Paraguay Asunción Airport (ASU) SIM Card Options

SIM sales at Asunción Airport have been reported, but current counter locations, opening hours and complete purchase prices are not reliably confirmed. Buying on arrival makes sense if you find an open seller who can register and activate your line; otherwise, prepare an eSIM or arrange your transfer before leaving connectivity until a city-store visit.

Can You Buy a SIM Card at Asunción Airport?

Checked 12 October 2026. Airport sales are reported in The Asunción Times’ July 2025 guide; they are not a current stock check. Claro branch details and Roafly pricing were checked separately.

The local report names Claro, Tigo and Personal SIM cards among the services available after arrivals. It does not identify an exact counter, confirm separate official shops for each brand, or provide a current price list.

Once you reach the public arrivals area, ask airport information where a SIM can be bought and activated that day. Hours not reliably published: the airport operating overnight is not evidence that a SIM seller will be open when your flight lands.

If the seller cannot complete activation, buying a starter card alone will not solve your arrival needs. Keep your accommodation address and transfer details available offline, and decide whether to continue to a city store.

Ask for the Complete SIM Price

The useful price is the amount needed to leave with a working line and enough data for your stay. Ask the seller to separate:

• The SIM card or starter-pack charge.

• The recharge or data-package amount.

• Any activation or assistance fee.

• The total payable, including any additional charges.

Then establish the general-purpose data allowance, expiry, and any calls or SMS included. App-specific benefits should not be counted as data you can use for maps, browsing or other services.

One national reference helps explain the distinction. Claro’s prepaid offer, checked on 12 October 2026, gives 2 GB for 30 days with a Gs. 20,000 recharge, alongside promotional WhatsApp and Claro-to-Claro calling benefits; the recharge balance also remains available to spend. That is a recharge offer, not a verified airport SIM-and-activation total.

Without a current airport quote, there is no sound basis for claiming that the terminal is a particular percentage more expensive than the city. Compare the complete offer you receive, including its validity and the time needed to get it working.

Payment acceptance at an airport SIM seller is also unconfirmed. Ask whether your card is accepted before starting the purchase, and keep some guaraníes available if you intend to buy locally.

Passport Registration and Activation

Bring your original passport and a carrier-unlocked phone. Before paying, tell the seller that you are visiting Paraguay and ask whether the line can be registered using your document.

The activation route matters. Tigo supports online activation of its self-activating SIMs with passports or foreign identity documents from a specified list of countries. Its process includes photographing the document, facial verification and entering an address. Consult the foreign-document activation instructions to see whether your country is supported.

This gives eligible visitors a route beyond a fully staffed activation counter, provided they can obtain the correct SIM and complete the process. It does not establish that a particular ASU shop currently stocks that SIM. If your document is outside the supported online list, ask the operator about assisted registration before purchasing.

Before leaving any seller, switch off Wi-Fi and load a webpage using the new line. Keep the receipt, SIM packaging and local number, and make sure you know how to view the remaining allowance.

Buying a SIM in Asunción Instead

City branches give you a known address and published opening hours. Two verified Claro alternatives are:

Claro branch hours checked 12 October 2026. Public-holiday schedules may differ.

Shopping del Sol offers longer evening and Sunday hours, while Palma is an option for a stay in central Asunción. Use the official branch directory for current details before making a special trip.

Ask for a prepaid line and explain your passport situation before choosing a package. Visiting an official branch is particularly useful when you need help with registration, want a Paraguayan number, or expect to recharge during a longer stay.

Preparing a Roafly eSIM Before Arrival

Roafly’s Paraguay eSIM uses Claro, with 4G where available. It is a data-only service: there is no Paraguayan phone number, regular calling allowance or SMS bundle.

The practical benefit at ASU is that you can purchase and install the eSIM before departure, removing the need to find a stocked SIM counter on arrival. Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked.

The Paraguay plans support hotspot sharing within the purchased allowance and offer top-ups. ID verification is not required. Plan validity begins when the eSIM first connects to a supported network in Paraguay.

Install over a stable internet connection before travelling, then follow the supplied setup instructions for selecting the eSIM as your mobile-data line and enabling its required data-roaming setting. Keep data roaming disabled on your home line unless you intend to use that carrier’s roaming service.

Local SIMs remain worth considering if you need a Paraguayan number or find a better complete offer for a longer stay. Roafly is most useful when your priority is mobile data without arranging a shop visit. You can compare Paraguay eSIM plans before settling on an allowance or provider.

Free Wi-Fi and Leaving the Terminal

Silvio Pettirossi Airport has free Wi-Fi. Current official information does not specify a network name, session limit or guaranteed speed, so ask airport staff for the correct network.

Use the connection to retrieve your booking, message your accommodation or organise your onward journey. Download anything essential while connected; terminal Wi-Fi is not a substitute for mobile data once you leave.

If your phone cannot use eSIM and your arrival is late, arranging the transfer in advance lets you reach your accommodation without depending on finding a SIM seller. With that first journey covered, you can visit a city branch during its published hours and choose a local plan without rushing.
