How to avoid roaming charges from my home carrier?

When you travel with a Roafly eSIM, you want to use our affordable data while keeping your primary (home) phone number active for incoming texts or calls.

Here is the exact setup to guarantee your home carrier doesn't charge you unexpected roaming fees:

1. Turn OFF Data Roaming for your Primary Line Before you leave your home country, you must explicitly tell your phone not to use your home carrier for internet.

  • On iPhone/iPad: Go to Settings > Cellular. Tap your Primary/Home SIM and toggle Data Roaming OFF.

  • On Android: Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks (or SIM Manager). Select your Primary SIM and turn Data Roaming OFF.

2. Set Roafly as your "Cellular Data" Line When you arrive at your destination, ensure your phone knows to use the Roafly eSIM for everything internet-related.

  • On iPhone/iPad: Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data. Select your Roafly eSIM. (Make sure "Allow Cellular Data Switching" is OFF so your phone doesn't sneakily switch back to your home line).

  • On Android: Go to Settings > Connections > SIM Manager (or Mobile Networks). Under the "Preferred SIMs" section, set Mobile Data to your Roafly eSIM.

3. Turn ON Data Roaming for your Roafly eSIM Unlike your home line, your Roafly eSIM needs roaming turned on to connect to the local networks abroad.

  • Go into your phone's settings, tap on your Roafly eSIM, and ensure Data Roaming is ON.

What about Calls and SMS? If you keep your Primary line turned "On" (to receive bank SMS or emergency calls), remember that answering a phone call or sending a text message using that line may still incur charges from your home carrier. However, receiving a standard SMS (like an OTP) is usually free worldwide.
