You can buy a local SIM at Cape Town International Airport through Vodacom and MTN outlets. Buying on arrival is most useful if you need a South African number or help setting up a physical SIM; a preinstalled travel eSIM suits visitors who mainly need mobile data and want to leave without shopping.
Where to Buy a SIM at Cape Town Airport
Start with the outlet serving your arrival area. Vodacom identifies both international arrivals and a shop just outside domestic arrivals, while MTN has an official listing specifically for international arrivals.
| Option | Where to look | Published hours | Best reason to consider it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vodacom, international arrivals | International arrivals; exact position within the area is not specified | Opens when flights arrive; fixed hours not reliably published | Local prepaid service without walking to the domestic arrivals shop |
| Vodacom, domestic arrivals | About 10 metres to the right after exiting domestic arrivals | Hours not reliably published | Physical SIM purchase or assistance after a domestic connection |
| MTN, international arrivals | International arrivals outlet; exact counter position is not specified | Daily, 07:00–23:00 | Local prepaid SIMs and tourist data bundles |
Locations and published hours checked on 7 October 2026 against Vodacom Rentals and MTN store records. Current airport price not reliably published as a complete, itemised purchase total.
Vodacom
The domestic-arrivals shop gives you the clearest published walking directions: exit the arrivals area, turn right and continue about 10 metres. International passengers also have a Vodacom outlet in their arrival area, so there is no need to assume the domestic shop is the option.
Ask specifically for a prepaid tourist SIM if you want to pay upfront. Vodacom airport retail and Vodacom Rentals are not interchangeable products: the rental service has deposit and final-billing arrangements, which are different from buying a prepaid bundle.
If offered a rental, understand the deposit, billing and return or cancellation terms before accepting it. Prepaid keeps the purchase simpler if you want a fixed allowance paid for upfront.
MTN
MTN’s international-arrivals listing gives daily hours of 07:00–23:00. Its more general Cape Town International Airport listing starts at 06:00, so do not assume the international-arrivals counter opens at that earlier time. The listed airport contact number is +27 83 869 1414.
The international-arrivals outlet lists credit cards, debit cards and NFC payments. Bring a physical payment card as a backup to your mobile wallet.
Landing before closing time does not leave the whole remaining hour available for shopping: immigration and baggage collection come first. If your flight arrives late, prepare your connection before departure or have a way to reach your accommodation without relying on an open SIM counter.
What Do Airport SIM Packages Cost?
Vodacom and MTN publish tourist-bundle prices, which give you a useful reference before approaching the counter. These are operator bundle prices, not independently verified all-in checkout totals for every Cape Town Airport outlet.
| Published tourist bundle | General-use data | Other included allowance | Validity | Published bundle price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vodacom Travel | 3 GB | 30 any-network minutes, R50 airtime and 30 SMS | 30 days | R299 |
| Vodacom Travel | 5 GB | 50 any-network minutes, R100 airtime and 50 SMS | 30 days | R449 |
| Vodacom Travel | 10 GB | 100 any-network minutes, R150 airtime and 100 SMS | 30 days | R699 |
| MTN Traveller | 10 GB | No separate night allowance listed | 30 days | R499 |
| MTN Traveller | 20 GB | Additional 20 GB Night Express data | 30 days | R699 |
Vodacom Travel SIM and MTN Traveller terms checked on 7 October 2026. These published offers are intended for airport or participating retail purchase; branch stock, the SIM charge and any separate service fee still need to be included in your quote.
Compare the data you can use during the day. MTN’s additional Night Express allowance works from 00:00 to 04:59. Its 20 GB plus 20 GB offer therefore provides 20 GB for unrestricted use throughout the day, rather than 40 GB with identical conditions.
Vodacom’s bundles combine data with calls, airtime and SMS. Those extras can matter if you want to call accommodation providers or other local numbers, but they add less value when you mainly use maps and messaging apps.
Before paying, request total covering the starter SIM, selected bundle, taxes and any activation or shop service charges. Have the employee show the loaded allowance and expiry date on your phone. Keep the receipt until you have tested mobile data with Wi-Fi switched off.
Passport, RICA Registration and Activation
Local SIMs need RICA registration before use. Keep your original passport accessible rather than packing it deep in your checked luggage.
Vodacom’s SIM registration requirements specify a valid passport for foreign nationals, with proof of address depending on the registration type. Its RICA registration service is free.
MTN’s prepaid terms require a passport or other accepted identity document and proof of residence no older than three months. Its tourist offer also refers to flight details, so keep your boarding pass or itinerary available.
Prepare:
-
Your original, valid passport.
-
Recent proof of your residential address.
-
Your South African accommodation address and booking confirmation.
-
Your flight details and an unlocked phone.
Keep your hotel booking handy, but do not assume it replaces every form of address evidence requested by the retailer. Let the staff member identify what is accepted for your registration.
Finish the setup at the counter. Ask for help inserting the SIM, selecting it for mobile data and making a test connection. If local calls are part of your reason for buying, have the number and calling allowance explained before leaving.
Is Buying a SIM in Cape Town Cheaper?
Buying in the city lets you compare ordinary prepaid options when you are less rushed. It is not a guarantee that the same bundle will cost less.
MTN has a store at Shop 7103, V&A Waterfront, and another at The Felix, 58 Strand Street. These are practical alternatives if you can reach your accommodation with an existing connection or a prearranged transfer.
The fair comparison is the full cost of a starter SIM plus a bundle that matches your trip. National data-recharge prices exclude the work of obtaining and registering the line, and some promotions split their allowance between general data, specific apps or overnight use.
Waiting until the city makes sense when you already have arrival connectivity and want to explore longer-stay or higher-data options. Buying at the airport makes sense when a working local number and setup assistance are worth more to you than spending time comparing shops later.
Using Roafly Instead of Visiting a SIM Counter
Roafly’s South Africa eSIM uses Vodacom and provides mobile data without a local phone number, regular calls or SMS. It suits visitors who mainly need navigation, bookings, messaging and app-based calls.
You need an unlocked, eSIM-compatible device. Top-ups are supported, and hotspot use comes out of your purchased data allowance without a separate hotspot quota.
Install the eSIM while you have a stable internet connection and follow the setup instructions for selecting your data line. The South Africa plan’s validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a supported network in South Africa, allowing you to prepare it before your flight.

The practical advantage is removing dependence on counter hours, physical SIM stock and a SIM swap. A local prepaid SIM remains the more suitable choice if you specifically need a South African number and ordinary voice calls.
Keep data roaming disabled on your home SIM to avoid unintended data charges, and use the settings specified for your travel eSIM. Before any trip beyond Cape Town, download offline maps as well; mobile reception can vary along your route.
Free Wi-Fi at Cape Town Airport
Cape Town Airport’s complimentary Wi-Fi provides up to 1 GB or four hours, whichever limit you reach first.
Connect to # AIRPORTS FREE, open your browser and follow the registration steps. An email address is required. The paid service is separate from complimentary access.
Use the connection to retrieve your accommodation details, contact your pickup driver or finish downloading an eSIM. Save the address and meeting instructions before walking out of the terminal: airport Wi-Fi is a temporary arrival connection, not mobile service for the journey into Cape Town.
If you are arriving after the SIM shops close, arrange your transfer and download essential trip information before flying. That preparation is useful even when you expect airport Wi-Fi to be available.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy a SIM if I reach Cape Town on a domestic flight?
Yes. Vodacom identifies a shop about 10 metres to the right after exiting domestic arrivals. If Cape Town follows an international arrival elsewhere in South Africa, keep the same passport and registration documents ready.
Can I buy a local eSIM instead of a plastic SIM?
Ask the airport retailer whether it can issue a prepaid eSIM to a foreign visitor with your device and documents. Do not assume every tourist package is available in both formats. Choosing a local eSIM also does not remove the operator’s registration requirements.
Which option would we choose for a short visit?
If your phone supports eSIM and you mainly need mobile data, preparing Roafly before departure makes the arrival simpler. If a South African number or ordinary local calls matter, compare the Vodacom and MTN prepaid offers at the airport and buy after the full price and usable data allowance are clear.
