Colombia allows many ordinary passport holders to visit without applying for a visa, while others need a tourist visa or must qualify for a conditional exemption. Your nationality matters, but certain residence permits and existing visas can also change the answer.

The rules checked on October 19, 2026 distinguish visa eligibility from arrival preparation: Check-Mig is a free, optional immigration preregistration service, and completing it does not replace a visa or determine how long you may stay.
Start with your ordinary passport, then consider any qualifying residence permit or visa you hold.
| Entry route | Representative passport examples | What to arrange |
|---|---|---|
| Visa-exempt short visit | United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Brazil and Türkiye | Travel documents and supporting evidence for your visit; immigration determines your permitted stay |
| Conditional visa exemption | India, mainland China and Vietnam | A qualifying US or Schengen residence permit, or qualifying visa meeting the validity requirement |
| Tourist visa before travel | Pakistan, Nigeria and Egypt, unless a separate exemption applies | Obtain the appropriate Colombian visitor visa before departure |
These are examples, not a complete nationality list. Use Colombia’s official visa requirements and exemption guidance to identify your route.
Visa-exempt tourists are generally admitted for up to 90 days. The permission issued at entry determines your actual deadline, so read it before planning a longer stay.
Colombia’s tourist entry system is based on exemption or advance visa approval. If your passport requires a visa and you do not qualify for an exception, arrange it before travelling rather than expecting to buy one on arrival.
Colombia has a conditional exemption for ordinary passport holders from:
Cambodia
India
Nicaragua
Myanmar
Mainland China
Thailand
Taiwan
Vietnam
The qualifying documents are either a valid residence permit issued by the United States or a Schengen member state, or a US or Schengen visa valid for at least 180 days when entering Colombia.
That 180-day condition concerns the qualifying visa’s remaining validity. It is not permission to spend 180 days in Colombia.
Carry the document supporting your exemption alongside your passport. A US or Schengen visa does not create the same exemption for every nationality.
Separate provisions may also cover permanent residents of Pacific Alliance countries and certain permanent residents of Andean Community countries. These depend on the applicable residence status and rules; an ordinary tourist visa for Mexico, for example, is different from Mexican permanent residence.
If you need a visa, the relevant category for leisure travel is normally Visitor Visa V — Tourism. Colombia accepts visa applications online and issues electronic visas, with additional documents or checks possible during assessment.
Prepare:
A passport valid for at least six months at the time of application.
A written explanation of your trip, including its purpose, locations and duration.
Entry and departure reservations.
Financial evidence, including the required bank statements.
Health insurance meeting the visa category’s coverage requirements.
Host documentation if someone in Colombia is formally sponsoring your visit.
The application’s financial and insurance requirements belong to the visa process; they should not be presented as identical requirements for every visa-exempt arrival.
Visa validity and permitted stay are different. The V Tourism visa may be issued for up to one year, while its published conditions limit stays to 90 days, extendable by another 90, with a maximum of 180 days within each 365-day period counted from issuance. Follow the conditions of the visa actually granted.
Complete the process before departure. Submitting an application is not the same as receiving approval.
No. Migración Colombia’s current Check-Mig service guidance describes it as optional and free. Its purpose is to preload travel information and make the immigration interview quicker.
You can complete it between 72 hours and one hour before your journey, for entry or departure.
Have the following information ready:
Passport and personal details.
Transport details, including flight information where applicable.
Your entry or departure checkpoint.
The purpose of your trip.
Contact and accommodation details.
After submitting the form, save the confirmation. If the email does not arrive, the official application lets you retrieve and download the registration.
Submitted information cannot be edited through the service; an error requires a new registration. Use the official route rather than paying a third-party website for a form the government provides free.
Check-Mig is neither a tourist visa nor an electronic travel authorization. Its confirmation does not change your visa eligibility or permitted stay.
Keep the documents for your trip together, with accessible digital copies and any originals needed to establish eligibility.
| Document or information | Practical purpose |
|---|---|
| Valid passport or another specifically accepted travel document | Establishes identity and your eligibility to travel |
| Colombian visa, if required | Shows advance permission for the relevant visit |
| Residence permit or foreign visa supporting an exemption | Establishes why you qualify for conditional visa-free entry |
| Return or onward ticket | Shows your planned departure |
| Accommodation address and booking or host details | Explains where you will stay |
| Evidence of sufficient funds | Supports your ability to cover the visit |
| Check-Mig confirmation, if completed | Makes the preregistered information available during immigration control |
Colombia’s general immigration guidance requires a valid, current travel document. The six-month passport requirement stated in the visa application guidance applies when applying for a visa; it should not be turned into a universal rule for every visa-exempt visitor.
Leave enough passport validity for your itinerary and the requirements of any transit or onward destination. Your airline may also check the documents needed for the complete journey.
Have a departure ticket consistent with the stay you intend to request. Keep your first accommodation address accessible, including host contact details if staying privately.
Financial evidence may be requested. The income threshold used in a tourist visa application is a separate matter from an immigration officer assessing whether a visa-exempt visitor can support a short holiday.
Download reservations before flying. Our guide to getting internet in Colombia covers the connection options available once you arrive.
Colombia’s current Ministry of Health guidance takes a non-restrictive vaccination approach to international entry, while setting out additional precautions and vaccination checks for travel within higher-risk areas.
The distinction matters if your holiday continues beyond Bogotá, Medellín or Cartagena into destinations with different health conditions.
The ministry’s yellow fever guidance and risk information states that travellers heading to high- and very-high-risk municipalities should be vaccinated at least 10 days beforehand. Vaccination evidence must be presented at health checkpoints when entering or leaving very-high-risk municipalities.
Plan this around your actual route. Discuss vaccination suitability with a travel-health professional, particularly if you have a medical condition or another reason vaccination may be unsuitable. Keep your vaccination record available when relevant, and consider the entry rules of your next country after Colombia.
Remaining airside does not give every passport holder the same transit exemption. Colombia requires an airport transit visa for certain nationalities, including Bangladesh, Nigeria and Pakistan, subject to applicable exemptions.
The airport transit permission covered by these rules allows up to 24 hours in the international transit area and does not authorize changing airports.
If your connection involves collecting luggage, passing immigration, changing airports or taking a domestic flight, assess your eligibility to enter Colombia. A short connection time alone does not establish a visa exemption.
Complete immigration formalities at an authorized checkpoint and obtain the appropriate entry record. Crossing a border physically is not a substitute for being admitted.
Keep that record and the travel document you used to enter. Your permitted stay still applies when you arrive overland rather than by air.
Visa-exempt visitors holding a valid entry permission may apply for a Permiso Temporal de Permanencia, commonly called a stay extension or prórroga.
For an eligible tourism permission, the extension can be up to another 90 days, without exceeding 180 days in the same calendar year, whether continuous or split across visits.
Migración Colombia’s current instructions say to apply five working days before the existing permission expires. The process requires supporting documents and, where applicable, payment. An application alone does not grant an extension.
Keep the two time calculations separate:
Visa-exempt tourist permission: the extension rules use a calendar-year ceiling.
V Tourism visa: the published visa conditions use a 365-day period counted from issuance.
Leaving and returning does not erase days already counted under the applicable rule. If your permission is close to expiring, address it through Migración Colombia rather than relying on a new border crossing.
Once your entry route is clear, prepare the practical details:
Match the documents to your passport. Include any visa or residence permit supporting an exemption.
Keep your departure plan and first accommodation details accessible.
Complete Check-Mig if you want to preregister, using the official service within its stated window.
Review the health requirements for your route, including onward travel after Colombia.
Save important documents offline and prepare your arrival connection.
If you prefer to arrange mobile data before departure, a Colombia eSIM provides prepaid data for a compatible, unlocked device. You can compare eSIM options for Colombia when choosing a plan.

No. Your initial permission determines your departure deadline. Eligible visa-exempt visitors can apply for an extension within the applicable annual limit; six months is not automatically granted on arrival.
The service provides a confirmation that you can save and retrieve. Keep it accessible if you complete the form. Check-Mig itself is optional under the current official guidance.
Health insurance is a stated requirement of the V Tourism visa application. That should not be described as a universal insurance-document requirement for all visa-exempt tourists. Appropriate travel cover remains a sensible part of planning the trip.
Colombian dual nationals must identify themselves as Colombian when entering and leaving the country. Follow the Colombian-national document rules rather than relying solely on the foreign-passport tourist route.
