirm:
-
Whether you need a consular or restricted visa.
-
Which supporting documents and translations it requires.
-
Whether documents need apostilles or legalization.
-
The appointment procedure, current fee and expected processing time.
-
When an approved visa must be placed in your passport and used.
Depending on the application, supporting evidence can include financial records, criminal-record certificates and civil documents. Requirements for a visa application are more extensive than the documents routinely carried by a visa-exempt holidaymaker.
Avoid making irreversible bookings around an assumed processing date. Restricted visa cases involve an additional approval process, and submitting an application does not establish permission to travel.
Once approved, distinguish the deadline to use the visa from the number of days you may stay after entry. Check both before finalizing your itinerary.
Airports, Land Borders and Transit Connections
Arrival at San José’s Juan Santamaría Airport (SJO), Liberia’s Guanacaste Airport (LIR) or an authorized land crossing still requires you to meet the rules applicable to your passport and journey.
If entering overland from Nicaragua or Panama, keep your passport, qualifying documents and-travel evidence readily accessible. Plan enough time to complete both countries’ border procedures; a bus reservation does not complete immigration formalities.
Connecting through a Costa Rican airport
Do not assume that remaining in an airport automatically removes visa requirements. Costa Rica requires airport transit visas for specified nationalities, including all Group 4 nationalities and certain Group 3 nationalities such as India. Qualifying exemptions may apply.
Tell the airline whether you have separate tickets, need to collect baggage or must pass immigration. Those details can change whether your journey can remain airside.
Connecting through another country
Costa Rican visa exemption does not establish permission to transit through the United States, Canada or another country. Check each connection against your passport and any visa or travel authorization you hold.
Extending Your Stay or Changing Your Plans
The full 180-day Group 1 tourist stay is not extendable under the normal tourist rules. The directive provides a narrower extension option for people initially granted fewer than 90 days, up to a total of 90 days.
Group 2 stays can generally be extended to a total of 90 days, subject to the applicable procedure and approval. Do not assume that a shorter permission can simply be increased to 180 days.
Contact immigration before your current permission expires. Changing a flight or extending an accommodation booking does not extend your lawful stay.
Tourist admission also does not establish permission to take local employment. If your plans involve living in Costa Rica while working remotely, review Costa Rica’s digital nomad requirements before relying on tourist status.
Costa Rica Entry Requirements FAQ
Do US citizens need a visa for Costa Rica?
Ordinary US passport holders are visa exempt for tourist visits of up to 180 days. The immigration officer sets the actual permitted stay, and the other entry requirements still apply.
Do Turkish and Philippine passport holders get 180 days?
Ordinary Turkish and Philippine passports are in Group 2. The usual initial allowance is up to 30 days, with a possible extension to a total of 90 days under the applicable rules.
Can Indian passport holders enter with a US visa?
They may qualify if the US visa meets Costa Rica’s exemption conditions. Check its category, multiple-entry status and validity; an excluded US transit visa does not qualify.
Is the arrival stamp a visa on arrival?
Visa-exempt visitors receive permission to stay at immigration. That does not mean someone who needs an advance visa can arrive and apply for it at the border.
What should I check before leaving immigration?
Read the permitted stay recorded in your passport and compare it with your departure booking. If the dates do not match your understanding, ask the officer to clarify while you are still at the counter.
