Belgian prepaid SIMs combine starter credit, data bonuses and optional bundles. Understanding how those parts fit together helps you buy the right allowance without paying twice for the same credit.

Orange Tempo is a practical choice if you want a Belgian number and a physical SIM you can register in a shop. Roafly makes short visits simpler when you mainly need mobile data: install your eSIM before departure, keep your usual SIM in your phone and avoid local SIM registration.
Before buying either, check whether your existing mobile plan already includes enough roaming data for Belgium. That may cover a Brussels weekend without another purchase.
The useful comparison is the amount you pay to start using the service, together with the data, credit and purchase conditions attached to it.
| SIM or eSIM | Starting payment | Data and validity | Calls or credit | Purchase condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Orange Tempo | €10 | 5 GB welcome bonus, 31 days | €10 credit; 3,000 minutes to Orange Belgium, VOO and hey! | Credit can be exchanged for extra data |
| Proximus Pay&Go+ | €5 online promotion | 3 GB, 31 days | €10 credit, 10 bonus minutes and 500 SMS | Web promotion ends 1 November 2026 |
| BASE prepaid | €15 shop starter | 4 GB, 30 days | €15 credit, equivalent to 60 call minutes; 1,000 SMS | Credit can be exchanged for extra data |
| Lycamobile Plan Star | €10 introductory online price | 10 GB, 30 days | 750 minutes and 750 SMS | Introductory price for the first two months; then €15 |
| DIGI prepaid | €5 | 15 GB, one month | Unlimited calls to DIGI numbers | Belgium only; online identity-document restrictions |
| Roafly | $5.50 / $10.00 | 3 GB / 10 GB, both 30 days | Data only | Unlocked, eSIM-compatible device; no ID verification |
Prices and conditions checked on 27 October 2026 using official operator and Roafly listings. Local prices are in euros and Roafly prices are in USD, before discount codes. Prices, promotions and terms may change; online offers should not be assumed to match airport or shop offers.
Credit and data are separate benefits. Spending prepaid credit on an extra internet bundle reduces the balance available for paid calls and texts. The original credit should not also be counted as an additional SIM fee.
The current Orange Tempo prepaid offer suits visitors who want a local number, a welcome data allowance and the option to decide later how to spend their credit.
Its Data Boost options convert existing credit into internet access:
€5 of credit buys 5 GB.
€10 of credit buys 10 GB.
€15 of credit buys 15 GB.
Each Data Boost lasts 31 days. Using the starter’s included €10 credit for a 10 GB boost adds that allowance to your data balance without requiring another €10 payment, provided you have not already spent the credit.
That makes the starter more useful than its 5 GB welcome bonus alone suggests. However, converting the full balance leaves no paid-call credit from that initial €10. Keep some credit if you need calls to numbers outside the included Orange Belgium, VOO and hey! allowance.
Orange’s credit lasts 12 months, while the welcome data and Data Boost have their own shorter validity. The current Tempo offer also differs from older Tempo Giga packages still described in some travel guides.
Proximus’s advertised €5 starter is a temporary online promotion, reduced from €10 and valid until 1 November 2026. It includes delivery and requires identification before use.
That is useful if you can complete the order and registration process. Visitors walking into a shop should compare the offer available there rather than expect the web price.
For later use, a €15 online top-up provides a 3 GB bonus. Converting €12 of that credit adds another 3 GB, leaving €3 for other paid usage. The additional data lasts 31 days after activation.
BASE’s €15 starter is a straightforward option when you want mobile data alongside calls and texts. Its €15 credit covers up to 60 standard call minutes, with 1,000 bonus SMS and unlimited calls to BASE numbers under the applicable conditions.
You can also exchange €15 of call credit for another 4 GB. Combined with the 4 GB top-up bonus, that gives you more data while using up the credit that would otherwise pay for calls.
Two details matter:
BASE’s prepaid offer is limited to 4G, even though its monthly subscriptions offer 5G.
Out-of-bundle data costs €0.50 per MB, so buy another allowance before continuing mobile-data use after your bundle runs out.
The data bonus lasts 30 days. Keeping the SIM active for future trips involves a separate top-up requirement.
Lycamobile Plan Star combines 10 GB with 750 minutes and 750 texts. Its 10 GB roaming allowance also makes it relevant if your Belgium visit continues into another EU country.
The advertised €10 price applies for the first two months; the standard price afterward is €15. Review the renewal setting when purchasing, particularly if you only want one 30-day bundle.
Lycamobile supports registration using a foreign passport and accepts international Visa and Mastercard payments. Physical SIM delivery requires an address in Belgium; an eSIM removes the delivery step but still requires registration.
New SIMs must be registered and activated in Belgium within 14 days of purchase. Plan the purchase around your arrival rather than buying far in advance.
DIGI’s 15 GB prepaid offer costs €5 for one month, but it does not include roaming. That makes it a Belgium-only choice, unsuitable for keeping the same service working on a day trip to France or the Netherlands.
Online identification uses itsme or a supported identity-document scan and selfie. Accepted passports include those from EU/EEA countries, Morocco, Moldova, Türkiye and Ukraine. British, US and Canadian passports are not on the published online acceptance list.
DIGI is therefore a conditional budget option: your documents and itinerary both need to fit. Calls to DIGI numbers are included; other standard calls and texts use additional credit.
An operator shop is the most practical route when you have a foreign passport and want help with registration. Ask for a prepaid SIM with a new number, rather than a monthly subscription or a transfer of your existing number.
Orange also supports identification through partners including Carrefour Hypermarket and MediaMarkt. Buying a SIM from a retailer does not always mean that the retailer can complete activation, so settle that before leaving.
Belgium’s prepaid SIM identification rules accept an original, valid international passport for identification at a point of sale. A photocopy or an image saved on your phone does not replace the original document.
Use this short buying checklist:
Bring your passport and an unlocked phone.
Ask for the complete initial payment, including any separate service charge.
Confirm the data allowance and its expiry date.
Decide how much credit to keep for calls and how much to convert into data.
Complete identification and test mobile data before leaving, if activation has finished.
WHSmith in Brussels Airport’s arrivals hall is a SIM retail point. It can be convenient when you want to arrange a physical SIM before travelling into the city.
Compare the package offered at the counter with your actual needs. An airport bundle, an operator’s online promotion and a standard shop starter can have different inclusions. The national prices above are not airport quotations.
Online identification is operator-specific. Orange’s computer-based route requires a Belgian eID, card reader and PIN, so visitors with a foreign passport are better served by its in-person registration route.
BASE supports identification through its app using a passport photograph and selfie. Lycamobile also provides a foreign-passport registration route.
Mobile Vikings is less convenient for most short-stay visitors because its prepaid identification requires a Belgian payment method for the first payment. A low advertised tariff offers little benefit if you cannot complete activation.
Roafly fits trips where mobile data matters more than a Belgian phone number: navigating Brussels, checking trains to Ghent, opening accommodation details in Bruges and using messaging apps throughout the day.
Its Belgium plans support Proximus, Orange and BASE, with 4G/5G access where available. You can install the eSIM before departure, and validity starts when it connects to a supported network.
The practical benefits are:
No ID verification: no local prepaid registration process.
No physical SIM replacement: keep your usual SIM installed on a compatible device.
Hotspot sharing: use any of your purchased allowance for tethering, without a separate hotspot quota.
Top-ups: add data if your trip or usage grows.
Compare the available Belgium eSIM plans and select an allowance that matches your stay. The smaller benchmark in the table suits lighter use; the larger option gives you more room for social media, browsing and sharing a connection.

Roafly’s country plans are data-only. A local prepaid SIM is more useful when you specifically need a Belgian number, conventional calls or SMS, or when your phone does not support eSIM.
If you have decided on a travel eSIM and want a wider provider comparison, the best eSIM for Belgium guide covers that decision separately.
For a Brussels–Bruges trip, Belgian coverage is enough. Adding Paris, Amsterdam or another stop changes the package requirement.
The options in this guide differ:
Orange Tempo: includes use in the EU under its applicable roaming terms.
Proximus Pay&Go+: works within its defined EU roaming zone.
BASE prepaid: its included benefits apply in Belgium and the relevant European roaming zone.
Lycamobile Plan Star: includes 10 GB of EU roaming data.
DIGI prepaid: has no roaming.
Roafly Belgium: covers Belgium; choose coverage matching your wider route if you are travelling elsewhere.
Keep domestic allowance and roaming allowance separate when comparing larger bundles. A large Belgian data allowance does not necessarily provide the same amount abroad.
Also distinguish roaming from international calling. Using your SIM while visiting France is a different service from calling a French number while you are still in Belgium.
Yes. BASE, Lycamobile and DIGI offer prepaid eSIM options. They still follow their local registration requirements, and the available online identification route matters as much as phone compatibility.
Roafly offers a different product: a travel eSIM for mobile data without a Belgian phone number.
Not necessarily. Bundle validity, credit validity and the lifetime of the phone number are separate.
Proximus Pay&Go generally has a 12-month card-validity period, with extensions depending on top-up value. BASE requires a top-up at least once every 365 days to keep the SIM active. DIGI’s prepaid card remains valid for nine months from activation or the last top-up, while its credit lasts three months.
Those longer periods do not extend an expired monthly data allowance.
Yes. You can keep your existing WhatsApp account and registered number while using another SIM or eSIM for mobile data.
Keep access to your original number if you may need to receive a verification code later. Changing the phone’s data connection does not require using WhatsApp’s Change Number feature.
Orange Tempo is a sensible starting point for visitors who want a Belgian number and in-person registration. Lycamobile becomes attractive when calls, texts and onward EU use are central to the trip.
Roafly is the simpler fit for a short visit focused on mobile data, with advance installation, no ID verification and access to three Belgian networks. Choose a local SIM when its number or calling allowance provides something you will actually use.
Roafly publishes this guide and provides the travel eSIM service discussed above.
